i was thinking we could have a subforum dedicated to driving routes...

since our cars handle well, and theres a large following of grip drivers, perhaps we can list certain roads or even tracks across the country, o.p.s can post pics and specific information like distance, speed limits, danger areas, speed traps, etc.

i was inspired driving up ortega highway yesterday.

lmk what you think

The dragon's tail Or US129. It's on the border between South carolina and tennessee.

Also, Hocking Hills Ohio. some of the most fun driving roads as a whole.

Oh wait... This was a question for the mods. My bad!

Haha gogo jay.

Anyways, I dont think we need a section, but maybe a stickied thread somewhere that we can help maintain.

Haha....large following? I think that is being a little generous. It seems like the vast majority of s12 owners into motor sports are into drifting which is not surprising givin how popular it is. I am definitely all for a thread at the very least for cool back roads and mountain roads. Cali especially is littered with them. There are a few mountain roads I frequent here at Mt. Rainier and Mt. Saint Helens. No thanks to drifting on those. You lose control once you die in a horrible crash rolling down the side of a mountain.

Honestly I'm not sure I'd say our cars handle "well"... I think after a lot of work, i.e. bushings, struts/shocks, springs, nearly-fruitless attempts to correct front and especially rear camber... we handle "ok".

That aside, I agree with Xano, a thread is fine, but a forum is a little much. The problem with that kind of thread is some people could take it as advocating illegal driving activities on public roads... drifting on public roads, for instance is illegal and also highly dangerous to both driver and other people on the road.

Now, I love to canyon carve, but I know I'm taking big risks when I do that kinda crap. On some forums, they will flame you, and tell you to save your pennies and do it on the road course, rather than risk innocent lives. I'm not that extreme, but a section on here would be -- IMO -- advocating that. Maybe some of you might not think that is the case, but some of you *might*, and that possibility is enough for me to say no.

HOWEVER, like I said a thread sounds reasonable. So I might as well contribute to this one.

The Los Angeles County roads are getting crowded with both normal traffic and with more and more idiots who think they're hot shit. Stay away from Malibu Canyon... it's not what it used to be. Trabuco Canyon is probably the best bet.

Stay away from Glendora Canyon in eastern Los Angeles County. I know that lots of guys have raved about it, but the roads are narrow and there are waaaay too many blind curves. If you're out that way, you'll be a bit safer and still very satisfied with the canyon road to Baldy, just north of Upland. Even comes complete with tunnels. Roads are FAR wider and in much better condition than Glendora Canyon, and the drops aren't massive.

In San Bernardino County, you can try your hand at the 330, which you can access from the city of Highland, right off of the 210 freeway. Watch out, occasional CHP, but nice, well-maintained roads and some great turns. Just be careful, the drops are really deep.

In Orange County, you have very few roads leading over the mountains to southern Riverside County, but the best one seems to be Ortega Highway, or "Highway 74". A very twisty road, with some amazing turns. Sometimes you get a break and get to go a good distance before some really slow jackass ends the fun. They're working on the western sections of the road, but most of it is still very functional for getting the heartrate up. Good road conditions and in most places, few drop-offs -- until you get to the final leg into Lake Elsinore, where you're coming down off the mountain.

In San Diego County, Mussey Grade Rd/Kimball Valley Rd/Barona Rd to Barona Casino, just southeast of Escondido. Lots of switchbacks, excellent road conditions, low traffic, and very scenic. A bit further east and south of that are many other similar roads of the same or better quality, including one that winds up to the top of a very high mountain. As a side note, there are lots of truck trails for those of you who happen to also own a trail dawg and want to go exploring.

Palomar Mountain in San Diego county, Take 76 (Which isn't bad either) east past the 2 casinos and up the Mountain, can do the back side as well.

I think for grip driving the s12 has a lot more of an advantage than for drifting (at least for the IRS). It also depends what your comparing to it. Even the much advanced s13/s14 suspension is not perfect. As for risks of canyon driving I think that really depends on the people doing it. A little spirting driving is one thing but being completely reckless and double laneing on blind corners is a whole other ball game. Besides that on some of the mountain roads I drive in the cascades at 5 or 6 thousand feet with a drop off 1 to 2 thousand feet down....how fast do you really wanna push it? I mean most of the time just basically doing the speed limit I get a little nervous haha.

Wow, breathtaking. I take it that's by Rainier...
RedneckJul 28, 2009, 7:08 am · #11

Yeah that is indeed Mt. Rainier in the background. The road goes all the way to 6,400 feet and is the highest paved road in Mt. Rainier national park. Only about an hour and a half drive from Seattle.

Suspension is getting fixed up front right now actually. Should be ready tommorrow. Got new wheels/tires, got glass for the whole car, fender flares, new brakes up front, suspension up front is getting fixed with new stock parts for the first time in 100k miles. I'm down for some roads.

I dunno man, My numbers are pretty good...

@ 65 mph I pull .8 lateral g all day on my all season 14's. That's a good (not the best) number for an SCCA comp car. After that the front just pushes, but that will be better with some lower profile more grippy tires.
Understeer tire screech. gotta love it   But then I goose it a little bit and BOOM! oversteer goodness!

Just looked it up, the Spoon sports Honda fit does 1.09 g's
And the Spoon S2000 does 1.19
^ For those I don't know what speeds they were going at. I would think it's a fairly linear curve though...

Mind you, I have full interior, and haven't scaled out the corners yet. I think I could crack 1.15 or higher with a proper balancing, tires, wheels and weight shedding. That's just a rough guess though
ArroJul 28, 2009, 2:55 pm · #14

well I'm not in doubt that the S12 can be competitive, just that it's not "great"... like I said we can get much out of upgrades and such.

Let's keep it on the topic of roads tho.

Yes yes.....I agree.  Especially once you get up past Pollock Pines when it turns to 2 lane.

Also...Hwy 9 between Santa Cruz, and Monterey.

Also, anywhere on Hwy 1 north of San Francisco

Is there a way to make this so only people with say 10 posts can view this? So no cops lurking car forums see this lol. If no one cares no biggie then

While it is always a good thing to be cautious I don't think there is anything to worry about. It isn't like were talking about anything illegal we are just talking about good roads to take a drive on. Speeding was never implied. If someone wants to go over the speed limit that is at their own risk .
KeithJul 30, 2009, 1:08 am · #20

nothing to worry about...i doubt very many cops (if any) are browsing cs12.....it would be a waste of resources since 95% of s12's are slow as balls
