okay kids, the ca20e FAQ section is lacking severely heh.

Lets make a list of what the ca20e Frequently Asked Questions are.  If you see a question here you know the answer to, make a new thread and let us know, or point us in the direction of an old thread with the right info.  We'll review it, and if it's good enough, we'll throw it into the FAQ.  I'll add questions to the list below as the questions come in, and cross them off as we get more answers.  I'll start things off with an easy one.

"What is the difference between Blacktop and Silvertop?"

sam31183Jun 20, 2006, 12:01 pm · #2

blacktop is mk1 ca20e from 84-mid 86
silvertop is mk2 ca20e from mid 86 to 88 here in the states...the s12 was sent to places in the uk beyond our 88 production year.

I found this while scavenging the internet.
Euro Camshaft (4 CYL)
The Euro turbo cam (.413/256deg), while designed for the CA18ET engine, will also work in the (non-turbo) CA20E engine. Requires new OE rocker arms (13257-D0103).
13001-21E83    Euro Camshaft
13257-D0103   OE Rocker Arm (8)

What is the HP capacity of the CA20e bottom end?  And how have these weaknesses been addressed most commonly?

What issues are the most difficult issues to overcome in swapping a CA18et camshaft into a CA20e?

As I have time, I could do a write-up on the diagnostic procedures and general repair for the CA20, as I have some experience and college automotive training.  It appears there are more general repair questions in the CA20 forum, as most S12s had them, and people that have the standard engine are slightly less likely to be gearheads as compared to the turbo owners, mostly because they are more common.  Some of the simple things like the cone filter adapter that was mentioned no one really makes but they have been built in the past easily could be re-produced, I know I could make them being a TIG welder, but even a link to a drawing with specs (I have CAD too) would help someone to build their own.

Some stuff to think about, anyhow, but it would have to be stickied so newbies could find it easily before posting their problem, which takes moderator action.  It seems like most 'I have a Problem X' posts never really get answered because they are so specific, and generally the ones that do get answered are just a diagnostic procedure that the person with the problem usually has to figure out themselves either way.  Give me some input or thoughts maybe, and common problems/solutions you have discovered.

Just to let everyone know, the CA20E filter adapter is the same as the Z31 one from autozone, basically, its got 4 drilled holes, and 4 indents where you can drill 4 more holes, the holes that you have to drill through match up EXACTLY with the screw holes on the CA20E's MAF

Which starter do I need for which year? 8-tooth or 9-tooth?

-What's the recommended viscosity engine oil?  Not brand or dino vs synth, we each have our opinion on that and alot are only available in certain regions
-What octane is the engine designed for? I ask cause my moto is designed for 95 and good luck finding it in the states!  I carry octane booster for it!
-Routine maintainance part numbers? Like: belts, hoses, plug, O2, etc
-New owner list, if you are a new owner replace these _ items and look at these _ items!

My buddy is considering buying an 87 with a ca20 and the guy he's buying it from says it only needs the ignition coil.  My question is what type of coil comes on the mk2?  He said its different from the mk1 coil setup and since i dont have lots of practice with these Im not sure exactly what he means.  Is it similar to to the mk1 or is it completely different?

Is this the correct part for a mk2?  ----> http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=941342&imageurl=http%3A//info.rockauto.com/Airtex/5C1234.jpg

Also same as Miata one. Can be had on ebay for like 6 bux.
JayDec 2, 2011, 12:36 pm · #14

No. That's a turbo/SE coil.
The CA20E Coils are the same across all the years.
