Met a dude the other day who told me he used to own an S12 which ran the CA20 motor,

cept it was a twincam turbo, (apparently using the same head as the FJ + T3 turbo). These were apparently NZ made versions of which only about 35 were produced.

Not sure if I believe him or not, saying that, I probably couldn't throw him very far!

am persuing photographic/material evidence he says he can provide! will keep everyone informed!!

what would be the difference between running a regular FJ20ET w/ T3 turbo as opposed to a CA20 with FJ head w/ T3 turbo.. wouldn't it basically be the same thing?,.. the only thing that i could see that would be different is that the CA20 would be lighter but also have weaker internals, right??

well actually fj20det never was a offical designation for the fj the D for dohc was not around when the fj came out so it was just fj20et even though it was dohc so nissan just kept it the way it was first named

hmm, wierd! the FJ head is way different to the CA...
CA is a mile smaller for a start...
S'pose you could put a CA18DET head on a CA20 shortblock, if you want a long stroke fragile nasty thing...

the fj head couldnt be used anyways since the fj head uses chain not belt drive so there would be no way to adapt a chain sprocket to the crank

the way I read the first post it sounds like dude is saying that it was a factory thing. As in "what are we gonna do with these prototype motors bill?" "Send em to New Zealand ted." If that is the case a timing belt/chain would not be a big problem.

Yea, you've got a head that flows great, but a bottom end that cannot take the abuse that a decent T3 at full swing could produce. Interesting, though, if he comes up with anything.

Perhaps less boost more rpm? I'm assumeing that the ca20 rotating assembly(hehe I typed ass twice) would be considerably lighter. Still....doesn't make much sense unless the company thought they could save big bucks.

Possibly Nissans very own Fiero? (in reference that the Fiero was made out of existing parts for other cars) For those that don't already know.

Auto manufactuers have been known to do crazier things...just look at concept cars. What ever happens to all of those anyways? There some big storage warehouse they are all sitting in?

Yeah, there are some crazy combo's around

I've seen : Pulsar X1R (1500cc, sohc or something similar), with all the 4wd running gear of a GTiR, and an automatic gearbox

also a mazda hatch with 1300cc sohc, auto gearbox + Mazda GTX 4wd running gear/

surplus parts bin concoctions? i think so.... twak.gif

Most concepts are stored for awhile, and then promptly crushed. Its a shame all the work and innovation that goes into some of them (including huge $$) and then they get smashed, but some occasionally slip away into a warehouse somewhere. Some manufacturers keep a collection of the significant prototypes/concepts, and display them later in a museum or sell them off. Ford did this awhile back, they sold like 30 or more concept cars through auction that they had saved over the decades.
