How hot do you guys think the intake pipe on the CA18ET gets near the throttle body? I'm asking because I don't have a welder for welding a bung for my bov this spring and was looking into using JB Weld instead. It says it is good to 500 degress F. That seems like it would be enough for the intake pipe, any other opinions on this?

intake pipe temp (jb weld)
it won't get to 500F but i'd be wary of depending only on JB weld to hold that in... i'd think it'd only be a matter of time before it popped off under boost. then you'd need a good way to plug it or a tow.
just get it zapped at a local weld shop. prolly cost you $10. look in the yellow pages for listings.

just get a bun and take ot to a muffler shop, make sure the area is ready for welding and show them what you need, they will either do it right then or have you come back in a bit if they are busy...

I did some testing on JB weld on aluminum and stainless steel. While it will survive at high temps, its strength drops big time. I don't have the data right here, but it survice 1800-2200psi shear at room temp, but dropped down to 50-150psi at 400 deg F. We also tested it in a 15psi liquid pressure vessel application at room temp and at 35 deg F. It leaked big time. Now if the pressure is around 5psi, it worked just fine.
I would agree with the others about getting it welded.
Thanks
Ron

Cool, just thought i would get a second opinion on that. Appreciate the replies. Definetly will get it welded when the time comes.

Heh ... I'll go against the grain here.
All of my bungs on the intake pipe/BOV are held on with Qwik Weld, a JB variant.
Like you, at the time I didn't have access to a welder, so I just used the 2 part putty to hold it on "for now". It's been there for a year ... so dunno.gif

In rereading the whole forum thread, he wanted to hold mount a bung on the intake pipe near the throttle body. Realisitically I don't think that it could get all that hot, and thats probably why yours work fine. At 2000 psi shear, assuming a reasonable size bung, you probably have close to 1/2" surface area, thus it would take 1000lbs to pull it out. Now at 200 deg F elevated temp, maybe it drops down to 500lbs to pull it out, still quite a bit of safety factor.
As far as pressure, at 15psi you will get leaks. However as you are not containing steam, or nasty process gases, a small leak is probably no big deal. We were running 15psi steam, and a small leak is a real safety concern. Thats one of the reasons we stayed with a specialized insanely expensive epoxy ($35/4oz tube with a 3 month shelf life), as the products volume never justified building a robotic tig welding fixture.
I'd still say to go with welding, as its cheap, and you never have to worry about it. With epoxies, improper surface prep, mix, or curing conditions can really mess them up.

ya it will cause you alot less worry to just get it welded on
