Free The 200sx Notch

So my roommate and I are starting a 200SX project. It's actually his car, but I'll be putting about $1,000 into it in exchange for his VQ35HR/6speed. He's been on here before, TitaniumBMX, this is the 2nd 200SX to wind up in our garage. The last one turned out pretty cool and was sold a while later, so here's the next one...

I believe it's a 1986, but I could be wrong. Maybe 87. Notch. We got it for free from the goodwill store while looking for old computer parts, it was sitting abandoned in the parking lot and they told us to take it cuz the police wouldn't and they didn't know whose it was. It'd just been sitting there for months. So we brought it home, dusted it off and hotwired it. Fired right up, the only other mechanical problem was a flat tire and no radiator cap, so why it was abandoned is beyond me.

Anyways, the plan, so far that I know is to turn it into a little track car. Here's what we've done so far:
- Gutted the nasty ass interior
- Removed the shot fenders/bumpers and scraped off the bondo
- Removed a/c compressor and all a/c components in the engine bay
- Fashioned a little adapter and added a K&N filter
(by the way, it was really cool. Took an old Volvo 740 MAF and cut one of the ends off with a hacksaw. All the way flush with the metal surround on top and that piece we cut off bolted right up to the 200SX flapper, the cone secured right onto that. That was way easier than last time when we made it from a piece of aluminum IC piping.)
- Removed clutch fan, installed e-fan.

Not too much, but not bad for 2 days of work. We have a ton to do still..
- Needs new fenders/doors/bumper covers/SE kit
- Needs minor body work on the left rear panel
- Someone welded on a tow package that we've gotta figure out how to get off still
- Has a crappy automatic, which is going to kill the HP that this thing puts out.
- CA20E engine which puts out what, 4.5HP with a tailwind? SR20DET sounds good.
- Suspension/brakes
- Wheels/tires
- Yada yada, you know the drill. Every damn thing.

Should be fun... Might put up pics later tonight.

you lucky piece of shit!! i want a free notch

whats your location
take mad pics. whats the mileage on this 200sx?
you dont like tow packages? ive always wanted one

i think a mod is gonna merge these two same threads lol

MeatRoNov 4, 2008, 12:51 pm · #3

2 same threads?

We are in Southern California.. Camarillo to be specific.
Not sure what the mileage is.
The problem with the tow package is it was put on by somebody's friend's uncle's cousin's brother's neighbor's co-worker who happened to have a shitty welder and he welded it to weird ass places, like to the bolts that secure the rear bumper. It's genius.

well kind of

MeatRoNov 4, 2008, 4:58 pm · #7

Ok... So as far as suspension, get the springs taken care of, AGX's bolted on there.

Now, onto the sway bars. There's Addco, but there's a problem with the Addco's. The problem is $200 per bar.

Are there stock sway bars that are just as efficient from another vehicle? If not, what about dual bars? A lot of guys on Volvo forums do that.. Just make a plate that bolts to the stock sway bar location with an extra set of holes in it for a 2nd sway bar to bolt onto the plate. They say it works great and saves them $350 from having to buy iPd bars.

[edit]

We can pick up Z31 turbo bars for $40 each. 2" wide steel piece of metal is free, drill some holes in it and bada-bing. Saves $150 on a rear Addco bar.
Then the front isn't even worth that, we can grab S13 bars for like $120 and bolt that bitch straight on.

Here's the numbers the guy came up with...
16+16 = 19.027 __ 19+19 = 22.595 __ 21+21 = 24.973 __ 23+23 = 27.352 __ 25+25 = 29.730
16+19 = 21.037 __ 19+21 = 23.873 __ 21+23 = 26.243 __ 23+25 = 28.615
16+21 = 22.581 __ 19+23 = 25.307 __ 21+25 = 27.657
16+23 = 24.242 __ 19+25 = 26.866
16+25 = 25.988
[/]

titaniumbmxNov 4, 2008, 6:31 pm · #8

its an 86.

addco is good

dual is bad remember that extra weight = bad (almost 45Lbs)

that volvo thing is cool but it wont work the same on the s12 its a different design
and it independent rear

and 1x z31 turbo bar is more than enough

From your welcome thread...

MeatRo
Cool. There's that solved, $90 for a new HG. Dude, are these right? I'm bored as shit over here without my boss here...

