S12 Carbon Fibre Bonnets **Update**
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Jul 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
hey when i get the money i will Buy one for my vg30 (as soon as i fix all my other problems :) )
today i purchased the resin in bulk, along with fibreglass to make the prototype (FJ20 turbo bulged bonnet with vent) I have the cloth lying on the mould and all i gotta do now is laminate it up, unfortunatly i ran outta time today, so tomorrow i will make it.
If it is a success photos will be posted on my cardomain site, and the prototype will be sold, for very very cheap!
By the way, the sides of the bulge have been slightely radiused and the bottom edges have been smoothed into the bonnet lines, therefor making it look one piece, not like the factory 2 piece one.
BE READY FOR PHOTOS VERY VERY SOON!
(one excited S12 driver here)
Hey Shep I think the way you have it on your car-domain site is turbo sic! I'd buy one here in the state if it looked anything like that! I'll keep checking back for info on when they're shipping and how to get my hands on one
the prototype just came outta the mould, i will get pics once it is trimmed and finished off ready for painting.
i need interested ppl to let me know so i can get an idea of how many need to be made.
pics this weekend
I for one am interested! :burnout:
I'm a definate....but you know that already :)
ok guys, the prototype came outta the mould and wasnt as i liked it. The design is alright, but the cloth had some troubles and i need to smoothen some areas where it didnt stick to the mould (for some unknown reason) anyway, the "stock bonnet" and the "raised-center-section bonnets" will not have any difficulties when being made as they are a simple design and there's no where for the cloth to lift........ however the fj turbo bulge'd bonnet might need some more time to get it right. I am trying as hard as i can to get these ready for next weekend, but at this progress the bulged bonnet design will be slower to make untill the mould is sorted out.
sorry turbo bulge fans, might take another week.... :-(
The bonnet with the foam vent on your website is lookin pretty sweet dude, will the sides of the bulge (as in the drivers and passenger) be perfectly vertical like that |-----| ? or slightly sloped like this /-----\ (this is a front view).
I'm keen on that, hopefully should fit over the ca18det.
catcha
the sides are vertical with a radiused wall-to-bonnet join, but in the pics it's not there, it will clear the CA18DET easily. I am building a bonnet with a small raised centre section for my CA18DET conversoin, as i think the FJ bulge is plenty big..
sorry for no pics yet, i just started a new job, kinda been workin flat out.

The bonnet outta fibreglass that didn't quite turn out is on my cardomain site:
www.cardomain.com/memberpage/643562 (down the bottom of the page)
it is quite rough, but with some sanding and some filler, it will be ready for a coat of paint. remember this is a dud, not a good one, so they will be much much better than this one.
hope it gives you some idea of that the turbo bulge looks like.
have a look at my cardomain site again, there are more pics, this time of the bonnet i am making for my car, the one with the slightly raised center section.
its a bonnet off another car, that has been chopped down to suit the S12, took me about 3 hours with an angle grinder and a tape measure to get it right.
anyways have a squiz and tell me what u think
sonovabitch that's good stuff... Soo.... when do you think you'll be readyto start churning them out?
i'll start cherning them out when i get some serious interest from you guys. I am making a bonnet for Dexler and myself, and Hugh, these 2 blokes are the only 2 who are dead set keen on them. I know alot of yous wanna see pics of the finished result, but i aint going to fork out a couple of hunded dollars to make a mould, to then have only 2 ppl interested in them.
So without sounding harsh, who's really interested?
The design that is going to be made is the blue bonnet at the bottom of my cardomain page, the one with the slight rise in the middle. The tanny coloured one is for Dex, thats a one off.
I need to see interest otherwise its not worth me making them, i am set and so is Dex, cause our bonnets will be made within the week, but you other guys need to let me know if you really want one.
Prices are (AUS dollars, ex-factory):
Fibreglass bonnet....................................................$600
Full carbon fibre bonnet (full weight reduction).............$950
Fibreglass bonnet with carbon top (layer for looks)........$750
Fibreglass bonnet ($600) is in undercoat, ready for spray, all others are finished in gloss coat to show off the carbon fibre.

Sorry I'm not up to date with this, but that carbon fiber bonnet is the whole hood itself, rite?
(In Europe and Australia) bonnet = hood
according to the latest rates convertion that's $665 for the carbon hood. How much for shipping? I mite be interested.
it will be a good while but i want one.prolly the whole carbon fiber one.what bout the fj bulge one?oh and how much would it be to ship to zip code 29239
I would want one as well how much to post it to U.S zipcode 08015
P.m. me if you need more of my address
one for full carbon fiber oem mkII please. zip 98166-1139 thanks
Dude I am so down for a carbon fibre....however i don't have the dough atm......so i can't buy one till say christmas time so i can grab up the dough....this is gonna be rad.
i will find out the cost for shipping next week, got alot on ma plate this up coming 5 days, so dont expect much progress on the bonnets untill the following week. There is only one shape being made atm, thats going to be the one with the slightely raised center (bottom light blue bonnet on my cardomain page). As for the FJ bonnets, i will see how Dex's one comes along, if it gives me too much greif, its getting the flick...........sorry FJ owners, but i got limited spare time atm, and developing another mould and prototye aint going to happen for a few weeks.
but yeah, keep the zip codes coming............ shipping works out cheaper for like groups of 4 or 5 bonnets, so get together and organise a place to send them to, then disperse them amungst yourselves, this will save you about AUS$100 in shipping each!

