I think I just explained my opinion on the block weight.......As for building Nissan\'s, come back to me when you have your Nissan Scope tech certification.....I admitted that it was just from the feel and you try to slam me? You must be one of those CA Nazi\'s that has a size complex.....I just got done saying that I had a CA hand my Built S13\'s ass to me....LOL...Sorry my opinion offended you.....

-Jeff

i am sorry you have to get offended and show what you have in terms of certification wise.  But it\'s not impressing anyone.  Actuallly for a tech you should have known not to make the assumption of just guessing by feel.  If you are a tech you leave everything to comps/science/paper pen and calculator.
I didn\'t try to slam as i haven\'t tried to slam anyone here.  I was just stating a point which is widely spread on the net and has been repeated here at least 3 or 4 times.  No i would have preferred the fj before the ca but the deal went south.  BTW i am really sorry my fact offended you about the sr being heavier.  I am not here to start an argument, opinions are opinions and unless i hear someone who designed BOTH these engines then they are just that. OPINIONS!

hey while on the subject of sr and ca... whats the crank main journal diameter of the sr??

Joel07Aug 24, 2004, 3:29 pm · #55

SR20DE

Main journal - 2.1636-2.1646
Rod journal - 1.8880-1.8887

Don\'t have the specs for the SR20DET since it wasn\'t sold here, but I\'m pretty sure they\'re the same...

no i only ment \"keep certificates on the wall and facts in here\"

sorry that you think that joel but i have been here for some time and never have i attempted to start an argument.  I just don\'t appriciate ppl who think they know better JUST because they have some sort of certification.

Matt here knows a ton and i don\'t think he ever got any certification from nissan or anything in between, and so with a lot of other member who have helped me and others here, who i really am gratefull for.

OK, so this is a fairly debatable subject, basically AMEN to EUROBOY\'s first post on the first page.

If you don\'t go fiddling around with the bores of the ca18det, the basic factor that its a cast iron block, and SR is an alloy block the ca18det will handle more horsepower, mega-HP SR\'s run a sleeved block.

CA\'s and SR\'s with similar mods make very similar HP figures, the SR just spools the same turbo sooner given its longer stroke.

*** Benefits of an SR is all them yankee\'s make aftermarket parts for them, so it makes bolt on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING possible. but in the end, the SR replaced the CA because it was cheaper to build, Aluminium blocks are cheaper to make (not becoz its lighter, becoz it isn\'t). SR was CHEAPER to produce becoz it has something like 50 less moving parts, or 50 less parts to it. IN THE END the ca18det comes from a background of CA family and it was their final masterpiece in the series, SR has SR16 or SR20, both built at the same time, $$$$ saving led to the SR, years of CA family led to the CA. As nissan were very well off in the late 80\'s early 90\'s they could afford to make cars with a ca18det.

In reality its hard to say one engine is better, nissan came up with the SR which was nearly as good, but made it for less $$$. (oops did i just inflict my opinion *snickers*)

(sorry if any of this has been said)

its all about \"horses for courses\", what you will use your car for and how often you will use it, and most often comes down to a BUDGET factor as to which engine to choose. but if you pick an SR u have to put up with that droning farting exhaust note (sorry Neb)

Now, not to rub anyone up the wrong way, but both these engines are good, but will never live up to the legend of the

FJ20ET  :guns:

King of the Nissan 4cyl turbo motors.  :werd:
(not that an FJ20et is very good in a drifter)

catchas

P.S. just read the first page again, whats this about SR\'s rocker arms being perfectly fine SHeppo? i don\'t care what design they use, they a reknowned for cam follower breakage, and to rev an SR regularly you need to fit Rocker Arm Stoppers. One higher profile case in WA would be ROY\'s S13 (aftermarket flared front guards) from C-red performance, after blowing up 3 motors, he finally fitted aftermarket valve train gear. the ONLY SR to to have a different setup and not run into problem is the GTiR motor. Thankyou  :kicknuts:
RISPEK tho :)

