I just bought an 87 200sx turbo. I'm not new to turbos as I also own a volvo 940 turbo which I've got running quick enough to beat out a stripped turbo CRX, fox body 5.0 with slicks, and quite a few other "sports cars".
Anyway, my "new" nissan is making quite a loud hissing noise, as if i had a large boost leak or open exhaust. I has a K&N cone filter. i found the rectangular EGR thing was missing one of the 1/2" size hoses, so i blocked off all the lines going to it to disable the thing. I havent driven it again yet as its on the hoist getting major suspension/brake work done. could this device have caused the leaking sound/lack of power? I also noticed the turbo to throttlebody pipe was rusting around where it connects to the turbo, but i cant tell if its leaking or not. any help would be greatly appreciated.

is this normal?
Hey, weclome! Good ol' Canadian-only 1987 Turbo cars. icon_smile.gif
I'd say that it's a boost leak, potentially from the rubber clamp that attaches the air outlet pipe to the turbo, or possibly a broken pop off valve. The lack of power will be from the lack of boost plus the excess amount of fuel being injected. Get that intercooler installed asap, as the new piping will probably cure this leak.

now when you accelerated the car did you get alot of hesitation cause if you didnt then its not a boost leak
