What's up guys. I'm new and just wanted to introduce myself. I have a white 85 turbo. I'm located down in San Diego. Are there any other So-Cal peeps on here??

Welcome, there is a few members from Cali that I can remember off the top of my head. (Arro, Radracer S, Keith and RPSport-John)

A notch CA20E car is just a swap candidate in waiting ;)

Ok, I'm almost done the swap.

Because of the server crash alot of my updates were taken out. I really dont feel like retyping all of it so heres the skinny on what i'v had to do to get this engine in my s12.

- Make new engine mounts, moving engine 8" forward
- Custom driveshaft (spline from z31, ujoint from s12, length=1" shorter than V6 s12 drive shaft.
- Custom Steering linkage + lower crossmember 1 1/4"(PS rack pinion is right under the exhaust coming out of the turbo.)
- crossmember  engine mounts had to cut off.
- swap oil pans from VG30E and ET+ add turbo oil return to VG30E pan.(sumps are reversed)
- Custom tranny mount.
- Custom 3" exhaust
- Custom Howe radiator made
- rebuilt front shocks with 85-140 gear oil to support new engine
- rewire s12 wiring harness to accept VG30ET

There was other stuff I'v had to do also because I swapped it into a CA20E shell. I had a V6 parts car to grab alot of the stuff. If you are attempting this swap. YOU MUST START WITH A V6 S12. There are too many things that have to be pulled from that car in order to work. Including you need the bigger brakes, R200 diff, oil pans, wiring harness, some timeing module i found in the car.

Heres a couple pics of my exhaust I just finished building.

Custom Tranny Mount:

Both cars mid swap:

Custom engine mounts:
Passenger sid mount actually had to come forward another 1" or so from that pic. Also the x-member you see there is the z31 modified to fit the s12. I only did it to get acurate engine mount measurements.

As you can see this swap is not easy and will take alot of time and ingenuity. not too much money if you make everything yourself as I have. still about 1500 though including intercooler, radiator and everything.

Damn i typed more than i expected too. Back to working on the car.

sorry to bring up an old thread.

Does anyone have any pictures of this swap..  the links dont work anyore

i need to see how far the firewall and strut tower need bashing to fit a stock manifold 300zx turbo mani on an SE

ArroAug 29, 2008, 1:43 pm · #10

the guy who bought the car from him just started posting, we've hit him up for pics. Look in this week's welcome section.

Old myth... you can't modify the firewall, it's not doable in this situation. It's been hashed over and over, have to relocate the engine forward more, so custom mounts and other shit. The OP of this thread even said himself he doesn't recommend this swap.

Anyways one look at a VG30ET Z in the junkyards and you will see why.

firefoxAug 30, 2008, 12:27 pm · #11

I tried to test fit the manifolds minus the back pipe

the turbo WILL NOT CLEAR the  steering linkage... by like a mile   but the back piping will need about 2-3 inches of firewall bashing

so i've decided to cut a hole in the stock manifold and run piping from that and block the backs off  putting the turbo where the battery normally is

ArroAug 31, 2008, 3:13 am · #12

So basically you are rerouting the crossover path.

It still means you have to deal with the motor mount issue... the VG30ET driver side motor mount is not in the same position as it is on the SE S12 driver side, because the turbocharger is there instead. Whatcha gonna do about that? Just curious.

firefoxSep 1, 2008, 9:12 pm · #13

im going to use 2 passenger side turbo manifolds (the side without the t4 flange)
or im hoping to flip the stock manifolds around if they fit

fliping them around so the exhuast exits are in the front
then run pipin so the turbo is where the battery was
posted image

you could just bolt both maifolds without cutting the passenger side...  but you will run into a nightmare piping setup

10psi with stock turbo injectors and 107 octane airplane fuel

then when it blows i want a fresh block with rods and pistons and upgrade to an hx35 cummins turbo(t4 flanged)
then 18 psi with 800 injectors and a chip

thats been done on here already.

search "remote mount turbo"

its nothing like the swap we are talking about, or that jasterm5 did.

ive seen MC's remote mount..
its not really what i want to do.

ill start a new thread for this once i start on it

firefox upgrade to an hx35 cummins turbo(t4 flanged)

damn right!

told you arro

ArroSep 5, 2008, 12:52 am · #17

Uhhh you're considering that as supportive? He hasn't even completed the swap yet

It's just shit talking until he does it, and drives it -- no, *beats* on it -- for the next six months to a year to see if it goes POP. Even then it's gonna be a laggy motherfucker without a proper 3" turbo back exhaust. And a T4 will need a nice sized external wastegate because they don't make them with internal gates (for good reason).

If anything, the VG has the displacement. Andrew, this isn't the same. This is a 3.0L engine. When I've said a T4 is too big, I meant on most four cylinder engines that lack a fully ported head and wide diameter exhaust (race setups basically). Even then, a T4 will not be as responsive as a T3/T4 hybrid (which is why the hybrids are so popular in the first place).

demonic s12Sep 5, 2008, 1:15 am · #18

its a HX35....

think between a t3 and a t4

t3 is stock on a z

so whats the problem?

200sxkitcarSep 5, 2008, 1:25 am · #19

There IS a completed front-mounted type of turbo setup, JUST as what he was describing on here, I think its mc who has done this.  Hunt around in the V6 section I think it was.  Flipped the manis, had to weld an extra tab on the one, and the turbo sits up front where the battery was.  Thats the way I'd probably do it

ArroSep 5, 2008, 1:33 am · #20

BoostedVG I think is the front mount; I know for certain that MC is the remote mount setup.

Andrew, I wasn't sure if when he said T4 flanged he meant T4 sized. If it's between the two then it's not a bad idea, but he'll still prolly need the exhaust and wastegate support since from the looks of it, it has none of its own:

posted image

Looking at the picture, I'd say it leans a lot more towards T4 sized...

demonic s12Sep 5, 2008, 1:54 am · #21

saying it will be laggy is without knowledge though

the vg out of the s12 has a higher c/r compared to a turbo engine, so lag will be considerably less than a huge blower on a turbo engine

also said

a higher c/r will spin a turbo just a little better than a turbo engine, especially when you consider the low redline on a stock vg, this is a good thing

also to be taken into consideration is manifold volume and runner size and pipe size, these affect the spool of a turbo as well, if a vg can spool a t3 from the factory without an intercooler, a vg can spool a t04e with an intercooler with just minimal lag. it only makes sense.

just ask the Z guys

ArroSep 5, 2008, 2:14 am · #22

Ok it will be laggier. But then that is true, it's what, .5 more compression? What is the VG30E, 9:1?