Yeah it\'s true, i think they sound kind of like a light truck haha
Basically what i heard of the SR replacing the CA was that they worked out what they did and didn\'t need from an engine to perform to nissans factory requirements and they used the CA to work that out.  The SR only had what it needed to make nissans cut and therefore save nissan money while still delivering to the public (who i have heard weren\'t overly impressed that the S13 Ks was initially quite down on power compared to the S12 RSX turbo).  As with all factory bits it\'s down to economics.
Good post S12PSI.
S12PSIAug 25, 2004, 2:15 am · #61

Cheers mate, i edited it about 4 times :)

And yeh thats one to think about, considering we didn\'t get them one after the other like a commonwhore (Holden Commodore for foreigners)

You\'d have to be pretty miffed if you were awaiting the Most powerful S12 after owning a 190hp fj20et RS-X and the next car out had less. imagine Holden dropping the GTS from 300kw to 250kw haha, whole bunch of loonies (65% of australia) would be ravin mad. Popularity would take a DENT (as if the BA XR6t and BA GT didn;t do that enough already)

I\'m sure everyone here would agree, but it has happened, particularly in AUSTRALIA and USA/CANADA where the \"fuel crisis\" in america had cars dramatically dropping in power, while in Australia it was \"SUPERCAR SCARE\" that lead to the biggest drop (also fuel was a factor)

Sorry if this is unrelated folks, but its a bit of history relevant to current topic.

Hope someone benefits from these ramblings (EUROBOY)  :honda:

Good post S12PSI.

actually ca was dropped because it was too expensive to maintain and the ca platform was a research program where nissan threw TONS of money, and since going close to bankrupcy they had to ditch a lot of programs....but the ca is a true power house

now the fj is just another category....so no need to talk about that!
Mr.200Aug 25, 2004, 4:27 pm · #63

Yeah, if we want to compare apples and oranges ...

*cough* RB 413 Maxie *cough*

Crusty old Dodge taillights look just as good whether you\'ve got a CA, SR, etc etc etc.

The biggest problem with posts of this variety is you get 99% of uninformed people spouting 99% of the automotive world\'s advertizing endeavors.

Magazine cars, dyno \"shoot outs\" etc etc sell stuff.

... don\'t even get me started on the Internet.

No offense to any of you that really are certified ... but I\'ve had to go into a number of dealerships for friends or family members and educate service techs and managers about some pretty rudimentary problems, Nissan, Honda, GM, Dodge etc. Because it\'s all re and re, no diagnosis.

You have problem a) so you replace part a)

No finding out why part a) broke, whether or not it will break again ... you do what the book says.

The SR was a cost effective replacement for the CA. AFAIK when Renault took over a fair pinch of Nissan\'s debt load, they realized it made no fiscal sense to build the CA.

I do doubt the CA18 is a lopped off RB. The ca18e and ca20e were around before the RB to my knowledge.

The FJ was built for racing. Then the classes changed disallowing turbo motors. So Nissan punched out their 1.5 indy motor and stuffed it into passenger cars. No big surprise it was the first MPI motor available in a passenger car.

A lot of the SRs fame comes from time. The tuner craze hit full stride, and when it did, the cars that became desireable had SRs.

If the tuning craze had hit in the early 90s, everything would have been CA this and CA that. Hell, they would have been putting ca18dets into Hondas in F&F.

This just like the 350 vs 302 Chev vs Ford debates.

There is no answer to \"which motor is better\" questions. In all honesty, in stock trim, a CA or an SR is lunch meat.

As soon as you start tuning, it\'s no longer valid for comparison.

A motor is not just a HP switch. You don\'t just turn it on and pound out a set HP. And you don\'t just turn up the power either. There is a science to it.

Everything that determines power delivery is alterable. Once you\'ve started tuning, the only thing you can ask is \"is MY motor better than YOURS\"

If you can\'t figure out that stock numbers are for impressing peons, odds are you can\'t put a package together, let alone pick a cam.

If you can\'t do that, then someone else is going to do it for you, and they will follow a pre-set pathway. So your motor will be just like a lot of others.

