Ok guys...
My buddy has a 1990 camaro rs. it has the 305 5.0 liter v8 engine.(tbi) its 5 spd, has a muffler, and an air filter. he recntly put a posi on it for drifting. My s12 is super stock.. i mean like SUPER stock..! no filter no nothing. i have alot of mods for it in my room but havent put any on yet.anyways, we were bored so we decided to run it.
Before he put the posi..
We launch and i jump on him out the whole about a cars length. when we throw second gear i feel him comin slowly but surely. end of 2nd gear right when we throw third i stay at his back bumper. he wont move away. he just stays there infront.
Factory specs on his cam for 1/4 mile is 16 flat. ours is 16.5 i think? i have the ca18et.
After the posi..
We launch and i jump a bumper infront of him. then 2nd gear the same shyt. he pulls on me slowly and when we throw third im right behind him.
I know that if i get the piping on the front mount done and turn up the boost a tad ill beat him. (i have the front mount on the car just not connected) but he doesnt know that. and he doesnt know the potential of the s12. i will write up my kill on his camaro when i do a few mods :)
he won the battle but, ill win the war...;)

s12 vs Camaro v8 Part 1
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Jun 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
Good luck man. I will kinda have the same thing going with me soon, once I can get mods... But my buddy has a '90 Camaro... Dead stock. Well, actually he made it heavy with a stero system. 1 amp and 2 12" subs plus box. Dumbass... he says he toasted an RX-7 (BTW he has a slushbox, not a stick!), and I believe him because the RX-7 guy propably didn't know how to launch. Anywho, once I get my mods... He'll quickly get respect for certian imports. He's a hater. If its not at least a domestic, he hates it and thinks its slow. Which is true, for now...
Yeah man, new age muscle car guys think really close minded about cars. all about there big displacement cam'd out motors and nothing else...
On another note.My friend agreed and gave me permission to film the race between him and i when i get the mods done.I also got his permission to post the vid up here on the site. so expect a camaro vs s12 vid comin soon... :)
CA18ET should be doin betta than a 16.5 1/4mile stock!
Anyone got stats?>>>
But, good job!
I like the fact that a 1.8lt engine can cain engines with double the pistons and double the litres!!! LOL, (like a CA18DETvs5.7lt SS Commodore(or in america, Chev 5.7lt sumtin, lol)
ahhh, the Holden Commodore... hahaha
Yea, really. I think you can punch low 15's stock. If you Plug the POV, get a BOV in the right spot and install a boost controller. I think high 14' are possible. Cuz with the T2 overboosting, you can get an extra 15hp or so for anothe couple tenths.
Just because he has an amp, two 12s, and a box, it doesn't mean it's heavy ;)
Two cheap POS 12s - maybe 8 lbs. a piece
2 ft^3 cheap POS 5/8" particle board enclosure - maybe 30 lbs.
Cheap POS amp - maybe 10 lbs.
All in all, if he got nothing but garbage, he'd only be looking at like 55-60 lbs. of extra weight, which is nothing to a Camaro (~1.5% weight gain)
With a good enclosure (heavily braced 3/4" MDF or thicker), top-line, high-power subs, and a good high-output amp, he'd probably be looking at well over 150 lbs., though ...
lol...it is to a TB camaro with about 185 hp :)
My buddy has an '85 Z28 (305 High Output)
the first race, he won hands down, i had some clutch slippage issues..lol FIXED!
the second race, DEAD EVEN..but i still had the 1-3000 rpm lack of power, working on that now..he's since put in a whole new High Voltage 45kV ignition system. we'll see..i think if my 1-3000 rpm comes back, ill have him!
yea i raced a 240sx tonight with my rx7, i smoked him but he got me off the launch, b/c rx7s have a extremely shitty tourqe band and are verry hard to launch.
so i could see him beating a rx7 i beat a v6 camero w/ my 7 :headbang:
I've got an 89 Trans Am with the TPI 305 and a 5 speed, and it's no slouch, but it's not exactly something to brag on. The only 3rd gen F-bodys (Firebird/Camaro) that were actually fast were the 90-92 350 TPI's, which only came in Z28's, T/As, and Formula 350's. You should have no problem beating him with the mods.
In fact, I think a well tuned CA20 with a couple bolt on's could probably hang with an automatic TB 305...
I love my Chevy's, but I know they're not all dragsters...
ever seen a factory 305 TBI cam? I've seen dowels that had a more aggressive profile.
I think 185hp is very very very very generous.
It took the TBI 350 to beat the 302 Mustangs of the same generation that were pushing 180hp.
Most "new musclecar" guys (and that term is like nails on a chalkboard) are idiots that think every V8 rwd car is automatically faster than any 4 cylinder Japanese car.
Most S12s would have a pretty hard time hanging with anything that actually makes torque.
A factory stock ca18et is supposed to run low 16s, with bolt ons, 14s aren't out of reach.
Mind you, for the same $$ invested, your friend could probably be into the 12s.
And sure, a 1.8T can beat a 5.7 na.
How do you think it would do against a 5.7T? *lol*
like a CA18DETvs5.7lt SS Commodore
Yeah the SR20DET S12 easily beats the VY SS Commodore (250kw GenIII, thats 335hp to you americans), the XR6 Turbo is actually a better opponent, my mates SR20DET gazelle didn't just drive past it like the SS, had to slowly reel it in in the top end (240kw Barra 4L turbo, thats 321hp). When people start to mod the XR6 turbo downunder the import guys will have a few better battles on their hands hehe. The XR6 runs a measly 4-5psi of boost, there are workshop owned cars making 500hp with only bolt ons and with the stock turbo....when the FPV typhoon comes out later this year (FPVs version of the XR6 turbo) it'll have 270kw and 550nm to torque to it's name (362hp and 405ft/lb). The local manufacturers are finally pulling their finger out, no more limp 180kw V8s and the performance sixes are really getting a boost in power. Having said that the SR20DET (and CA18DET to probably) gazelles still have better performance figures than any locally delivered stock cars (that includes the STi WRX if you have a SR20DET in you bay :D)
ever seen a factory 305 TBI cam? I've seen dowels that had a more aggressive profile.