- KA24DE/5 Speed
- CM Springs $200
- KYB AGX Shocks for MR2 $120
- KYB AGX rear shocks for Mustang $180
- Z31 24MM Rear sway bar $45
- S13 Front sway bar $120
- SE body kit $175
- Front fenders $60
- Front/rear bumper covers $100
- Welded differential
- Flat black spray paint
- Left rear body work

Add it up, $1000. LoL

I do think this is the best option, the VG30E would have needed an SE model crossmember. The KA is bolt in and will give you a HUGE increase in power with just 2.5" exhaust (trust me I know firsthand), then you can either get an SR20DET as you were both thinking before, or just turbocharge the KA, which has also been done quite successfully. Go visit http://www.ka-t.org for more info.

I don't really like the dual swaybar idea though, honestly before you stiffen the sways up, make sure you have the rubber to grip. With cheap tires, a little chassis flex actually helps prevent you from losing traction. Once you tighten the sways, your tires now do all the work, so they had better be really good tires. Something to think about.

MeatRoNov 4, 2008, 6:55 pm · #10

@TiBMX
Yeah, that's what I was wondering.. If the 1 Z bar would suffice. And if not, then would duals. Anything to skimp on $200 for one bar.. you Nissan people are crazy.

And if that's a 45# bar, I'm gonna laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh.

@Arro
The VG was out after I read about the work to the X-member, I was under the impression it was just a drop-in as well. Most likely won't wind up KA-T, tho.. Just sell the KA and use that towards the SR. KA's are cute, but he's on a SR binge, so for sure it won't stay that way.

ArroNov 4, 2008, 7:04 pm · #11

lol @ "SR binge"

I'm sure someone on here  and in socal will want to snatch up that KA when the time comes.

FOR THE TACOS! YES!!!

Looking good guys, I remember a similar adventure just a few months ago with my car!  except, my car is all rusty and shit!  Are you going to pound all the rubber shit off the floor?
LeegamerNov 5, 2008, 7:49 am · #17

Keep working and the tacos will keep flowing...Looks good though.  I'm interested in seeing how this turns out.

We will be trying dry ice on the sound deadener later on this afternoon.

Thanks for the replies.

F*CK THE FREE NOTCH

PUTTING 1K INTO A CAR IN EXCHANGE FOR A VQ35HR + 6 SPEED??  I would sell kidneys for that engine and tranny...
I'd sell testicals as well, but I dont think theres a high demand for those...

MeatRoNov 5, 2008, 11:57 am · #20

Yeah.... But it's used. 8,000+ miles on it, it's got no ECU, no wiring harness. I said $725, take it or leave it. But somehow I got conned into $1,000. TB, you bastard..

Just kidding, I'm stoked. And the testicle thing doesn't work, I tried posting mine on CL in exchange for a R34 GT-R or $65,000, but nothing doing.

ArroNov 5, 2008, 2:19 pm · #21

Hmm automatic tranny means a bit more custom welding, but still this looks like it's in good hands. TACOS FTW! EXTRA FUCKING HOTSAUCE!

What kind of welding needs to be done? Do you know, Joe? Custom trans mounts or what? Not a big deal, just curiosity.

titaniumbmxNov 5, 2008, 3:42 pm · #24

for the sr? just a trans mount and a driveshaft i think...maybe engine mounts too

ArroNov 5, 2008, 3:50 pm · #25

For an SR? Nahhh man, first off the SR and the KA both mount right into the engine bay if it was a CA20E car. So you're good to go there, just use the KA engine mounts and you'll be fine. Yeah the trans is an automatic so the mount has to be custom, take a look here:

Automatic to S13/14 Manual Trans converson thread.

Lots of pics and great info there by Waylon (IggyEguanna) who has done this himself. Should be what you need to get you going in the right direction. SR and KA and CA18DET all use similar transmissions, so the path should be the same. He used a 1-piece driveshaft, but you don't have to if your car is independent rear suspension... the S12 driveshaft is in two pieces. You just use the S12 rear section and a manual trans S13 front section and it will be fine... that's what I have on my car w/ S13/14 trans and so do a few others.

MeatRoNov 5, 2008, 3:56 pm · #26

Thanks, man. Yeah, I seen that thread while looking for info about the drive shaft which will most likely end up S12 rear S13 front sections.. Must have overlooked the mount, but that's a snap.

If we find a manual S12, I assume we can use that mount with no modification? There may be 1-2 in the yard down here. Usually is.

Thanks again.

[edit: And what of the pedal assemblies, m/s cylinders, etc? Can those come out of the S13?

titaniumbmxNov 5, 2008, 4:13 pm · #27

woohoo junkyard searchin' we shall go... good clean fun. er.. well not realy clean but...

