I want to be completely original and drop a CA18DET into my S14
I know it wont be really easy, but i cant imagine it being really hard.
What do you think about it?
Also could I use the KA motor mounts in my car to drop it in?
If not how much do custom mounts cost?
BTW
If this seems cool to you and you have an S14, dont steal my idea cool.gif
Ca S14
LOL You'd be made fun of by the entire 240 community.
Dont take it harshly but he is right. Yes its original its still a downgrade if your wanting to be JDM.
youd be swapping in an engine thats like 10 years older than your car. that doesnt sound right.
why are you on club s12 if you have a s14? it will work and the swap would be easy. might be hard to find wiring info. it will drop on your ka mounts. I think the drive shaft length will still be correct also. why don't you just go ka-t instead. then you can be cool like me. head over to kat.org and think about that swap a little.
wonder what the ca18det weighs. might be lighter and offer a handling advantage.
Damn not very nice here
I joined this because the s12's had CA's and i figured id get some good info here (apparently not, just a bunch of bullshit from uptight D bags)
A downgrade??
Tell me how swapping in a turbo motor with 170 hp is worse then a NA 150 hp KA???
A little turbo upgrade, and a fmic could make my car pretty quick, faster then a na ka
Im not an SR guy, never have been never will be
Im not a KA bashing guy, but ive seen way to many first hand encounters around here that have thrown rods and bearings.
I dont think i would be laughed at either, you would be surprised that there are a few 240 people out there that arent "SR's!!! Race Wars!!! YA!!"
I say FJ20 smile.gif
*high five* for not going wiht the gay, over hyped as SR!!
btw, the s12 cam w/the single cam CA18ET, not CA18DET. smile.gif probably find more info on nico on this type of swap. not trying to vear (spl?) you away, but that's where id go
Ya, i know the s12 never had the DET
but if i do the swap the sticky on here about pulsar parts that cross over will def help me out!
Sorry for coming off as temperamental
its been a long day for me, i had some steam to blow off
Id love the FJ20
If i had money!
haha and parts for those are probably insanely hard to come by
Black95s14 @ Oct 18 2007, 10:32 PM
Ya, i know the s12 never had the DET
It did have the CA18DET in it, but not in this country dry.gif(86-87). Then of course the S13 came out with a different version of the CA18DET in '88.... Once again not in this country.....
But the CA18DET was what came after the FJ20-(83-85).
The reason why I don't like this idea is because you're doing it solely to be original, according to all the reasons you've listed. Doing shit to be original is stupid imo, you either do it for some grand potential purpose or you do it because it's better than a,b,c. Simply saying "don't steal my idea" makes you sound like a trendy thirteen year old to me. I don't mean to sound like a total dick, I probably do. Sorry. But I've seen way too many stupid threads solely because some kid out there wants their shit to be "original" so they can get a bigger e-penis.
can you honestly tell me having a NA auto KA
is better then a 5 speed CA18DET??
You arent original for having an s12, everyone on here has one
That is just a stupid card to play
I want a turbo motor, and im weary of turboing the KA, and the following of SR fan boys is not something I want to get caught up in
So i see you as the only one giving me a hard time for wanting to do something that I personally think is neat, and i would have more fun with then my KA
I advise you to do some research on the CA18DET before you put one on your S14.
The CA18DET is an INFERIOR motor, the S13 had it and they later made the change to the SR20DET, and it was a lot faster.
The CA18DET is a good idea for an S12, as the Motor is powerful for the car's weight, and the S12 doesnt have any value, so people who can only afford an S12, its acceptable to only use a CA18DET in it.
The S14 is the heaviest of the S series cars, it needs torque, with the S12 being pretty light, the lack of torque in the CA18 is not as noticable.
It will be noticeable in the S14, and it will hardly move. you'll have to rev it a LOT harder to get it up hills, which will further hurt your reliability.
Also if you put in a CA18DET, you're putting a very old motor into it.
the reliability will go BACKWARDS, it will neither be as fast, or as reliable as an SR or KAT, these things pop on a regular basis, the best point is, as i mentioned, the price, so for those of us who have a cheap car, doing to regular swapping of blocks isn't such a big issue.
It's not going to be original, its just not going to work very well.
If you dont like the KAT or SR engines, in my opinion, there are many RB's you could use, the 20, or the 25 would be much better suited to a car like the S14.
If you really wanted to be original, you could try a rotary or RB30DET, LS1, 1UFZE conversion, which will be different AND worth while.
With the CA you run a strong risk of going through a lot of effort (will need custom tailshaft, CA's wont fit a S14 gearbox), wiring, as well as the regular hassles of doing a swap, for something is going to perform not as well as the original motor could do.
