what is the smog \"laws\" in califorina? i mean, any kind of engine swap, will a complete engine swap pass smog check? i was never into swapping. sorry for this newbi question.  one of my friend have a \'86 sr5 that i might want to get it and put a 4age into.

from what i know and heard, you can swap engines in cars as long as the engine is newer than the car. so say u have a 86 S12 if you swapped in a S13 sr20, you should be cool. i would check californias dmv site. oh and a cat converter is always needed when you smog and your check engine light cannot be on or else its a fail instantly. and your exhaust cant be louder than 87 decibels from 50 feet away. thats what the dude at the muffler shop told me. i hate emissions :wall:

i thought that they would have a problem with a jdm engine in a usdm car down in cally. If that was true, the 4age should be alright since toyota put them in like everything in the states.

i guess i\'ll ask around L.A. people. i have a friend down there.

take the car to a domestic shop, they wont be able to tell the difference at all. i am pretty sure you can swap a jdm motor into a usdm car, japans emission are stricter that calis. ask hillkill. he has a ca18det, i am not sure if he ever got it smogged. but he was trying. i have seen several dealerships selling s13\'s with sr in them. they smog before they sell, so it has to be legit.

just register it in ky.  no smog testing here.

its not as simple as new motor in an older car...

if your car never came with a turbo option good luck smoging a turbo\'d motor in it. A lot of people have problems with the sr20det in the 240sx\'s because the 240sx was never afford turbo\'d in the states. also I know a lot of JDM motors dont come with EGR valves which are a must for smog. I think it wouldnt be to hard to put a ka into a s12 and smog it but in california you\'d have to take it to a smog ref to have the swap inspected, I know a lot of the DSM guys get away with putting the older 6bolt motor in their 2nd gen eclipse\'s because its a huge hassle to tell the difference with out tearing down the motor. I had a thread up about this a while ago try searching for it.

why does anyone have to know that its not the stock motor??   just tell them (the smogger)  that its origional and that you havent messed with it.  chances are that they dont know jack about nissan engines/models/makes

not necasarrily, guy i knew (roomate that passed away this last month), his old man owned a dealership.  he was telling me that if i ever had any probs w/s12 getting it smogged, he could hook me up w/a \'no questions asked\' smog for $150.  they DO have ways around getting cars smogged.  was telling me that if the car doesnt or wont pass...the \'make\' it pass.  get my drift?

*edit*

that was my 500th posting!  woot woot! heh

also, fortunetly for me, the county i register in (sierra) only has a one time smog law.  you smog it to bring it into the county and thats it..so nice :D
