How Much Boost Can A Stock Ca18det Handle?

I know people post up this question, but i cannot find the answer. So how much boost can a bone stock CA18DET motor handle before cracking cylinders, melting pistons etc. Thanks

If you wanna make sure your ca18det is reliable you need to keep in mind ca18det's are older motors from 89-91 I believe. A lot have higher miles so you might wanna replace things like the piston rings and bearings for reliability factors.

If you are asking how much you should boost on a ca18det without freshing it up I would run somewhere between 200-250 rwhp if your motor has decent compression. Thats also on the safe side. If you have forged pistons 300 rwhp shouldn't be too hard for a ca18det to do. Too bad forged pistons for the 18det are 800 bucks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sweatingbullets.gif).

Of course these are just opinions from what I have read from a lot of different forums and websites and doing a lot of research.

Thanks man but that really don't answer my question. I'm wanting to know how many pounds of boost can a stock CA18DET motor hold. Like my Civic's cylinder walls cracked after 25 #'s of boost and thats with stock sleeves.

Sinces the CA18DET motor has a cast iron bottom end i figure it could hold about the same or a little more boost.

Does anyone else get what this guy means?

There isn't a specific number for pounds of boost a motor can hold. Every turbo is different.

A t25 at 15 psi is gonna be a lot different than a t3/t4 at 15 psi.

First, 25 psi on your stock civic sleeves..... no wonder they cracked. You can boost as high as u want, on a stock block, it just comes down to how long u want it to last and obviously u found out.

Second, Your looking more for a hp number, than psi, A bigger turbo will compress alot more air than a small one, and feed it into your engine. So asking how much psi a motor can handle is pointless without telling us what turbo you intend to use.

Third, With a good tune and ems, 300 whp, 350 whp, maybe more perhaps, depending on the engines condition. After 350 whp i would have the block sent to a machine shop for a freshening and install some forged internals.

The block may be iron, but that doesnt mean you can abuse it, or neglect to tune it correctly, an improperly set up kit with a crap tune, will end any engines life quickly.

LOL well i didn't mean to boost that high on my Civic motor, the vaccum line that goes between the turbo and the wastegate some how got knocked off so the wastegate never knew when to dump the extra boost. Thats how my cylinders cracked. But i was tuned to 18#'s of boost with a t3 t4e turbo, also i had forged internals.

Just saying i put a t3 t4 on my CA motor and boost it to 20 #'s on stock internals what will go first the ring lan's on the piston? And also saying if i put forged internals with stock sleeves, with the same t3 t4 turbo, could i boost to 20 #'s(with a very good tune of course) would the sleeves crack.

I not trying to make 500 or 600hp i'm just asking a qusetion. I mean 250 to 350hp is what i'm looking for, because this is going to be my daily driver. And if you guys are getting that around 14 #'s of boost than thats kOoL. That just tells me to stay around that area of boost levels.

Really hope that clears it up a little bit for ya'll!!!

I think my last post pretty much summed it up for you. Please dont ask for anything more specific than what i said. No one can tell you a set number, Stock engines can even go boom, so it all depends on the engine, how you maintain it and how hard you are on it.

300 whp should be fine, but who knows, your engine could let go at 250, thats the game we play. If it was me, i would feel comfortable with 300 whp on a totally stock well maintained engine, but thats just me. Some will push it higher, some will want lower. But for reliabilty purposes, on my daily driven street car, 300 hp would be quite fine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

i still dont think this guy gets it. on the inside of a motor, all it knows is cylinder pressure, and heat. 15lbs of boost on a t25g produces a shitload of heat. a t3/t4 15lbs of boost might be right in its efficiency range. t3/t4's come in various sizes, so just dont go over 300whp. boost pressure is irrelevant.

I do think i get it. If i go on a Honda forum and ask the same question for a B18c GSR motor everyone will tell you don't matter what size turbo you go with don't put no more than 10 to 12PSI on a stock motor because after 12psi the ring lan's on the piston break off. And the stock sleeves crack around 25+ psi. So my question is not a dum ass question.

So if i go by what ya'll are saying (boost pressure is irrelevant) that bull crap. The way you guys sound you might as well say it's ok to put 40#'s of boost on a stock motor with a t70 turbo ( as long as it's in efficiency range) and try to get 700hp its ok! Yeah it might for one pull on the dyno then BOOM!! there goes your motor.

The inside of a motor only knows cylinder pressure!!! Yes true but theres only so much pressure the pistons and cylinder walls will take before something blows out or cracks.

I'll just stick to asking questions to people who tunes cars and builts motors for a living and knows the correct way to answer questions like that.

Thanks for your time people.

Seriously, go away. Dont ask questions here. Your a fucking idiot. And obviosuly your honda forums are full of idiots also. Go hang out with them.

look its all in the turbo you can be at 10 psi on a t2 and be at 10 psi on a t4 and the t4 will make more power. if im not wrong its been a min for me.

and to answer your question it will take between 0-17 psi depending on the tune and turbo

NamelessJan 18, 2007, 8:04 am · #13

He doesnt understand, let him get mis informed by the "honda forums".

rageJan 18, 2007, 11:37 am · #14

tell us the a/r, trim, and compressor wheel type on your t3/t4

Thanks yhave8 for questioning my answer.

rage i think its .60 a/r and .48 trim or something like that. Its a small t3 t4.

Now for you other shit heads FUCK YOU!! Now how hard was that to answer? huh? Maybe your the fucking idiot, you retarded.
