okay, so why dont people make an Aluminum Hood?
I mean, it's probably easier than CF and cheaper too. it's just a little bit heavier and maybe not as strong as CF, but it also won't shatter in a car accident.
so what do you guys think. am I a psycho for wanting an aluminum hood instead of CF?
Aluminum vs Carbon Fibre

I think the main draw back is getting paint to stick to it...you generally need special paint...but imagine this...Aluminum hood, anodized black...now that would be hella cool!!!
yea...with aluminum you can just anodize it..
prolly costly...
but when aluminum oxidizes it's okay..it doesn't corrode like steel or iron. it actually acts like paint..so you can even just have it exposed! cause only the top layer will oxidize(this isn't me bullshitting..it's chemistry)
Alu is nice and light, was lifting the bonnet on my mates Z32 the other day and i was like hey it's light as, he's like yeah it's alu w00t.
Yeah I'm not a fan of carbon fibre bonnets.
When you crash into stuff, they generally don't break ...because they're carbon fibre. They flex and then they unflex and they have been known to shoot through the front of the car during this process and through the cabin ...bad luck if your head's in the way. I'd always go for aluminium or fibreglass, aluminium will crumple and fibreglass will just shatter, and hell they're both cheaper.
God bless
Hmmm... I've never really thought of that! I know there's quite a few newer cars that are using aluminum in the body panels for weight savings. I would guess the main drawback would be the cost. Anodized black aluminum... Yum.... :lick:
Unless you're mass producing, wouldn't it be harder to make an aluminum hood? Carbon fiber and fiberglass are much easier to work with when making and kinds of curves or bends.
Yeah, that's true, to really do it, you'd have to be able to stamp the metal, and that would get real expensive. I guess a good enough body man could probably make one with a brake and an english wheel, but it'd probably be so much work it'd be easier to do a fiberglass hood...
I prefer carbon fiber... Just because, alot of people could make a decent aluminum hood with some basic tools. CF needs a mold and the expierience. It is lighter and a hell of alot cooler in the end.

Hoods are supposed to have hooks to prevent that from happening I guess they don't put them on CF hoods?
the hood latch?
those are like screwed into the fibreglass skeleton underneath...not very strong and wouldn't be supprised if the fibreglass there broke in an accident.
