not to hijack, but was it previously in a Datsun 210?

dang, sucks that i missed out on that. i want to build one, now that i am seeing what they are capable of.

keep ears out, id dont REALLY want to shell out the cash to have one shipped that someone already built.

They're hard to find. The only places that I see them fairly consistantly is AUS. Which is alotta money. I've seen two on E-bay, both on the west coast, which your closer to. I passed on both out of fear of not being able to get parts. What if a head is cranked or a crank is scored to deep, ya know.

Good luck, I hope you find one. Wish I could find one, but I'm probably going to go with a 4G63, MZR, or CA18det instead when I have money for my S12 again. - gotta be able to get parts, so I'm not afraid to use it. After I try out this wankle. I keep thinking Chevette for my wankle, suddenly theres no Chevettes.

@JonB:
Yeah Aus seems to have successfully dominated the worlds population of FJ's. Ive been on the fj forums looking for one and even scarce on there. The parts thing is kinda scary for me as well, but, I suspect that crower or someone of the likes could make a good duplicate if need be.
If you want a chevette, your close enough to WV to get one. Just check around, everyone and their grandma had a chevette when i lived there. I forget the name of their paper, but i still have a crap ton of friends out there if you want me to ask around. coincidentally i drove a chevette for a year that had a mildly built 350 in it(bought it like that) it was a blast on the gravel roads.

I guess i just want an Fj for the end result of having a good NA engine with some power to it.

Good N/a motor with power?

Get a 350, nobody has done that yet. You can be first.

tommyFeb 4, 2011, 11:39 am · #10

^^^we actually never saw the completion, the block was in the bay, attached to a powerglide if my memory serves me right, but nobody ever knew if the thing manage to run or even if it was ever finished

MaxpowFeb 4, 2011, 1:41 pm · #11

Damn. I would rock one :P
until you find out what spare parts cost ;-)
i could get a FJ for 120$ which need new bearings-->my RB was cheaper than the bearings and gaskets

LMFAO ok, Maybe if i go back to work i would. Pay for that thing in a week or less

I didn't take my own advice.

Navy_Mech2Sep 10, 2012, 9:15 pm · #17

jon are you talking about the 2.3 DISI MZR motor? gonna need a custom manifold and figure out what to do with the throttle body. that motor is only mounted in a FWD setup and the throttle body will face the rear of the car. not to mention finding a tranny setup

JonBSep 10, 2012, 9:42 pm · #18

I think the new miata is sporting the MZR.

I was also considering the 4g63.

My skills need freshened up, but I have a tig and was prepared to go all out on a swap - in the future. I was/am building a domestic v8 currently.

I ended up with an FJ20, I don't know how it's going to go; the whole thing causes me anxiety over parts availability. It's got crank problems; and the solutions aren't coming as fast as I'd like.

The intent is to get all the parts for the Fj, including magging the ones I have now, then I could relax a little. Im trying to get everything I need now, and I could build it later, which is tough without breaking the bank - winter is coming and I'm in a new really old house - I don't know what the heat is going to do. There seems to be a fair amount of FJ stuff overseas yet, but the words are towards it getting rougher to source.

The MZR doesn't seem to be an open deck design, which I prefer the closed deck. Also it, like the 4g63 appears to be a direct cam on bucket design, which I prefer. Keep in mind I haven't looked at it in a while, nor have I kept up on the aftermarket support for them. The bore to stroke also seems to be toward my preference more so than the 4g63. I actually want to keep a 2.0 and not go any larger - strange I know. Maybe still - never know what the future holds. I'm just working on getting all the parts to say I have a good Fj, then I'll go from there. But anyway, the MZR did seem promising. Gm's 4 is making good power, and they're all over the place, but given the choice, I'm for the cam on bucket as opposed to the follower system. The SR20s, and the ecotecs are both followers - I just like that big fat cam on bucket head, I think it really doesnt matter for what I want to do, I just prefer them.

What exact parts are you looking for I might be able to help you.

JonBSep 11, 2012, 5:11 am · #20

Crankshaft :woow:

ArroSep 11, 2012, 2:07 pm · #21

If for some reason you decide to give up on the FJ, there are some of us in the States who will probably want parts. Although I don't understand why you are feeling so much anxiety over it. Crankshafts are out there. When I go to JCCS I'll poke around for you with some of the FJ lovers there.

JonBSep 11, 2012, 3:40 pm · #22

Thanks Arro.

I'm still in the game for a crank. I did hear good news today; the crank I have now should be getting welded by the end of the week. They, the machine shop, is straightening it from the weld also. They said they got bearing that will fit so they can recut the thrust. This means it passed the mag, which I was sweating.

This just leaves the crank without nitriding or any other wear restart surface. Which I don't know what I'm doing about that yet. So it looks like I have one crank with a "history". Being steel, it's natural wear isn't so hot. Maybe a powder coat, but the shop wants to do the bearings.

The machine shop asked for the block today, concerned about the amount of walk in the crank - hurting the block and bearing fitment - I can't get down there with work. I can see no tell of crank contact on any webs. I can't find a competent person to deliver the block as I have a responsibility to be at work.

I'm certainly not parting the motor, ive wanted one of these puppies for quite some time. It's just so rare to me; the Fj, it's making me panic and hoard a little.

Going wiseco, spool, and a touch less boost than the gas pump will let me use. Still gotta mag all the valves and retainers - I drop one I'm doomed.
