My count is 3. The reason for this poast is... What went wrong with yours? all of mine where spun rod barings, same cylender too. All from cold starts.
How many vg30's have you killed?

mines running like a champ even with 205K miles on it and HARD driving
i just purchased my first, with a blown head gasket. 160k miles
does this motor suffer from the same flashing problem in the coolant passages for the #6 cylender i believe
Wow. I haven't seen too many spun bearings on these motors at all. I've seen blown head gaskets and cracked heads, but they're pretty freakin tough motors.
I would say you're in the minority with blowing up three of them...

i thought that was a z32 problem? (granted, its the same block, so its entirely possible it was a VG30 flaw, and it was only noticed mainstream by the z32 cause of the power output)
2 for me.. ohh wait you meant actually broken not beat on the street....lol...my bad dont mind my post...hehehehe
shut up bart!:kicknuts:

sorry couldnt help myself.....
You've killed 3 VG30 motors?!!! How did you do that? I have absolutely shown no mercy to my S12 VG and the only thing that killed mine was that my timing belt let go. Just had some bent valves to deal with. I killed the VG30DETT in my Z32, but that was because the oil seals in one of the turbos blew oil into the intake tract. Oil doesn't compress as well as air, so it kinda blew out a ring in #6. I don't know how you're spinning rod bearings in the SOHC VG30E though.
This was all in my first s12. The car had 160k when I got it from my ex-mother inlaw It wasn't well maintained. after a few months I had a rod nock. She drove fine. I tried to blow her up for a year. Didn't let up on her at all. My friends would say "Damn, you rape the hell out of that motor!" After a year I got a jdm 30k motor so I swaped her. The second motor craped out two years later. same prob. The third (my faverate) craped out that year. Coldest day fo the year. This one didn't last long after spining the bering. After a week the piston was slamming the head, harder and harder with each day (still rapeing it). finaly she blew a head gasket. But she still ran! I have mutch respect for the vg.
My car now has 294,000 miles on its original engine. I've had this car for 3 years now with no problems at all. I've been runing Redline fully senthetic race oil 10w/40 for three years.
I know on my turbo motor I will get a high volume oil pump, and a cold start oil primer for shure!!
Wow, you're running synthetic on a 300k mile motor? Does it burn much? All the higher mileage motors I've tried synthetic in end up burning so much, I put dinosaur oil back in it...

hmm mines the oppisite if i run the real stuff i burn more then when i run synthetic
Same here. If I use dino oil she burns it up. The redline oil is kick ass! It is the same thing as jet engine oil.:) How many of you guys have that lifter knock at cold starts? After using redline I haven't had that problem. It flows like 10w/30, but coats like 10w/40. I also have better oil psi.
i ran synthetic once...like 30 psi oil pressure... and it was full!..blowing blue smoke every time i got on it..i was PISSED (that stuff aint cheap!). so i went back to Valvoline Max-life 10/30. no probs runs around 90psi on the pressure gauge (yea i know theyre goofy like). but yea, i have that horrid cold start-up...but its let up here recently. meh!
Just killed my 2nd tranny the revurse gear blew out again.
Yeah, the tranny's in these cars are kinda weak. I blew out the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros in my last S12 SE. Never seen a reverse gear go though. What the heck were you doing? LOL
My third gear is gonna go within the year. Its grinding like a mother..
the tranny i got from the junkyard has a horriblwe reverse...but all forward gears work GREAT!..i take the loss (of a good reverse, my 1st ranny had awesome reverse, and crappy 2 & 4) for good synchros..
I just picked up a pathfinder with a broken timing belt for free. It bent all the valves in the right head
ill take the manifold if you dont want it..
Well mine has 280k on it and I run 10w-40 syn castrol. She use to run 20w50 syn castrol, previous owner/best friend used it.Then I read some really bad stuff about all syn oils in the xxW-50 weight. I run castrol because that is what has been used in it for years. It doesn't smoke but the cam seals leak. That will be fixed on the next timing belt change.
The tranny crunches in 2nd and 5th. This is because when it was rebearinged at 160k the man that did the job lost some of the syncro parts and used some from a 4cly pickup core. DUMBASS!!!
VG's use different syncros. The clucth was not changed while the tranny was out either!
I am still waiting for the clutch to die, I know, I have been saying this for over a year now, but.... its not dead yet! Then I will rebuild the tranny and post pics of the rebuild.
Just one for me, 2 if you count the fire from the leaking Fuel Injectors. Hee Hee. I think this story is my personal profile in the Coffee Shop. But anyways, VG30 was from my 85 Max which the lost the upper gears in the Automatic Trans 2 years prior. I can't remember the exact milage when the tranny gave out, but I'm almost certain that the engine lasted another 2 years with out oil changes and running at redline on the freeway at close to 85mph 5 days a week before re-enacting the famous AMMCO commercial on the 280N Freeway.
Just another testimony to the Endurance of the VG30E
