this is prob already covered (sorry) but i got an offer of a ca18det out of a mates s13 for $300aud just dosnt have a turbo, but it does have some nice internals... looking at the workshop book it looks like a piece of piss to do for extra grunt.... for an aussie to answer... nsw rta probs? req engineer cert??

so now whats the biggest prob? this is for a few months away if i do it cause im doin my interior and stuff first...

also $$$ value on the change over? what turbo would be nice....?

I'm guessing you want to do the engine swap right, and not just swap internals?

Now, with your 84, you've likely got the crappy old transmission, vs the 86.5 +. While the ca18det will likely bolt up to it, it will not handle any serious power.

One way or another, you'll at the very least need an uprated clutch.

You can't go wrong with a T28 ... it'll bolt right up to the manifold, and give you serious boost.

You'll need to run the ca18det ECU (or go to standalone) and complete engine harness.

if you have the coin, I would definatly suggest a Link Engine Management system. They are based in new zealand and have some very impressive hardware. They are expensive, but have very comparable features to Motec (which they admitted to reverse engineering from) for about half the price. I recently talked to a few reps from Link and they were top notch. They let me play around with their software front end for a bit and it is much easier than some other's (AEM for instance). Its not as user-friendly as Motec, but it is definatly close. If it was my car and I had the $$ I would go with a motec, but if I didn't have the extra $ I would chose link without a doubt.

Just my 2 cents if you are looking into EMS.

yeh thanks, ecu was a thought, didnt think the normal ecu would be anything fantastic.... and plus, its off the road while doin the engine so why not go the whole slog if i can raise the $$ (the ultimate bubble burster) lol thanks ill look into that ecu. but what about the tranny? what tranny would be better?

A stock tranny from a s13 CA18det would do for most power levels. Does you bud whos selling the motor have a tranny laying around?

nah he doesnt have a tranny but shouldnt be too hard to find...
