I've been considering a 2-tone paint scheme for my daily beater, and just wondered what any of you may feel on the matter of making the color switch just above, or just below, the crease along the S12 body. I call them MkI and MkII style, since stock 2-tones were done above the crease on MkI's like mine and on MkII's like the SE V6's they seem to have been below the crease where the later body trim was placed.
Here's some photo-chop's I made up, thanks to Hugh for his recent pics in the Post a Pic section :-D...it's easier to work with a pic of a white car than my 2-grays.
My notes:
MkI style looks more like what AE86 guys do...not that I'm trying to imitate :-P [rolleyes]
MkII style seems much easier to do, don't have to follow the wheel arches when masking

2-Tone above or below crease? (MkI or MkII style)
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Apr 2005" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
i was thinking about that two tone black and white a while back, but Maco is asking for about $1000, so i guess if imma gonna do that i will try to do it myself. that's just me.
I think the MKII looks better. I don't like the paint going up over the wheel arches, looks kinda funny to me...
I'm thinking my rendition of the MkI style sucks. Here's a car that actually has this paint scheme...

You can see that in real life the fender lip curve is a lot smoother than my example.
Well I have rubstripping down my doors so I will run the twotone from the bottom of that and down...I won't be coloring the wheel rim either, it looks bad IMO.
I have planned a twotone for awhile now, red with silver bottom to match my Primax Euro Platinum wheels.
And today I decided to do the unthinkable and do it with spraycans. Primer and all.
Worst that can happen is I fuuck up and jsut go to Maaco.
I was quite shocked when I saw my car with the two tone LOL i'm flattered you used it CU Zcar*blushes*
I quite like the MK2 style....sharp simple and elegant.

Nice, we need pics :-D
Red or burgundy top with a black or charcoal bottom is another combo I've been toying with. Then there's the ubiquitous (for me) orange I could use, to match my Zcar. I dunno though, I'm about orange'd out...school colors, and I'm more than ready to be outta here...
If I paint this car at all it'll be by myself, probably with a compressor and sprayer though. The equipment is available to me, I'll just have to find a place to do it. Oh, and at least my test of the color scheme should out-ghetto all of you :-D gloss enamel household paint...apparently a circle-track trick to keep paint on the cars.
the second one looks nice....im planning to do black and red 2 tone
Two tone is good fun.
I played around with mine a few weeks before i painted it green.

well i guess this doesnt really count as 2 tone.. more like 3 tone.. but take a look at this white S12.. i really like that paint scheme.. and whenever my car is in the finishing stages that is what color it will be painted.. white up top, black trim, and silver bottem

Yeah I don't like the wheel arches either ...it's a tad faggy methinks.
I say go the second one but with a black stripe an inch above it ...like what TOXIC had but without the black bonnet.
Very Hachiroku I know but it looks sooo phat on the hatches, that's what I'm planning to do if ANYONE EVER SELLS ME A FREAKIN HATCH :wall: ...read the "wanted to buy" ads.
Failing that, the old silver/white with the chunky black stripe is pretty cool as well.
God bless
By the way, TOXIC:
Did you do that two tone job properly or just use rattle cans? Just wondering how you got the line so clean.
anyone here from so. kali has done the 2 tone color..??? if so, where and how much was it
Hum, the extra stripe on Toxic's example does look really sharp. If I go that way I suppose I could always leave the rub strips off at first and see which way I like it.
If my gray/gray car looked as nice as the turbo model next to the "3-tone" car in the other example, I'd probably not bother changing anything :-P
I used a real fine line tape which is made for that kind of stuff, its only a few dollars a roll so its worth it to get a better finish. I used 2 pac paint when i did it not spray cans though...
I voted mark one but then Im a tad biased

Yea from your avatar I gather you have factory paint like mine...except maintained nicely. The more nice examples of that scheme I see, the more I like it too...choices, choices!
BTW thanks everyone for your input and other ideas...it helps to go through this with people that have been looking at (and painting) S12s for a while.