i wanna see the final carbon product before I jump on it. You have me by 70% going for me.
i now have the carbon fibre cloth sitting here next to me. The last 4m of its kind from the supplier. Its enuf to do one bonnet as a prototype, to show all yous. If yours like it, deposits will be taken and i will start production.
i dont really have money for it so how would payments be if i decide to get one of the fj ones if you make them if i cant do that then it will be a while
Hey Sheppo I really want to know whats going on with the drift type hood and when can we see at least a foam design.
I will be keen for a bonnet that has the massive slat vent things init. have you started to make any like that yet?
i am not making the vented bonnets for a while as i am concerntrating on the design with the raised middle section, the bottom one on my cardomain page, nicknamed "stealth" (Neb's idea, heheh). The FJ bonnet is called "FJ turbo bulge" and the one with the drifting vent is called the "D1" bonnet. Hope that makes it easier to describe what bonnet you are after.
The order of production will be:
Stealth
FJ turbo bulge
D1
Payments i am not too keen on, as i aint going to send off a $900 bonnet and only wee say a payment of $100 or so........... whats to say you eva pay me the rest? Not wanting to say anyones like that, just i aint going to send the bonnets untill payment is made, so it might be easier to just save up, or get a cheaper one, such as a fibreglass bonnet with a carbon top layer for looks.
At the end of the day its up to you's. But the main production bonnet will be "Stealth". The other designs will follow if the 1st modle is a success.
Catch yas, today it might be made! Depends on if i finish a bodykit for a mate.
yeah i will probably go for the fiberglass one with the cf layer on top and i am either between the fj bulge or the D1 style hood. will the D1 style be able to fit the fj cause if so i want that.
good luck and hope it's successful. I want a cf vented hood.
Sheppo will the hoods be reinforced on the other side, because I dont think I've heard about reinforcement. I dont want my hood spliting in halve or anything like that, am just wondering??,...........
yes they are re-enforced, so they wont split in half or anything like that.
You will have to run hood pins in the front to help keep the bonnet down at speed as it is so light weight, it will want to lift the faster you go. It only takes 10 minutes to fit the pin kit anyway, so no real drama's.
Will fibreglass be painted upon delivery or will the buyers need to paint it themselves?
Not that I care cause i'm going carbon fibre :P
Damn If i wasn't saving up to go to fontana to see the JGTC and if i made more money i would buy one right now but as of now im broke but in like 4 months if you still have the mold or what ever im buying one deffinalty I want the carbon fiber d1 hood bad.
ok here's the scoop...
Last night i started a CF bonnet. I laminated up a stock CA20E bonnet, the flat type. I havent seen it yet, but will tonight and i will take pics. From what i saw b4 i left, it was lookin sweet!
This is the deal people... If you like what you see, i can make them. If you dont, dont bother asking me to make other insane and outragous designs, as it just wont happen. I have very little spare time as it is, and i aint going to waste it on trying to develop a bonnet that suits everyone's tastes. As its impossible. I will make an FJ20 bonnet, and the stock CA bonnet, thats it... no drift bonnet, no slatted Vented bonnet, nothing.
I do want to spend some of my time and money on my car instead of these farkin bonnets, as they have taked a good 3 months of my time and about $700 straight out of my pocket. So please dont ask for anything, just watch the progress and decide if you like it and if so, and you can afford it, buy one if you like. Sorry to crack the shits, but enquiries dont pay for the development, i do.
So just slow down, watch the progress and see if you like it when the dust and resin fumes settle.

I would like to say thanks for your hard-earned work. Without you, none of us could have achieved this hood (bonnet). Once again thanks.

hmmm.. i likes what i sees!! i assume that once production is in full swing that the price will come down a little yeah??
quick question: does the FJ bonnet have a vent in the front of the buldge?? if not (hang on, this is two quick questions!!) can it be added (like cut out of the buldge) later??
and just one more: is there a hole for the bonnet stick??
the FJ bonnet will be re-designed as the prototype didnt work out. it will be a plain bonnet with the FJ bulge, no vents. But a vent can be added on request, the same as the flat bonnet.
The bonnet in the pics above will be for sale once finished, it will be going for $750 plus postage, as a full bolt-on replacement, water squirters included, and yes they will all have a hole for the "bonnet pole".
I have really gone into bodykit manufacturing for a shop/drift team, so production of the bonnets has been slowed. Dont worry, i havent forgot about them, give me a week or so and the bonnet will be finished. on the side i am delevoping a kit for the S12, but more on that later.

dude ur so cool.
it's $750 i can afford!!
i was thinking of going for the FJ bonnet, but getting the normal one and painting it would be a good way of stripping a few kgs out of the car without being as obvious as my weight-loss program has been so far.
if you want it, you can have it, and if you are going to spray it then i wont gloss coat it, i will let u spray it. It will be finished within a week or so. email me with your details so i can get a quote for postage to your door.
good to see a local wants it!
dude i so want one! how much plus shipping to florida?
man i am in melbourne, so if you want u can find out for yourself. I think about $250-300 (australian dollars) to fly it overseas. thats a guess. Fedex ot DHL are good to work with.
catch yas
i'll give you a hoy in a month or so. i have about $1500 i have to spend on two cars and it's all gotta be done in 3 weeks!! (rego + greenslip + Bluey S3 Diff + springs/swaybars/bushes = lotsa $$).
hey i dunno if you have the new issue of zoom yet, but there's an s12 with a very wide kit on it in there. just curious as to whether you could give us a rough quote on a f/glass front apron/splitter similar to the one on that car to suit a normal front bar.
cheers.
i can make almost anything but its a question to how much labour is involved in developing it, and how much materials are involved in making it including failures and moulds, etc. I have a thread about kits for the S12's, look in there.
