I just found out that a company named Autopower Industries makes a few different styles of roll cages that are and exact fit for an s12.
Here's the link http://www.autopowerindustries.com/applicationlist.asp
Roll Cages
Wow I can't believe they actually make'em for our cars.
some one posted that link up a long time ago. some one said they saw one installed and their were big gaps between the cage and the car. like it was a pretty universal cage. but I have never actually seen one. I would like to see how nice they are.

I have one of their bars. Its comforting to have a bar in the car. But it could be better. Yes. there is a gap between the bar and the roof, even with the headliner installed. They sell it where you request what additional bars; harness bar, diagonal bar, etc. I think you have to decide what you really want. If you want a full cage in the future, and are planning on using this bar as as a foundation, in my opinion it leaves alot to be desired. But as far as it's effectiveness fortunatly I've never had to test mine. But an un-perfect bar is better than no bar at all. I added door bars to mine. I love my bar. Its not my perfect bar but its good. It makes me feel cared about(by me). Some people have commented on it. thinking I'm looney to have it. But they're no match for seeing crashed cars. I want a full cage. I've seen to many cases where the firewall bends back and the roof teepees. I'm digressing, there's roll-bar discussions elsewhere on this site.

Probably be better off getting a custom cage welded in for not much more since theres a gap. I hope to shit no one is driving with a cage in their daily
That's exactly why I don't drive around with my cage installed. Pointless..

The roll bar would be fine with for a daily driver. It would be kinda hard to wack your head on that.

Are you kidding me? Your stock seatbelts will NOT hold you tightly against your seat in an accident. A side/rear/roll impact could kill you because your head can most definitely hit that upper bar or even the A pillar bar since you will not be wearing a helmet driving to the supermarket. For analogy sake, imagine someone swinging a metal baseball bat full force to your face. A lot of people also think padding will help if you don't have a helmet on, and again imagine a baseball bat with some foam around it going full force into your face. It's still not very pretty. The only cars that should have cages are full track cars with proper race harnesses. This should be common sense in the auto world, a full cage doesn't belong in a street car.
I'm not sure if that roll bar is, but all of the roll bars in cars I've seen have been behind the front seats. Sure I wouldn't want to sit in the back, but who would want to sit in the back of an s12 anyways.
^Haha, I thought you were OK'ing the cage. I missed the rollbar part since you quoted silverarrow. My bad, a rollbar is definitely OK since there are no bars in front or to your sides.
Searched for a couple pictures.

I guess they are a little too close to your head for comfort. A better designed one could be ok though.

lol yeah, rollbars are mostly OK but that on looks a bit iffy since it's practically right above your head. The only way to be safe in that is to have your seat way up in front of the bar

yea, i was gonna say....theres no head room at all in that thing! LOL
Yes, they do and they have to make them up as you order them. They do not have them in stock like they do for the S13 stuff. As for the past, they made them for those S12s that were in competitions. I have one in my car and yes they are legal for autox or drift, or rally. They have the Street, Sport, and the more gangster full cages available. The one I have is the Street-Sport. The Street does not have the bar for the harnesses. The Sport has the bar for the harness along with one or two other bars. I just talked to them and told them what I wanted and went from there. If you look at their website under the S13 setups, that will give you an idea of what it looks like. You can get them so they are either weld in or bolt in. Mine is a bolt in and it works like a champ. It was a pain in the ass to make fit it into my car while having full interior and making it clean as shit, but for those of you who arent so worried, just tear out your interior and you should be good.
I just read what you guys talked about space between the car and the bar. There is not that much. In some places you can barely get a finger inbetween and others, a finder or so is the most you can do. It's not a tight fit, but for a bolt in half cage like I have, it's the closest you're gonna get. It is good. I can feel the car's rigidity when I take corners and I have yet to do my strut towers. I would suggest Autopower if someone doesnt want to do the ordeal of a custom. For me, a custom would have cost as much as the Autopower did.

I have a harness. In town I put the waist & left belt on, when I go above 25 I put the other belt on. I think it's wise to advise people against the draw backs of a full cage. I think your right, you could smack your head off the bar in a side impact without a harness. One would be wise to desighn a cage to avoid this. But the analogy I'm not so fond of. A baseball bat with padding has more mass than a tack-welded together box tube with a plastic cover, of course your swing will have more power. In a impact it's not your swing. Its the speed of impact and the mass of what just t-boned you, or the mass of your side-ways flying car. So if you think a tree or truck coming in your car sideways with a sheet metal tube at the front is easy on your head: More power to you! Your head dosn't have that much mass anyway it's not like your going to head-but your roof edge and door frame outta the way and be ok! The padding is good. it's density increases with the force applied. If you push on it you'll feel that it gets harder. It's far superior than any factory padd put in any factory car, Second only to air-bags. But an air-bag won't keep your car from folding up of from tearing apart. That steel bar behind that pad is what keeping your car intact and from crushing. If you could keep your body from impacting that your good. At least till you reach so much force that the impact of your internal organs crush in the inside of your body, or your neck snaps, or your heart moves so fast it tears the arteries away.
