Cajun1guy on 06:16:58 PM / 01-Jun-15Man, I am surprised at all the aerospace techies here! And y'all flying R/C stuff! I've been doing that for ages (probably before most of y'all were born!) I love my R/C helis, just no time to deal with them lately. Also love flying larger scale, and catching rides in some of the aircraft I work on. Time spent aloft is not deducted from total time, long as you make sure the trees stay small.

are you of the age that think gyros are cheating? lol . I know some of those guys.

Oh HELL no! I want my HL gyro doing what God designed it to do.  I started with a Kavan Jet Ranger (yeah, that's dinosaur) without a gyro. NO FUN, crashed it several times. I am no 3D dude, just fly like the real thing, smooth and precise.

How do y'all RC Fogeys feel about the new trend of calling any radio controlled toy a "drone"?

It's only a matter of time before idiots use low entry skill quadcopters to get RC flyers banned, or "regulated" by flying where they shouldn't be. Plus, we get these HORRIBLE  reports of unwitting civilians being harassed/spied on by these DRONES.

Drones, I tell ya!! The Drones are coming to spy on us and take nudies of our loved ones to sell to ISIS!

I think this is Furby-esque fad fear, but it unfortunately affects the people who really do (and have/are able to responsibly) the RC hobby.

I fly a compass 7hv . fly 3d I guess . not really a stick banger but it spends more time spinning and flipping than it does skids down.  here is a video form a while back.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RxxL4n7PsE  . I am a good bit better now but dont have any recent videos of the heli.

I hope its a fad. I dont understand why people think they are going to be getting spied on. I have a  f550 hex with apm and a brushless gimbal. I have no interest in spying on anyone. only thing I have ever done  that would be considered spying is when I sent it to my buddies house that is about  1/4 mike away to test range. and I told him to expect it when it was on its way. video turned out pretty cool  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcEU8Tpcbnk  . I gave up on calling it a hexcopter when talking to general public. they dont understand what it is. so I just say I have a drone . I am not botherin or harassing any one with mine. no one has ever even noticed it. I have flown at some events and later asked if any one had seen it. when its 400ft in the air you can not here it .

I am fascinated by the quads and such. The technology is awesome, problem is uncaring assholes who want to fly in airport approach paths, that is totally asinine! Putting people in danger to get "great" video will get all of us who obey the rules to lose our hobby. There are the perps who use these things to spy, but a few lawsuits will make that sort of thing rare. Good sharp shooting will take out some drones that violate others' privacy I am sure.
I love the videos that are made with sophisticated drones, my son is in the film industry and has seen some big ones hauling big cameras.
Hey guys, this is a great theme, real nice to know what y'all do! Whether ya sling parts or design huge machinery, we all seem to be contributing to society and keeping a great line of vehicles out there as well!

Apart from being a traveling backyard mechanic i also build natural gas plants, Expand their storage facilities and build truck out stations. Recently spent a bit of time at a canola oil plant.. I use to get to operate equipment like the bob cat and telehandler and ran a picker truck for a bit but new company is a little more strict with equipment licensing and drivers tho so i can only operate the pickers now and Aerial work platforms hahaha. i could be a journeymen red seal Steamfitter/Pipefitter by now but never went to school (cause im an idiot) but am going to school in October, might do 2 years back to back.

My 9-5 gig is a CAD system administrator for a rail firm.  Mostly support and configuration stuff with some coding mixed in.  Basically I live the movie Office Space.  I also have a part time retail job where I do mostly inventory control.

The family business is setting up custom supercharger systems on various light aircraft.  Check out http://www.forcedaeromotive.com/ for more information.  It is MASSIVELY awesome work . . . if/when you can find a paying customer.

Having been back in Iceland this summer, I am part owner and main operator of a cafe/bar and running a hostel/apartment.  Its soooo much work but its the stages of expanding and getting a good start and improvement

In the intervening period I got that job at Softlayer Technologies, an IBM company. Now I get paid to keep a visible percentage of the internet working. So that's cool.

Modulus TwoSep 2, 2015, 2:34 pm · #14

4chan doesn't count in the visible percentage XD

Well, we just got a lease with a certain wrist-based pedometer manufacturer for 384 bare metal servers. The processors alone for this lease cost $950,000. Or they would have, had Procurement ordered the right procs. They ended up accidentally ordering a different model and spending $1,700,000 on them. And the leasee doesn't want to pay the extra fee for that processor, so we have to order replacements and install them.

I think somebody got fired.