Got that right!! They didn't call it the peanut cam for nothin!
I would say a bone stock in excellent shape with low miles 305 TBI would run 16.5 with a 5 speed. The 305 TPI's would probably run 15.5's (with a 5 speed) or maybe low 15's, and the 90-92 350 TPI's will run solid 14.5's (only came with a slushbox).
Sounds like you are doing well....
Keep it up......Ive seen a few CA18ET's pushing over 300RWHP on the east coast of the US......
Good little engines.....Not too shabby for a SOHC....
wait... so is this guy actually building up a 305? :wtf:
Yup, he is..^^
He is going turbo. it may sound silly but when his car is done it will run really hard. he has 350 tpi heads port and polished and an lt1 cam. (Not Installed Yet).
Well, Round 2 of our race is coming up like next week. ill post details and see if i can get a vid up of our race.;)
*yeeesh*
Heh, hope he's got a lot more mods planned than that ;)
If he wants turbo, get a GN 6 cylinder ... they'll be a lot happier with boost than a 305.
But yeah ... 305s can be built. I've seen more than a few articles where they've done 305 vs 350 build ups, where they basically put the same parts on a 305 as a 350 and keep dynoing them.
The 305 didn't lose much ... just a stock 305 sucks harder than a stock 350. Otherwise there wouldn't have been much sense in building both.
But if you've already got a 305, might as well build that.
Granted 350s are everywhere. You can go out into any expanse of land, spin yourself 30 times, stagger out in any given direction, and you'll trip over one.
Yeah, I'd have to agree on that one. And tell him to NOT by any means put those 350 heads on a stock 305 for several reasons.
1: It will drop the compression from a sickly 8.5:1 even lower (like 7.5:1) because of the bigger combustion chambers
2: The small bores of the 305 will seriously shroud the big valves of the 350 heads, negating any advantage of the 350 heads.
3: The center bolt 305 heads are about the best of all 305 heads, just work them over and spend the money elsewhere.
Actually the 305 responds pretty well to a turbo... :) Turbo's like small bores and big strokes. There's nothing wrong with building a 305, but if you're gonna go through rebuilding it, sometimes it's just better for the long run to go pick up a 350 since they're still pretty cheap and easy to find...
Sorry, it was a typo. his new heads are 305 TPI port and polished. Either way lowering the compression would accomadate him right? Seeing how hes going boost.
Im going to the junkyard tomorrow and hopefully i can find a turbo z31 and get the maf from it. Do i need any kind of adapter to put a regular k&n cone filter on the z31 maf? or can i just go to autozone and buy one for a z31? ;)
Yeah, but the 305's are already low compression. They don't need to be dropped anymore.
I think the old record holder for land speed for a truck (could be broken now but..) Was an s10 with a turbo charged 305 that topped out over 200 mph. It was the precurser to there syclone pickup, which only got the 4.3 turbo motor.
Not sure, but I think Banks whooped it a couple years back with his Dakota with a Cummins turbo diesel in it. He pulled the trailer to the flats with the Dakota, put on the racing gear, and raced it, then pulled the trailer back home! That was freakin awesome...

Yes,
you are right, and he keeps the record with a registered 222 mph!!
Cummins is pushing out somethink over 750 hp and even more torque on it.
Love it nice engines.
