Got my FJ

Got my NA FJ20 on the weekend. I have been hunting around for one of these for ages and finally found one that was not too far away at the right price. Its in a DR30 Skyline frontcut.

Had to spend 5 hours in the front of a triton witha a busted knee to pick it up but hopefully it will be worth it.

There was a lot of info on the old forum about FJ conversions but its not possible to get to this anymore. (Dan do you have admin passwords for the database?)

Any help or advise on the conversion from CA20 to FJ20 will be very much appreciated.

if its the low rocker cover na motor then it "might" just clear the standard bonnet. ive done the ca18et to fj20e swap before, so let me know what you need to know.

Thanks Vegie,

I have a FJ20 bonnet in the shed so clearance should be OK.

Here is a couple of obvious questions. I will probably have more later. At the moment I am busy with some other projects so I might not get around to this conversion till December.

- Can I use the CA20 engine mount? Do I need custom mounts or do I use the Skylines?
- Will the gearbox bolt up the existing mount points on my car (84 manual hatch)?
- Do I have to change the lenght of the drive shaft?
- The Skyline has a support bracket from the right hand side of the rocket cover to the strut tower. I have not seen this on any S12 FJ engine bay pictures? Is it required?
- The ECU has a Green led. Is this for diagnostics? I can't find to much on the web about this. How do you put the ECU in diagnostic mode?
- Any pictures of the engine bay layout for the S12 FJ20 would be very usefull. I will try and make mine the same but expect I will be limited by the wiring harness.

Thanks again for the help.

poss12Thanks Vegie,

problem one solved!!!

poss12- Can I use the CA20 engine mount? Do I need custom mounts or do I use the Skylines?.

the fj20 mounts for the s12 are different from the dr30. the dr30 ones will cause the sump to sit on the crossmember. i can make templates off mine so you can get some fabricated if you like(the engine side brackets that is), but you will need to use the square rubber type mount rather than the CA round type.

poss12- Will the gearbox bolt up the existing mount points on my car (84 manual hatch)?.

it fits exactly the same. no worries there

poss12- Do I have to change the lenght of the drive shaft?.

mine fitted without any mods at all.

poss12- The Skyline has a support bracket from the right hand side of the rocket cover to the strut tower. I have not seen this on any S12 FJ engine bay pictures? Is it required?.

it is not needed, i threw mine away...

poss12- The ECU has a Green led. Is this for diagnostics? I can't find to much on the web about this. How do you put the ECU in diagnostic mode?.

i wondered the same thing, but i havent ever found any diagnostic info for the fj computers, and i wonder if that is actually what the led is for.

i have some pics of the engine bay, but i suspect my wiring will be not much use to you as the loom is from a fj20e NZ new s12, and they have a completely different ignition system to yours. it shouldnt be too hard to sort out though. are you using a dr30 engine loom?

Thanks for the reply Vegie.

So I am down to two main issue at this stage engine mounts and wiring harness.

Any help you can give me on the engine mount would be great. I think there was something
on the old board about using VL Commodore mounts with metal spacers?
I cant remember who the post was from.

The harness is my big worry at the moment. Everything on the DR is ass about to the S12.

Here is a pic of the layout.

The coil is on the drivers side and the wiring for the coil etc appears to be mixed in with the wiring
for the headlights and everything else. I guess the coil needs to be on this side to reach the dizzy
but do I have to pull the DR30 harness apart to get the wires I want?
Should I just get a aftermarket fuel and ignition system and make up my own wiring or mod the spare
CA20 harness I have in the shed?

Did you convert your NA FJ and what was your host car?

Thanks heaps.

Spent about 2 hours today going through old posts on FJ.com. Found more info there about using the VL Commodore engine mounts.

Also found a bit of info about wiring and aftermarket ECU's. Enough to get me started at least.

Jaycar make a ECU you put together yourself for a reasonable price as well as a hand held controller. They had a book featured in Fast Fours magazine a few months back. Has anyone tried this EMS out?
