Does anyone know where the wires connect to for the dimmer control?
A little history.......When I got my car it had the stock radio, but the previous owner had all of the wiring harness plugs behind the radio cut off, and the audio wires were all soidered to the contacts on the back of the radio.
Everything worked fine including the dimmer switch.
I went in and cut all that mess out, and installed a new radio, and when I did, the dimmer control quit working......and stil doesn't work some 10 years later. Not that big of a deal....but it's just one of those options that I wish worked.
I went in last night and pulled out the head unit so I could see all the wiring down there.
There is a group of 3 orange wires not going anywhere..... one orange, one orange/black and one orange/blue. Looking at the FSM these control the power antenna which I don't have.
There is another 2 wires grouped together, and coming out of the wiring harness next to the other audio wires.
One is pink, and the other is black.
The pink has 12v when the key is "ON"
The black one is negative
The last pair of wires that don't go anywhere still have the plugs connected, and are right next to the wires that go to the ashtray..
Coming from the wiring harness side one is pink the other is red/white.
The red/white one has 12v when the lights are on.
The other side of that plug has a green/black wire and a green/white wire......and they use to go to the stock radio for illumination.
The dash lights work when this pink wire is grounded.
I think these 2 wires play a role in the dimmer switch somehow....but I can't figure it out!!
So....thats what I have, and trying to look at the wiring diagram in the FSM might as well be in Japanese cause it's not making any sense to me.
If anyone can shed some light please feel free.

How many, and what colour are the wires coming out of the dimmer switch. Knowing this might make it a bit easier...

In fact Keith, I will take my deck out, and check the wires that you described on mine, and let you know where mine go...8)

Hey great.....thanks man! That would be much help!!
There are 3 wires @ the switch.....one lavender, one light blue, and one black....the blue and lavender one's I don't see behind the radio anywhere, so the 3 wires coming from the switch must plug into a hub or something somewhere, then different colors coming out and lead down behind the radio....I'm guessing?

I think one of those hot wires goes to one of two options.
1. The cool 80's talking computer. "Door a-jar" (I wish I had that)
2. The wopping 100w amp

Yeah must go to the optional amp perhaps....which mine doesn't have.....because I got the talking lady option.

The talking lady option is tight! I need to find one of those.

I had a friend that had a '84-'85 Maxima, and the voice in it said the same things as the S12, but the lady had a Japanese accent. I've also heard one in a Maxima with a mans voice. That was kinda scary

Some mk1's had this option in the space next to the ashtray. I think the thing read the estamated gas mileage and miles to empty. I don't really remember. I had the "head unit heater" 100w amp that cooks your deck. Got rid of that with a quickness.

You got it a little wrong......your talking about 2 different options. The thing next to the ashtray was a "drive computer" which displayed fuel milage and such.
The talking voice option is hidden somewhere, and the voice is heard out of the left front speaker, and the toggle switch to turn it off is right above the parking brake on the center console. The warnings she says are....."fuel level low, lights are on, left door is open, right door is open, parking brake is on"......and the only one you can shut off with the toggle is "key is in the ignition"