All this effort, for what, a blow off valve noise and a different looking timing belt cover? seriously, it is not worth it.
To put it in context, I could cut my dick in half longitudinally, because most men have a whole, working penis.
This however, is perhaps not a good option, and is a very painful way of being different, and would make sex impossible, thus removing the point of my willy.
The 1.8 L CA18DET was the last version of the CA engine to be released. It produces 173 hp and 166 ft·lb
KA24DE Max power: 157 hp
Max torque: 160 ft·lb (not to mention the power loss that occurs with my auto tranny)
S13 Curb weight 1224 kg (2699 lb)
S14 Curb weight 1253 kg (2762 lb)
Not a big enough difference to notice the weight
And if i removed some stuff from my s14, i could drop the ~70 lbs to get to a s13 weight
I really see no complication here
The only thing that intrigued me was the custom tailshaft...What exactly is that?
Black95s14 @ Oct 18 2007, 09:03 PM
You arent original for having an s12, everyone on here has one
That is just a stupid card to play
lol I never once said I was original for owning an s12, I know for a fact that I and everyone else on this forum has an s12. It is certainly a fact that this place is an s12 forum as you can see very clearly in the url. According to your last post, you don't know what a custom tail shaft is. Without having incredibly basic mechanical knowledge, how could you of all people "prefer" the CA over an SR, a KA or not be an "SR guy" for the matter. Are you just googling numbers? Googling HP, TQ, curb weight? You're gonna need more than just numbers to give a damn good reason for putting a CA into your s14. No one in the 240sx community will like the idea, in fact, post this idea up in Zilvia.net if you haven't already. That's the proper s and z chassis forum on the web, that will give you a proper answer/flaming.3
edit: we know full well the numbers that you've brought up in here, it's common knowledge to us s12 guys as we have a lot of information to keep up with to compete with other s chassis
Yeah, you're looking at the peak torque.
Problem being that in a CA18DET, that torque shows up at 6,000RPM, wheras in the KA, it starts earlier and hangs around for a while.
The CA powered S13 does a 0-100K/h in over 7.8 seconds, which is actually quite boring, and you can expect your S14 to take about 8 seconds.
By contrast a pretty basic setup SR will do that in less than 6 seconds. enough to be fun.
theres no benefit to doing the CA swap, other than having people look in your engine bay and go "wtf is that", which is a thrill that last for about 3 seconds, the time it takes for them to ask what kind of power it makes, which is close to nothing.
To pull off something original you need to have 1 - a good idea 2 - an idea that has positive things compared to the mainstream alternatives.
I could put my girlfriends charade turbo engine into an S12 if I wanted, but it would be quite retarded... though it would be different and turbo, which fills all your requirements, it still would not be a good idea, and even when pulled off, would be embrassing
I'll also give you some ideas about power potential:
Stock: 110KW?
Basic exhaust and boost up : 140KW - will last a year or 2
Heavy turbo setup, dyno tuning, more injectors: 170KW - will last 12 months
Full forged rebuild, cams and other bits and pieces: 200KW - several years, but quite expensive
SR:
Stock: 140KW - last several years
Basic exhaust and boost up: 160KW - last several years
Heavy turbo and dyno tune with injectors: 220KW - last several years
Forged rebuild + cams etc - 300KW - last several years
So you can see that cost versus power versus reliability, the CA tends to lose on every end of the scale.
The CA is a great cheap alternative to more expensive motors to get moderate power gains and a quick car, however for you, it will not be quick, and your car isnt cheap, so why bother.
you're also forgetting the AGE of these engines. it's getting to the stage where they cant be drifted without a rebuild anymore... the bearings on these engines take a beating
first off
Im not a drifter
Im not doing this for the purpose of drifting
And you keep bringing up the fact that its in my s14, i just showed you it weighs basically the same, that argument is stupid.
What you suggest is I get an SR
First off cant afford an s14 sr, or even an s15 one
So i could go for a black top or red top s13 one, but then again its only a few years newer then the CA18DET
The CA18DET reaches its 166 lb ft of torque at 4400 rpm
the KA's 160 is at 4000 rpm
And no one in the 240 community will like it?
And zilvia has to be one of the worst forums for s and z chassis cars
its a bunch of rich stuck up bastards who flame everyone
it seems that the more people tell you not to do it
that your still going to do it!,
so just go for it,,
but doing it to be original is just as dumb as fixing up
a ca18et motor to be the fastest on here with that motor lol
sad but true,
im with asparagus on this
i have seen a 18det in a z33....why? Because its way lighter then a vg30dett, and it is way easier to work on. I can see the merit of putting the 18det into the s14 due to what the 18det does good...which no one here has seemed to mention...only thin i have heard so far are the downsides of the 18det. I dont feel a need to post the upsides of the 18det right now tho...because it looks like you guys will just regurgitate the sr's numbers at me...go back to your guys sr20 section if you dont like the 18det.