Which becomes \"is the motor I paid for better than the motor you paid for?\"

Which leads to confusion and flame wars on the internet, because the owners of those motors can only rehash the numbers they were told, without ever knowing what it means, or why it happened. And they know they paid through the nose for it, so they won\'t accept anything that would indicate they made the wrong decision. And they constantly reference to \"a friend of mine\" or \"a magazine article\" as reputable sources of information. My friend put coolant in the oil because it was the only cap he knew, and he figured that all fluids would go in one common place. Would he be a good source?

And these SR and CA powered cars are getting eaten alive on the streets here. Some even by hopped up NA KAs.

As for the SR or CA18DET eating any SOHC Nissan motor ... well, the SR and CADET powered S12s are running about the same 1/4 mile times as the ca18et cars. The only people running under 14 second time slips (well one guy who runs 9s *lol*) is an FJ. And those are verified numbers, not just claims. An VG30ETs will last at power levels SR owners dream of.

IMHO there is no answer, none worth knowing.

Buy one, and start undoing what Nissan did at the factory to make the motor a PASSENGER CAR MOTOR.

I\'m not flaming anyone here ... just trying to put a stop to an argument that won\'t go anywhere.

If you want to get into a penis swashbuckling match over who built what or how fast your cousin\'s friend\'s mother\'s cousin\'s illegitimate son\'s car is ... don\'t do it here.

I don\'t care if you\'re Mr. Nissan himself, if you\'re not contributing valid information and trying to stir shit up, posts will be locked an deleted.

I\'d like to think we\'re un-simian enough to be able to actually hold a discussion without lobbing feces.

we still going on about this?

poor banana\'s

some of you should build a bridge and GET OVA IT!

just for information: SR is an alloy block and when u say they \"sleave\" them for high HP applications, they dont add sleaves to the alloy block, they remove the stock iron sleaves and replace them with thicker walled ones. The SR has iron sleaves standard! so do all alloy blocked engines, what you think that alloy blocked engines ran the pistons and steel rings up and down an alloy bore, i\'d like to see that!

I love stirring up ppl :-)

S12 is old and rusty with grandpa style suspension. I reckon id have more fun drifing a billycart than the s12.

I knew i shoulda bought my series 5 rx7 instead.

People that think the CA is worth buying are serious stupid. If i could do it again id buy the 1.5L Hyundai excel engine and make it rwd. More torque!

first off no one is calling you stupid for actually having a ca engine.  So keep those comments with ppl that can accept that kinda language.  If you don\'t like the s12, then go join the s15 club or you too borke to buy one?  Don\'t be a hypocrit!
second s15 with an sr20det?  I think that they are factory cars with factory engines.
The sr20 has been in production longer and was avaiable for more years than the ca18det.  The aftermarket is there.  BUT THEN AGAIN you think since there is aftermarket the motor is great.  Those god damn dx series engine.  They got everything for them.  Screw it i will ditch everything because if there are enough stupid kids to want one a manifacture like hks apexi will most likely produce one part or a lot of them.  You are being like the kid who belives everything he sees at the movies.  Rocker arms no matter how much you protect it was used to save money on research and it\'s a primitive way.
Well i am really to disappoint you but i just shillacked a sr20det powered s13 last night.  OPPPPPSSSSS the ca beat an sr......either god threw an lighting to make me fast or something

HAHA

You guys are all crazy.

Pretty soon i will have two identiacally matched (suspension) Late gen coupes running. One with CAdet and the other with SR.

From the looks of this thread I might just have to start doing streamlined perfomacne upgrades to both just for the sake of settling this argument.

But Is it fair to give away the CA\'s .2 of a litre. Like in turbo and injector and cam sizing? Or should i spec each one for maximum potential.

But as soon as i do that. the OCD kicks in and i have to end up building each motor into a race gas only whore...hmm

Ok, I\'ll streamline the turbos and injectors. But the cams will spec differently for the sake of argument.

And i\'ll give the CA the bennifit of a little nicer PEM by using the microtek on the ca, and a Power FC on the SR.

I\'m surprised more people don\'t compare the FJ20ET to the SR20DET. Same capacity (2L), both are big engines (compared to the dimensions of the CA especially), both have aftermarket parts available (though the FJ ones are getting hard to find & are nowhere near as plentiful as those for the SR now).
