Well, I was screwing around on ebay today, and saw a RWD SR20DE with ecu, harness, and tranny for sale, and I figured, shoot, lets see if we can run up the price a little, and I figured the motor would be worth $400 easy. Put $400 in, and the reserve price was MET!!!!!! Good god!!!!!

I know it's not a turbo, but still, for $400 with the ecu and harness I think that's a heck of a steal! Best part is, it's within driving distance, so I won't have to pay any crazy frieght prices! Worst part is, it's an automatic... :frown:

But, I still think it's worth $400, I'll find a tranny somewhere.

:evillaug:

Hate to give up on the CA20ET project, but I'm thinking there may just be a high compression N/A SR20 in the works instead...

Man I'm freakin out about this, now I have to figure out how I'm gonna pay for it...

hahahahahahahahaha, I hope it runs...hahahahahahahahaha

???

They give a 30 day start up guarantee. Doesn't matter anyway, I'll tear it down as soon as I get it. No stock junk for me. Thanks for the support though, dude.

Nothing against the SR, and it wasn't persoanl, I just think it is funny that 400 me thte reserve on it. That ECU from Nissan is worth about 900 refurbished CDN. My bet is that the guy really doesn't know the value...

i have a spare rwd sr20det bellhousing sitting in my garage will that one work?

Alex Frostdate not saved · #6

Yes that bellhousing will fit. Joel as long as you have a CA 5-speed this bellhousing will work for you...8)

Mr.200date not saved · #7

heh,

prolly a Honda convert with an S13. Knew he HAD to get an SR.

Just didn't know the "T" was relevant.

Good for you Joel, even NA these motors can make good stink.

Joel07date not saved · #8

Yeah, if I get it I'll need an SR housing. It's actually a JDM importer, I guess they couldn't sell it since it's an auto and a non-turbo. But we'll see how it goes, it's still got a few days on it...

even auto's can be tweaked nicely ;)

salps12date not saved · #10

SR20NA would be an excellent engine in the S12! With the right mods you'll get an easy 90rwkw.

$400USD is about right for a good SR20DE, just convert it to manual and you'll be laughing

Hope all goes well!

Jmac279date not saved · #11

90 kW = 120.6 hp, FYI

honest_jimdate not saved · #12

Dosent the NA SR lump still have the turbo internals? im sure it does it should be able to take quite alot of NA tuning as standard. Get some throttle bodies on it and it will sound very nice!

shanedate not saved · #13

theres one being built here quad tbs high comp shooting for 200 hp

gerrybgdate not saved · #14

If its an auto and you want to convert it to manual, you'll need a flywheel

Joel07date not saved · #15

Yep, there's plenty of stuff I haven't got sorted out yet, but I'm still the high bidder... :evillaug:

I haven't decided if I want to go N/A or Turbo yet, since I'm gonna tear into it anyway. It says the motor comes with 160hp stock (?) so it must already be high compression, that's pretty freakin stout for an N/A stock motor. I'd really like to build an N/A motor though, and I think this would be the one to do it with.

Also, it's got a distributor, which I didn't know the RWD SR20's came with (all the turbo's I've seen are coilpacks). So, sidedraft webers anyone?

NA SR is the same EXCEPT the following
Cam profile
Pistons
Rods
No oil squirters
No coil on plug, uses a dizzy
Different ECU
Smaller injectors
Block is the same but the holes where the turbo oil line goes is blank.

Thats all i can think of right now, the SR20DE can be turbo'd quite successfully. Cos of it's higher compression it makes the same power as a DET at lower boost. It's still quite strong enough to make at least 180kw@rw.
Basically use the turbo injectors, exhaust manifold, turbo, dump etc. Drill and tap the block for the oil, add water lines. Remap ECU to suit. On low boost they are said to be quite sweet cos they have NA response with some turbo boost on top.

I might be out in left field (it wouldn't be the first time), but doesn't the DE have a bit more aggressive cam profile??

i have a ca18det tranny if you need it

Joel07date not saved · #19

Well, thanks for the input guys, 13 hours left and I'm still the high bidder.

I'll probably just use the tranny in the car with an SR housing, but I'll keep you in mind, since doesn't the DET have a little better gear ratios? If I decide to keep it N/A, I'm gonna need some tight ratios.

I just feel kinda dumb after picking on all the ricer wannabe's around here who buy S13's and immediately pull out the perfect-running low mileage KA's out and drop in SR's. But I guess this is a little different. But that's kinda why I'm wanting to keep it N/A, just so I don't look like I'm jumping on the bandwagon. (I know that the SR people on this board are cool, but unfortunately there's a lotta ricers in the area who think the SR is the only motor Nissan ever made worth a crap... )

Mr.200date not saved · #20

bandwagon

hope you win it, I would love to see what kind of a package you can put together for it ...

High comp high winding NA motor in an S12? Yummy.

Really...interesting

Joel07date not saved · #22

Well, I didn't get it. When I put that $400, I was determined to not bid any higher since I don't really need the motor, but it would be a fun toy. The bidding ended up at $405.

So, in one sense I'm kicking myself for not being more aggressive with it, and in the other sense, I'm happy, since now I can get back to the ol' budget beater CA20ET. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for SR's though still, as I would still like to build one just to see what really makes it tick, but I'm also pretty excited about making this little CA into a monster too.

So, I guess it's good and bad, but either way, I didn't get it... :frown:

On the bright side though, that 400 can go towards making the CA20 that much better 8)

Joel07date not saved · #24

Yep that's exactly what I was thinking. I just need to get on these Mitsu rods and see if I can hack them up enough to fit, then I'll have a set of Wiseco's on the way... :evillaug:

Someone hurry up and come out with a tubular CA manifold!!!!

Alex Frostdate not saved · #25

I'll see how much Wiseco's would bee too...Guys we race with are sponsored by them, and by the looks of things I might be able to get stuff through them at Wiseco's cost... If I can get a bunch of sets, and there is demand, I'll see if Wiseco would be willing to cut a great deal to everybody who wanted them!!

Joel07date not saved · #26

Yeah, that would be pretty cool... I am can get em at jobber prices, but that's still going through a couple warehouses before it finally gets to me, I'm sure straight from Wiseco would be a lot cheaper.

Only problem is they don't make pistons that'll fit, the ones I'm gonna use will be modified... :evillaug: Don't want to start cursing, but they're actually made for a Honda B20 with a B16 head...

Thats the great part, you state the dimentions, and they will cut them, with your CR and everything...the guys who I know with the connection have all their pistons custom made by Wiseco...:) ...so basically if this goes the way that it looks right now, we might be able to get pistons with our dimentions made, for pretty much at cost, plus shipping!!

Joel07date not saved · #28

Booooo yah!!!

Definetly check into it! That'll save me some trouble...

Alex Frostdate not saved · #29

I should know by the end of this weekend...8)

Alex Frostdate not saved · #30

Ok I was talking to the sales rep, as well as the team I would be going through, and they get their pistons made in the spring. As of now they are not promissing anything (they are building two new motors) but as long as ours are made at the same time as theirs it looks like this might actually happen...Their RX-1 motor that they are building up is still in the begining pahse so we are good as long as they don't blow it upp too many times. I will keep you guys updated as I know more...
