Sorry to bother you fine poeple but I need some help. I am purchasing a non running CA. It may be something as little as a battery. If its not though I just need to know some of the magor problems you guys have w/ your cars. I have all sorts or spare VG parts but I doubt any fill swap over but if they might let me know (alt, p/s pump, etc...). I will be picking up the car here very shortly. If I can get it running instead of towing/hauling that would be great. Just give me anything I should check/due. thanx alot

That may be true, but better said:

CA Help now!!! (quick like a bunny)
Simple things not in any order.
fuel pump
spark plug wires on wrong (if it was a failed diy tuneup)
ignition relay / anti-theft
timing belt (of course then the valve train may be fubar)
starter solenoid wiring at the starter
Good luck
Ron

When I went to pick up mine, it was a "no-start"
All that was wrong with it was the coolant temp sensor (the one that's inline on the top rad hose) wiring was broken. If I held it together by hand it would start.
but yeah,
spark
fuel
if you've got em, it should start.

check the basics - fuel, spark, compression test, MAF, all connectors, cap+rotor, vacuum lines, Timing belt - Mine was off by one tooth, and it wouldn't start! and all your sensors. I have to clean my cap about every 3 months, or it won't even start. Good Luck!!

beware of the not so simple things. it could really prove to be a money pit if you need to get it running again. can the previous owner clue you into why it's not running?
good point sschung. when I bought my second s12, the owner told me it was running when he parked it, but running VERY rough. turns out the timing belt was broken, and 6/8 of the valves were bent. (cha-ching cah-ching) icon_eek.gif icon_sad.gif It might be something simple, and it could be something major. I find these engines to be quite complicated(vacuum lines, sensors, computerised...), but when you get them running well, they are absolutely die hard powerplants.
Cheers

Wolfman, how do you clean your cap? If it needs cleaning at 3 month intervals, I wonder if you might have some contaminent in the cleaner, or there is some type of microscopic crack. Mine went for about 300,000 but the last 50,000 it was plaqued with a tiny crack that occasionally caused no starts. I have had some supposed cleaners that left contaminents as well.
Thanks
Ron

I use "micro electronics cleaner" from Canadian Tire (canadiantire.ca). I use it when building computers. just spray it on, wipe with CLEAN cloth, spray again, and evaporates quickly with no residue. I don't thinkit's leaving a residue or, contaminants, because all the computer systems I've serviced and sold work great. I thought about a crack in the cap, but I had a shop test it for leaks (like an alternator test) and it is only about 9 months old. good point though!
