i have an 84 s12 and it has the old thick rubbery folded shift boot. i was wondering if the later model s12s have the newer kinds of shift boots that i see in most cars today... i want to find a boot that will fit, but not look like i just threw a cheap fat baggy 'universal' boot over it...

shift boot
Yes, the 87-88 SE V6 models and I think the Turbos have a leather shift boot. I actually changed mine out for a universal-fit one that matched my shift knob, but when I put it on I cut 4 slits in the bottom lip of the boot and secured it under the four bolts that secure the plate that's right under the boot. It came out pretty good:

does anybody know if the boot from an 84 300zx is the same? will it bolt right in?
while we're at it... is there anything off it at all (cosmetic, performance or just neat-o) that will bolt right in? I have zero familiarity with that gen. Did it talk too?
ya know CJAE, i was wondering the same thing. i have that little button in the middle of my console by the e-brake. hrmmmm?? icon_confused.gif

yes, your 200sx should talk...
BEHOLD THE WORD FROM THE HOLY FACTORY OWNERS MANUAL!!!!
"To operate the woice warning system, push the voice warning switch (little button by the e-brake) to the ON position. Each voice warning is sounded to warn the driver of the following conditions..."
"RIGHT DOOR IS OPEN"
will sound when the right door is open and the vehicle is moving over 5 MPH (10 km/h)
"LEFT DOOR IS OPEN"
will sound when the left door is open and the vehicle is moving over 5 MPH (10 km/h)
"PARKING BRAKE IS ON"
will sound when the vehicle is moving over 5 MPH (10km/h) if the parking brakes is applied before the vehicle is in motion yet not released. However, if the parking brake is appiled while the vehicle is in motion the voice warning will not sound.
"FUEL LEVEL IS LOW"
will sound when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the fuel in the fuel tank drops below, approximately 2-1/2 US gal (2-1/8 Imp gal, 9.5L). The warning will be repeated 2 or 3 times and then stop.
If you do not catch the voice the first time, push the voice warning switch to the REPEAT position again, and the warning will be repeated.
"KEY IS IN THE IGNITION"
will sound when the ignition key is left in the ignition switch (ACC, OFF, LOCK positions only) and the driver's door is opened.
"LIGHTS ARE ON"
will sound whent he light switch is ON and the driver's door is opened and the igntion switch is not in the ON position.
Hows that for ya???? icon_biggrin.gif

not that you can really see it, but that shift boot is out of a Civic. Mine was worn right down, and was actually more white than black with a few holes.
I grabbed it at the pick n pull. I'm pretty sure most boots will fit.
