Well I switched over my wheels from the '85 to the '84 Turbo.
So now I suffer from rallycar syndrome in the front just like with the last car.
So besides springs, I'm also thinking larger tires. These are 50 series 205's on these 16x8" Primax Euro Platinums:

So I think I will go with 205/55-16's, using a set of Falken Azenis RT-215 pro race tires:

Or maybe Kumho's new Ecsta V700 DOT race tire:

which is the updated version of their popular competition pro line, Victoracer V700

But probably the Azenis will win out, I've seen both up close, and the Azenis feels like the tar they stick int he cracks in roads (very very gummy!).
That is, unless you guys think I should go with Kumho's other new tire, the Ecsta V710:

(hahah um noooo too extreme lol)

Switched over my wheels
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Apr 2005" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
ya the azenis rt's are the way to go.. whats the treadlife on those
If your going for pure traction I used to have a set of Pirelli p-zero asymmetrico on my old 84 ca20e and they stuck to the road like paint, incredible traction, awful treadlife, I burned all the treads off in a little under a year. Oh yeah they are really expensive too.
Kumho Ecsta V700, Victoracer V700 and V710 are all competition tires, unless you're made of cash you don't want to buy them as street tires. They probably wouldn't last 5k miles. A set of race tires may last an autocrosser a year or two of event WEEKENDS. Azenis, on the other hand, are a tire you can get away with on the street. I've owned Victoracers and Azenis, and you can tell the difference between a real race tire and the Azenis. I wholeheartedly recommend the Azenis though, even for autocross...especially if your car fits into an STS class. They're also a blast on the street. If you have the $$$ the V700/710s are great race tires. In general though Hoosiers are faster.
Since it was asked, Azenis I think have a treadwear of 200 (mine did anyway) and Victoracers are about 50, but you can't directly compare treadwear ratings, they're different among each company...more of a "suggestion". Azenis probably wear quicker than most other's 200 rated tires...
Check out www.vulcantire.com, www.onlinetires.com and Discount Tire Direct for Falken tires. Probably Kumhos too...dunno, never bought any Kumhos :-P always Falkens for me.
Falken ST115
Haha, I've got a bunch of old Victoracer V700's that we ran on the circle track car. We were one of the first ones to utilize these since the rules just said DOT tires. Pretty soon everyone was running Kumho's, and replacing them about every 2 races (and they were only 25 lap races). But they're sticky like crazy! Wouldn't recommend them for the street though, plus they're a pain to put on the rim since the sidewall is SUPER stiff...

Yah those look pretty good to me..
Yup. What CU Zcar said is right on. I've run Azenis in STS class, and I've run Victoracer V700's as well. Night and day difference. The Victoracer's are MUCH stickier than the Azenis. However the Azenis will last more than a month on the street. LOL I liked the Azenis a lot for what they were though.
I think I am gonna have to get a second set of wheels then for some Ecsta V700's, and stick some phatty Azenis RT's on my Euro Platinums.
ahhh... Jason where's the money gonna come from for all this?
The Azenis are under 100 a piece, so I buy two a month starting in November, and then put them on once I get all four.
The Ecsta V700's, if I even go that route, I won't need until the summertime when sports car club racing actually picks up in interest. It's pretty seasonal. That's assuming I don;t just run with the Azenis.
Anyways I'm not even going there until I do suspension, and considering that there's no bolt-on adjustables, and no bolt-on coilovers, I'm so far stuck with lowering springs and non-adjustable but decent struts/shocks (and decent doesn't equate with racetrack in my book).
So I have that to tackle first. Not a money issue. It's more an availability problem.
I have a friend who became a driving instructor with NASA over the summer, and his recommendation is always for new people to not worry about making their cars faster before getting on the track. He did the first half of his track events on a bone stock Miata on Azenis (even Miatas are pretty floppy stock) and says the experience was very valuable. The faster you make a car, the more it covers up your mistakes and the less able your instructor is to tell you how to improve. Then they sign you off to run solo, and the wrecks begin...or you hit a figurative wall and don't get faster for a much longer time.
That said, an S12 with Azenis, lowering springs, and shocks would be plenty to go to a HPDE -high performance driving event- with, it would probably make an excellent beginner's car ("fast enough to cover mistakes" are cars like C5's and E36 and E46 M3's). I'm assuming you aren't just jumping into actual racing?
PS- if you hang around the right rich people you can probably find a source of cheap partially-used Kumhos, Hoosiers and other assorted race tires. Real race teams chuck a tire that's halfway done in favor of fresh rubber.
I wish my suspension setup would let my tyres live a little longer hehe. Although i guess that getting 6 months our of a pair of Potenza S01s was ok considering my sometimes shoddy wheel aligment etc. I have Yoko Advan A405 (i think) on the back and they have lasted 7 months but are going to be drift tyres this weekend so that'll be it for them (they have gone over the wear markers on the inside anyways). Got Federals on the front which don't feel near as good as Potenzas but might last longer, who knows. I'm a bit stingy with the tyre thing since drift isn't really about times if it feels ok and is cheap i'll go with it. Not very technical i know...