What year is this car? It's an 86 right? That's iffy on the mount then... the Mark II chassis (87 and 88) isnt so bad, but I think the Mark I the automatic chassis is different than the manual, so you can't just run a manual crossmember.... you'd have to do exactly what IggyEGuana did with his modified mount. I know some 86 is what we call Mark 1.5, because some of them are like Mark I, some are like Mark II...

Anyways I suspect you will need to modify the crossmember it came with, same as Iggy did. Read in detail on this thread, he talks more about that in particular.

As far as pedal assemblies, just stick with S12 manual pedals... the S13 ones are way off from what I've heard from a guy who tried to do it. Master cylinder, you can use an S13, but make sure it's the right one for the stronger grab... look around, we just had a thread on this, the right one has the proper number stamped on the side (can't remember off the top of my head).

Edit: the info for the master cylinder is here.
MeatRoNov 5, 2008, 5:15 pm · #29

Nice, thanks, Arro. I'll keep all that in mind while browsing the yard.. BM44, 15/16" MC. And the mount isn't a problem, might even save a few bucks.

Sorry, seems like I'm not searching. I'm just sneaking posts in every few minutes, no personal internet use here.

ArroNov 5, 2008, 5:17 pm · #30

One nice thing about putting in a KA24DE for the time being, when you put in the SR20DET, you can keep the KA tranny, I think all you need to change is the bellhousing. But all the other shit will be done.

titaniumbmxNov 5, 2008, 7:12 pm · #31

yep that was the plan, unless the ka turns out to be all we need as far as power goes. ka-t or ka with ITBs and high compression running on standalone. we'll see

MeatRoNov 8, 2008, 12:16 am · #32

Not sure how to embed videos here, or if I even can, so here's the S12 starting up tonight.

Youtube

Got most of the front sound deadener out today, we used dry ice to get it out and worked great. Other than that, nothing really.. Installed a new ignition, hard-wired the e-fan temporarily and put a can of Restore in. Gotta go to the junkyard tomorrow and see if we can't find some fenders, bumper covers and a couple other small parts.

ArroNov 8, 2008, 12:17 am · #33

You can't, but you can do what you did

titaniumbmxNov 8, 2008, 12:44 am · #34

it was free and now it s alive  muhuhaha. i had to steal the battery off of my s13 to get her going. oh and by the way her name is scarlet.

MeatRoNov 8, 2008, 10:55 pm · #35

Went to the junkyard today and picked up a few things.. Found a 1988 V6 SE in there, most of the SE kit was already gone, but we got 3 of the mudflaps and the sideskirts. It was a 5 speed also, so we got the clutch pedal assembly and the master cylinder. The fenders were pretty banged up, so we skipped those, picked up a couple pieces for the interior also including a delete under the stereo and the 5 speed shift boot and knob. There was a harness bar lying around from a different project and it bolted right into the S12, now we just need to fab up some struts and it will be functional. Painted the interior black and took a few pictures. We picked up some other things too like degreaser, Lucas fuel treatment and some truck bed coating for when we have ALL of the sound deadener out, it looks nicer.

Coming this weekend for the S12... XXR 002 16x8 Wheels & tires. $400.

We've also got access to a S13 parts car with adjustable front shocks. I've been reading up on how to convert strut tubes into coilovers and it's fairly simple. We've got all the core parts and tools to do it, www.colemanracing.com has all the other parts we'll need like the threaded coilover adjusters, springs, camber plates and everything else. From the parts we have available, we could make completely adjustable coilovers for about $150.

This is a setup a guy made for his Volvo back before we have Kaplhenke coilovers available.

Blah, the guy all the sudden isn't going to be around this weekend = no wheels. Gay.

Anyways, everything seems pretty set, looks like in the next week or two, this S12 will recieve:

16"x8" XXR 002 Wheels / Tires ($400)
S13 Spindles/Shocks/Struts ($50 from our roommate's parts car)
S13 Godspeed Front Sway (about $75 after our friend's discount)
S13 Coilover Spring Kit ($50 shipped on eBay. Front solution, possibly rear also.)
Z31 Turbo Rear Sway (Junkyard)
Chopped Rear Springs (Free)
Rear Limit Straps ($20)
New L/R Fenders (Still waiting for shipping quote)
Flat Black Paintjob ($25)

I think that will almost do it for my $1,000 into this car. A couple more small things and that's about it, but it should be a nimble little bastard for what it will be.. If we can acquire a KA24E/5spd for cheap, it will even be fun.