+1 to Asparagus...
Maybe you will put Daihatsu Cuore 1L turbo motor in it? It is TURBO! wink.gif
If you don't like SR or KA-T, go RB... maybe VG... or some 6 litres V8... wink.gif
I will do CA18DET swap in my car. But the main reason for this is the price for it and that it fits in S12 with minor changes... not like SR or other...
SR no
KA-T possibility
RB to heavy (RB20 just a CA18DET with more weight, 2 more cylinders, and .2 ltrs more of displacement)
VG30dett to heavy and way to big, pain to work on
VG30et possible
What you guys dont realize is im not doing it simply for the shock factor, Ill admit it will be cool when i pop my hood, and people are like what is that?
Im doing it for performance
Turbo CA > na KA
if you dont believe this you should just leave this section right now
You cant honestly tell me that with 50 lbs more of weight my car is going to run like a v6 mustang because that is bs
And what started the whole customizing cars thing, to be original, to do something different
Sure drop an SR in my s14...horay i now have a stock s14 silvia basically, that i spent around 3 grand for to buy and pay someone to do the swap
OR
I could do the CA
Use some friends help, learn along the way, have a finished car that is different. And be happy with a turbo 170 hp motor under my hood for under 2 grand
Black95s14 @ Oct 19 2007, 06:16 AM
RB20 just a CA18DET with more weight, 2 more cylinders, and .2 ltrs more of displacement
+2 cylinders = +++ torque and +++ reliability...
Black95s14 @ Oct 19 2007, 06:16 AM
And what started the whole customizing cars thing, to be original, to do something different
I think it started to get a better perfomance... You can do it in a waay less "pain in the ass" way and cheaper (ka-t i suppose).
Black95s14 @ Oct 19 2007, 06:16 AM
And be happy with a turbo 170 hp motor under my hood for under 2 grand
You can be wery disappointed when it will come to the reliability question... blush.gif
Anyway it's your choise. Why don't you ask about the wiring an S14 owner on the pic with ca18det with it?
He gave me a write up on wiring it up
says its not all that difficult
Black95s14 @ Oct 18 2007, 10:46 PM

sounds to me like someone cant handle a forum that actually has a purpose and meaning. let me guess....your on NICO..or 240sxforums.com..or any of the other gay as fuck and mis-informing messageboards for 240's arent you...grow some balls.
now that the flame fest is partially over...
the ca18 does not belong in a s14...give me a 5spd s14..and a ca18 s14..and i will show you one car that will asplode alot quicker. the KA is a great motor when done right
the SR is a great motor when done correctly. im sorry, but "sr fanboy" as you put it...so..does that make every single professional racer who uses the SR a fanboy???
look at formula D..i know your not doing this for drifting, but just look
just about every single s chassis you see competing in formula d..has an sr in it...are they all fanboys???
I would rather be an SR "fanboy" then some young kid with a retarded idea...good luck with failing
Holy shit man, you have your mind set. Why are you bothering posting about this when no one else's opinion matters to you? We told you that it's old, it has less potential, it's old, it's barely welcomed in an s13, it's really old, it has barely any aftermarket, finding shit is going to be hard for it, you're gonna feel disappointed, people are going to laugh when you open the hood(anyone who KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT NISSAN will know that the motor belongs in s12's and very early model s13's. The cool factor will last about 3 seconds, and you'll be impressing people who don't even know what a ca18det is to begin with).
You told us you don't know what a tailshaft is, then you ramble on about horsepower/torque figures you find on wikipedia, and then you say that it's 3k for an SR and someone else installing it and lastly mention that you'd do the CA install with your friends. I don't get it, you'd get an SR installed professionally and do the CA yourself? You're not clear, you're not informed, and apparently you have your mind set on putting a ca18det in your s14. Just do it already since you could care less about what people have to say on this forum.
And what started the whole customizing cars thing, to be original, to do something different
This is still retarded
And zilvia has to be one of the worst forums for s and z chassis cars
its a bunch of rich stuck up bastards who flame everyone
They know a lot more than you do, and that's enough for anyone who knows how to use zilvia. It's probably the best source for anything s and z chassis on the net, people there are actually well educated when it comes to things such as.. well, s and z chassis.

