Nice clean car. If i could afford to i would import this fine car. I even know where to get FJ stuffs

AndrewFNov 23, 2012, 1:52 pm · #5

Just to explain. The body and chassis of this car is completely origin Nissan.
They have built around 700 of them.
I also have the origin NISSAN GP body kit molds.

If you know a US soldier, based in Germany, you could find a cheap transport solution into the US. I can do the export paper work. As far as I know, those soldiers are allowed to transport a car around every 24 months.

yeah to bad the molds even would be to much for me to import.
I could actually put them to use.

^ who couldn't

TechDaddyNov 28, 2012, 3:07 pm · #11

What type of lay up are the molds set up for? Wet, Chopper gun or are they Vacume baggable? If the flanges are wide enough these could be done a lot lighter than original. Hell if we can get these over here to the States there is a much bigger market than in Europe. How the heck did you get ahold of the molds?

AndrewFNov 29, 2012, 7:21 am · #12

Well, the GP Kit was made out of glassfiber parts. Also the molds are made out of glassfiber.
I also have also a V6 hood mould, which I made for the Nismo S12 racer.
I got the moulds direct from Nissan. I made them a few set's out of it for their spare part stock.
After they closed Nissan Switzerland, they destroyed all their spare parts. So, there are no further GP-Kit spare parts around! :rip:
These moulds an my set's are the last available spare parts around (world wide).
I could put all the moulds into a big box and can send it to the us. Cheaper would be you get hold on a logistic partner in the US and they pick it up.
I could make it ready for transport!
Also the above S12 GP is an official, means the serial number is assigned to one of the registered 700s. :nerdystraight:

Update:
The GP Kit is wide enough to use 10" wide wheels in the back and around 9" in the front. :wideeyed:

OMG, I want these molds. I talked to Collin/Draconis yesterday, he said he met with you during his trip. Unfortunatly I do not have the funds currently to pull this off. The expertise, yes, but not the funds. How wide are the flanges on the molds? If they are over 3" or 38cm it makes these molds much more useable from a lightweight composites standpoint. Might even be able to go with infused carbon fiber which would be far stronger and lighter than a hand layup/vacume bag setup. I'm going to assume that they are not high temp epoxy molds though. That would be sweet. Then we could go with pre-preg Carbon Fiber and really improve the strength/weight. The hood mould would be a godsend as well. Many of us have talked about building one, but to get a hold of a Nissan created mold would be totaly awesome! I looked all over for pictures of a factory NISMO S12 race car and could not find one. any vintage photos you could post?

very clean gp. The Grand prix has really grown on me lately.

AndrewFNov 29, 2012, 9:32 am · #15

OK, I'm not sure what you mean with the wide 3".......

The parts are:
2 front fenders (complete, stock ones throw away  :wideeyed2:)
2 rear fenders (complete, stock ones have to be in place, or you have a subframe)
2 side skirts (between the fenders)
1 fuel-port

How much wider the complete car then is, I've to check. But the wheels which are covered could be up to 10" wide.
I will send you some pictures of y full size V6, I had.

Ah, the measurement I am looking for is on the mould itself. It would be the smooth flat perimeter (run-off) around the outside of the mould face. How wide is that surface. Some tool makers cut it pretty close to the mould face. When you are going to use a vacume bag to evacuate all of the air from your lay-up however you need a wider flange to attatch the bag. Though I have had to resort to sealing to the floor on one mould that would not stop leaking. Everyone thought I was crazy but it worked. I'm just trying to see what we have to work with and what our options are.

AndrewFNov 29, 2012, 3:39 pm · #17

Well, there are some "flat out's", because if you make some hand crafted glassfiber parts, you make them larger and cut them afterwards into the correct shape.
But unfortunately, as far I know, these molds are 2 and 3 piece, because there are some negative areas in the parts. There you have very little further space.

The only way to change those molds into vacuum like molds is, to make the opposite.
Means, bedding the mold into a foam or sand bed, fill in your material and cover it up with a special "balloon", which has to be pressured up. It works after pressuring like a stamp.

The only you can do, is to extend the molds for your needs. Thanks to glassfiber you can make them wider and thicker (they are right know heavy, 6 to 8 layers gf), as your needs are.

But I wondering me why you want to do this.
We made the parts with one fine, thin glass-layer and 2 thicker ones. You have to craft them well with good tools and less liquid resin and you will get light, strong and sun stable items.
With carbon you will spare not more than a few gram and if you have an impact you will have to spend 3 times more money for a new one.
You spare much more Wight with special windows, interior, peeling out all the bitumen floor damping, etc....

Any possibility on getting some pictures. Americans seem to be all consumed with Carbon Fiber. I have to agree with you, for a road car Glass Fiber is far better and much cheaper. The process I am looking to do is different than what you are describing. Photos would help a lot! I figured that the moulds would be multi-piece, that's not the issue and I can work with almost anything. The molds I commonly work with are 20-30 layers thick.

AndrewFNov 29, 2012, 4:10 pm · #19

I think I know what you mean.
Of course, if you vacuum the molds they have to be thicker. They have some extra profiles in the back to make them stiff, but I think you need more.
Give me a few days, because it is difficult to describe what I mean. They are in my industrial stock, 5m high in a railway steel box, to secure them. I'll climb up to them an make some pictures during the next days.

TechDaddyNov 29, 2012, 4:19 pm · #20

I'd love to see what you have there. I'm pretty sure I know what you are saying. They last place I worked before Boeing, we were doing Vacume infusion of Carbon Fiber for Ornate Carbon Fiber Sea Stairs for Yachts. Super high end stuff. this obviously does not need to be that complex but I would like to know what the possibilities are. Take your time on the photo's, I'll see them when they are availale.

The Nissan S12 CA18ET "Grand Prix" found his new owner in the East.  :yay!:
A collector who is happy with it and he also will take care of it and keep it in stock condition.
