Hey you Aussie guys I see Feral Errol of datrats is moving and he's selling his original JDM ca18det coupe + an IRS aus spec s12 for spares, (just remembered he sold all the iRS off this spare car) for $4500. Now I know the s13 ca18det engines are much better, but not a bad price for an original ca18det s12. He's repainted the car and done some other stuff to it.

Yah the only difference between the S12 DET, and the S13 DET is the fact that the S13 DET has an IC...I wish I lived closer to Aus!

Not true, the S12 DET is a NICS motor rather than it's stronger and ECCS controlled younger brother. The differences in power and torque are huge and i have heard it's more similar to the CA18ET in strength too but thats not confirmed.

Really, because I read that the late 88 S12's were built along side the S13 with the S13 CA18DET. It was a situation sorta like the MKI, and MKII transition in 86, only this time they ran out of engines to put into chassis', however there were only a few chassis's left Nissan opted to put the DET in rahter than ordering just a few CA18ET's. From what it said they were able to fit most stuff, but not the IC for some reason. This same article also said that this only happened in Japan, and that only a few left the factory with the DET. The chassis code reads as being either an August, or September built model in the 88 model year...
Ok, looks like that article is most likely wrong, seeing as how the Nissan brochuse contradicts it. (I tend to believe Nissan more). Unless is it possible, that some of the ECCS CADET's were possibly put into the RS-X in late 88, and that Nissan actually ran out of the other DET's that they were previously putting in??
The ca18det in the s12 has a different intake system to the s13. It has a different cast aluminium intake manifold and crossover pipe to go to the turbo.
Definitely made not to have the s13 IC system.
The NICS engine control system, (ECU, coil pack, etc is different), different to the later ECCS sytem, (as in shite I'm afraid to say by all reports, same system was put into early R31 skyline RB20det cars, and it was shite in them also, this is as per reports of people who have owned them, and end up swapping in the later silver top R32 RB20det's with the later ECCS system)). I've seen one ca18det original s12, and a couple of R31 NICS, and the electronics intake etc, is definitely earlier technology than the ECCS system, and definitely purpose built for these cars. And the nics and eccs motors are obviously different in those areas.
As a collector an original s12 ca18det would be okay, but your better off with a transplanted s13 ca18det for power play!