This is stupid because those formula D guys have money out the ass from sponsors
So dont go that route
And so i looked online for motor specs
Does that make them wrong??
I guess so
Only what asparagus says about any nissan is right
remember that other people on this site
ummmmmmm
money out the ass...what about the privateers who build the motor themselves?? such as joon maeng???

hey bitch i have a s14 and an s12...and i love love love them lol...but yea that comment about the 240 community trashing you is sooo true, be original put a vk56de in it hahaha thatd be sweet if you could...but a big ass engine swap for 20hp isnt worth it IMO...but the swap would be just like putting a redtop in an s14...i did that...wiring was a bitch but fitment was great, plus the sr weighs less than the ca...but the vq weighs even less
wow, i thought this forum was better then this.
i couldnt even read pst the first 3/4 of the thread. so much wrong info.
the ca is an awesome motor.
it is not inferior to the sr, the sr was cheaper to produce and more cost affective to produce.
the only reason there are more parts for the sr, its newer, and had a longer production run.
the ca has had shitloads of parts made, most are just out of production, but you can still find them, thanks to this wonderful internet.
the ca18 into s14 is easy, it bolts right in. the wiring is the same as s13 sr into s14 chassis, aside from one knock sensor wire.
to op, if you can think of it, someone has already done it.
i recomend the ca community on nicoclub.com.

I used to be all hyped about turbo but now it's all about torque in a NA. I want a VG30DE after my VG30E dies. Wanna build that up. Maybe like 300. But as for the CA18DET it did come in the 87-88 JDM MK2 Notches (RS-X). The Ca is a cool motor it just sounds funky in a S14. But do what it do.
Swaping in a Ca18det sounds like the stupid idea to me. If it were me, i would either turbo my ka (use the money from what you would use to buy a ca18et). Or save up your money and buy an sr.

I'm in agreement here. Good words bro.
Black95s14- I say go for it. Despite a couple of people being idiots, this is the right forum to be asking these kinds of questions. I dont think the CA18DET forum was created so people could bash on it. Being original and doing the work yourself are both respectable reasons to do something like this. This should be a relatively easy swap, on par with a first timer (assumption there) so I encourage you to go for it.
asparagus- You seem like a fairly talented guy who pays attention to detail. Why dont you allow that to validate your opinions rather than force them on everyone else? This is not the first time I've seen you throw your opinion at people here like it carries some weight. Relax. Provide info where its appropriate and other than that respect people bro. This is a pretty chill forum with a growing amount of technical knowledge. Respect, thats all I'm saying.
just swap it all ready we cant change your mind. just not what I would do but your not me. I am sure lots of people think having a s12 is a dumb idea and think its an old and inferior car. but we love them any way or else we wouldn't be here on this forum. and I did think of one good reason to swap out for the ca18det. no more timing chain rattle. looks like you got some support on here. not much from me but who cares I don't know shit about the ca. but people on this forum are for the most part nice and mean well even if they don't share your same ides. hope the ca18 guys can help you with your swap.
I really don't mean to offend anyone here, and of course I don't try to be a dick although I blatantly am in this thread. I'm looking at this thread and what the OP want's in pretty broad eyes here, and under other circumstances I'd be all for a ca18det s14.
Let me try to explain the way I feel about this thread without a condescending tone
I want to be completely original and drop a CA18DET into my S14
The opening sentence already (to me at least) sounds all bad, I already think he's doing this swap for all the wrong reasons. Then tells people "not to steal his idea", it's childish.
Im not an SR guy, never have been never will be
This quote also set me off a little, because it is without any credibility. Someone who doesn't have basic automotive or mechanical knowledge can pick sides now? He doesn't like the SR solely because there are too many fanboys? The only reasons he can give for liking the CA more is because it hasn't been swapped as much and the horsepower figures he find online are similar. Also says that he'd get an SR professionally installed but would do the CA with friends? I don't get it.
What comes off to me, and is repeated by the OP is that he wants to do it for originality. The only things that comes to my mind when I hear that word are digging for compliments or feeling special amongst the cookie cutter crowd, and I know that the vast majority of people who own s chassis will not like his swap. CA18DET isn't even that respected amongst s13's, s13 SR's are barely respected amongst s14's. I think the CA18DET in an s14 would set everyone off. It isn't going to get the attention that OP wants (again with the originality thing). But hey, he has his mind set so I don't understand why he has to come on here and cry about my opinion. Does he need more reassurance from everyone else to guarantee his seat in some sort of greatness throne?
In other, more purposeful circumstances, I would be all for this swap.
I'd say go for it...........and before this thread gets out of hand, it shall be locked. Sorry fella's
