After a remachining of the head, I put the head back on, then the intake. I now know that the intake and head should be attached together, then installed on the block. there is a 1 inch 45 degree pipe that goes from the exhaust manifold to the intake, around the back. when separating the head from the intake, I had to use a pipe wrench to undo the 2 inch bolt on the pipe. so, long story short, the head went on, then the intake. this pipe is impossible to reconnect, because it is in the back. What is it? what does it do? My car ides really rough when it is cold, but after warmed up, it is fine. I can't get over 4000 rpm either. icon_sad.gif Are these symptoms connected with this pipe? is it EGR? help me please. I know i have to remove the head and reconnect it, but it is -20C outside. friggin cold!!

any words of wisdom can help...except anything from confuscious.

The intake pipe your talking about goes around the passenger's side of the head correct? If this is so, then I may be able to help ya.

the 4k problem is a bad main coil. Both coils fire up till 4k then the secondary drops out, if your main coil, coil wires or power transistor is bad...your car will not be able to rev over 4k while under load.

Yeah, It goes around the passenger's side, behind the head, into the top right hand side of the header. on the intake side, it goes into a thing full of carbon ( i opened up my spare intake ). wtf is this and can you please help me. thanks for the advice on the coils! I'm gonna try that this weekend. good thing I kept the coils from my parts car before I salvaged it.

I say plug it ... sounds like EGR/Charcoal cannister. I've never in my life seen a charcoal cannister that was actually working.

If it is around the back of the head, it is the EGR feed tube and it might cause problems being disconnected. Check all of the hoses in the intake path to make sure none of them are leaking.

I talked to a friend who is the head mechanic at the nissan dealership here (always good to have those!! ), and he said that it is in fact the EGR feed tube. it will not affect performance at all. all the EGR does is reduce the amount of smog in the air be Recirculating some of the Exhaust Gas back into the intake, to reduce the amount of CO into the air. He said My car is running too rich when cold, thus making it chug chug chug...

so i need to check my engine temp sensor, O2 sensor, and my MAF.

I swapped the Coils out (had a shop test the ones I put in) and I still cannot get my rev's over 4000rpms!!! can anyone please help?!?!

Just FYI, my EGR is plugged and my car passed CALIFORNIA emissions like this. Sure, it wouldn't have passed the "visual" inspection, but the tech didn't care. So do think twice about plugging that EGR. Keep the hardware lying around just in case.

EDIT: DON'T think twice. Small but vital mistake up there =)

Just FYI right back at you, Nobody said anything about plugging the EGR, until you did. and just what the hell do you mean [EDIT: DON'T think twice. Small but vital mistake up there =)]? what do you mean by that? is that a canadian reference? are you saying I'm stupid? I am damn PROUD to be canadian. If you want to settle this, maybe I should just start bombing your house and call it the "war on Drugs". does that sound familiar. let's try to remember why we are on this website - Nissan s12's and all related media - not bashing one another's home. Thank You.

wolfe, calm down! Nobody's insulting your home! What he meant was that in the upper part of his post ("up there"), he typed, "do think twice about unplugging the EGR", when he meant to say, "don't think twice about unplugging the EGR", because his is unplugged and he passed some fo the strictes emissions tests in the world (California) with the EGR plugged. He typed thye EDIT: line later when he noticed the mistake.

If anyone here is going to rag on Canadians, I'll do it. icon_cool.gif I'm from Buffalo, NY, so I grew up hurling good-natured insults across the river and receiving them back. (I'm speaking figuratively, the Niagara River is actually much to wide to yell across or throw things. icon_lol.gif )
Our morning radio guys would play pranks on their morning radio guys and vice versa. You know, that sort of good-natured ribbing. Then every summer we'd have the Friendship Festival on both sides of the border to celebrate each other. It's all good. As a matter of fact, I'm sitting in an office in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a Canadian and an Australian right now.
Seriously, though, ask Dan, Mr. 200, or any of our many (MANY!) Canadian members, they'll tell you. Everybody's in it together here, and the chances are actually quite slim that someone will deliberately insult you in a post.

Actually wolfeman, Mr.200 mentioned the EGR before I did. But nevertheless, I didn't mean to insult you. I honestly don't know what bad connotations the acronym "EGR" has associated with it, but I apologize anyway. Moving on... you may want to check the ignition timing as well. My car ran a whole lot better after I fixed mine. More specific to your 4000 rpm, you may have bad transistors, bad wiring harnesses, or bad ignition coil grounds. Those are all things that you should check with a multimeter. Keep us posted on what happens.

coil packs, get a new dizzy cap and rotor on the inside. A great improvement.
