I have searched around and am wondering why I don't see post's about converting the ET to DET. Considering they are the same block I would think this would be the easiest choice. And the price of a DET (CA18) is dirt cheap. Has anyone done this or attemted this and ran into problems and thats why no one talks about it? I think 180hp in my little S12 would be very nice icon_biggrin.gif

CA18ET to CA18DET???
A ton of guys here are working on getting CA18DET's in there cars. Not sure what kind of problems they might run into. As far as converting the ET to DET by swapping heads it could be done but is a lot of trouble for no real gains in that the ET bottom end is not as beefy as the DET's. Best bet is for sure a whole engine swap.

what kind of power increase are we looking at with the DOHC?

The CA18DET is rated 170 hp stock. Versus the 120 hp stock of the US spec CA18ET.

The CA18DET has:
MORE boost
Bigger turbo
Intercooler
The CA18ET has:
LOWER boost
smaler turbo
NO intercooler
There is the major extra power gain.

Yeah you are right Zman it does have all those things. But the CA18DET is proven to be a bit stronger. In no way am i disrespecting the CA18ET as that is what I have now and I plan on continuing to mod it. Both are great engines and I wouldn't mind having a CA18DET but i don't really need it since my engine is still in great running order.

Here is a interresting thread about the CA18DET.

Everyone has been dogging me for thinking that the CA18ET would be a promising project. But I am willing to show them. because in my head, any turbo motor had potential; for one it has a low CR so more boost is just a turn of a knob away, and the fact that it's non-intercooled just means that an IC means more boost amd boost means power. Also if you aren't weary about smog a nice intale and exaust would serve well. add a clutch and some sticky tires and you have yourself a true contender. Just my 2 cents.

The one and only problem is how far can you take the ET internals? The DET can be taken to aproximatly 300hp and since the internals are stronger in the DET the ET can't be taken to 300hp, maybe to 250hp...who knows!!!
Both ET that I have are verry good.I have driven my car without oil every now and then and I have abused it verry much and the engine could take it.I am verry impressed with the CA family and it's performance/durability. The one and only problem I have ever had with the actual engine where those xxxxxxxxxx manifold bolts.Fixing those bolts and with stronger internals I see no reason why the 1,8 8v engine shouldn't be able to push over 300hp.
Another thing with the ET that I love is it's simplisity.Swaping it to an DET will make everything much more complicated. The fewer parts the fewer things that can brake.
This is funny that we talk about figures like that.
I have been here almost since this club started and I remember in the begining we talked about 150hp and MANYBE 200hp. We have learned a lot. And for my self this summer I have learned much about the ET and the S12 and it's hidden potetial.
Just trust your S12 and take care of her and she'll show you true pleasure

if you're looking for 180hp, the et will get you there with some mods. there are quite a few guys already pushing that number on this board. if you're looking for much higher than that, then the det may be worth considering (or an et rebuild).
I KNOW that the ET has been taken over 250hp many times without internal mods, and even up to 300hp. The DET has been taken to 400, I PERSONALLY know a guy who had 400hp in his DET with EVERY INTERNAL PART left as stock, ONLY balanced to better withstand higher revs.

I'm a lover of overkill.
I would rather have parts that can take 400hp in a 250hp car then riding on the edge.
Personly I have never taken the ET to far. My opinion is that it seems that the engine is strong. I have abused it and it took it. I have 2 engines one with 186411miles and one with 124274miles. Both engine are stil good exept a certain bolt to the exaust mani. So there is much left to explore with the ET.
Taking an engine to 300hp dosn't say anything about the engine. How long can it take the abouse of 300hp is more interesting.
I know that maybe people have combined the ET with the DET but where are they?Isn't there any member here that have done this swap?

CARTEST is a funny little program to play with, but it can in no way know the differences in the behavior of each car. It can only judge the peak power @ certain rpm and peak tq @ certain rpm. Some turbo's etc act TOTALLY different and that all affects the final results in acceleration.
I've learned NOT to trust anyone's "should be around bla bla hp"..c'mon ppl, dyno the cars...it's really not that expensive, and THEN state your power ratings.
And personally, I'd like to see a normal road car with only 300hp do 0-100km/h in less than 4secs... icon_wink.gif
