Hmm ... I don't know if I agree with the "wings needed" for road racing. I think you'd need to be well over what an S12 can do to notice. And is downforce worth the added weight and drag of having something obtuse in the air stream? A maladjusted wing will act like a parachute and unload the rear tires. Lucky you if you get a big gust of wind while downshifting on an offramp.
Now, on a notchback, sure. They by design need something to disrupt the dead air on the trunk. But you'd need the pedestal up pretty freaking high.
If you look at an S12 hatch from the side, it would be pretty hard to get a wing anywhere near the airstream.
And stealing something from a roadrace car doesn't mean it will work on a street car. *lol*
Investing $1 million into an aero program with a team of researchers and aeronautical engineers, + wind tunnel experiments allow them to package ride height, air induction and aerodynamics together.
Ever see what happens to any race car during qualifying when their aero is off? They have to be sensitive to every change in the air or else they end up destabilizing themselves.
If you want to put one on for cosmetic reasons, go right ahead. But why not just machine a piece of aluminum like the one the guy with the 300 has, bolt it to a piece of angle iron top and bottom. Then bolt the angle iron to the lid on one side, and wing on the other?
