when i fianlly do my ca18det swap im gonna go with an aftermarket manifold/turbo setup with an external wastegate....the car is gonna be set up for drifting and occasional drag racing

what would be ba ideal size turbo for roughly 300-350whp on stock internals for drifting and occasional drag racing?

asparagusAug 20, 2007, 5:12 am · #2

semi-cheap and very, very good turbo, ball bearing t28 from 96+ s14 or s15 SR

It can handle 300, I'm not completely sure about 350+. Perhaps a GT2871 will do you good since you're hungering for 300+

ok well thats def an option...id like to have an externally gated turbo but if i can get power like that and save some money that works for me

So, did you end up getting this turbo?

To be honest, stock CA bottom end, 300HP, anything bigger than a T28...
the results wont be pretty.

misterrickOct 15, 2007, 5:18 am · #9

will the t28 bolt up to the stock manifold?

OzchuckOct 23, 2007, 2:10 am · #10

Yes, a T28 will bolt up, but it doesnt come with a nipple for the boost signal to the actuator, so you have to cut your existing vacuum lines to get a signal, not a big deal.

Also you have to rotate the compressor housing to clear crossmember and stuff. also an easy thing, just loosen the bolts and tap with rubber mallet.

misterrickOct 23, 2007, 4:19 am · #11

but its still an internal wastegate?

yes

has anyone tryed an rb20 turbo?

RedneckNov 16, 2007, 11:37 pm · #14

I can't remember if rb20 turbos are t2 or t3 flanged. Either way I don't think they flow all that much air.

TurboNotchNov 17, 2007, 1:36 am · #15

i was told that their t3's with a smaller exahust side. my friends rb20 spools about as fast as my ca.

gerrybgNov 18, 2007, 1:17 am · #16

late s14 and s15 turbos are the go. The oil and water lines had to be changed on mine when I put it on my redtop SR. I got them with the turbo so that wasn't a problem. Great turbos nice quick spool and much better power tahn the T25G I had on there previously.

To get the best power out of them of course you need bigger injctors, (I've got 550's in mine, but 450-480cc will get you close) and a Z32 turbo AFM and an ECU retune to match.

Realisticly this will get you to 260rwhp, (pushing 340hp at the flywheel).

If you want more than this you are starting to head towards the need for stronger internals and the 2871 turbo.Wihtout stronger internals you can have fun till it blows!!

JulieNov 18, 2007, 6:25 am · #17

should build the engine with a higher n/a output, THEN add a turbo, this way u can run a smaller turbo that will spool faster and the engine will have to rely less on turbo power... it will be more like a performance boost then the engines primary power producer

T-3 the rb20 turbo kinda sucks

Rb25det turbo is there "cheap upgrade"

Yep what he said s14/15 t28 If you got big money and want the hp levels of the 2871 I wouldn't unless your just looking for a good bolt to stock mani upgrade for way to musch money.
I had one on my sr was not to happy with it "For the money"
I would go new mani junk the t2 flange go t3 and stay with standard bearing at that point you can get a turbo that will support 500whp for $600 and a mani that will flow much better for higher hp levels and also spool up the turbo much faster.

The best turbo depends on what you want to get out of your setup(DRAG, DRIFT,AUTO-X or DD) then how much you want to spend.,..,.,its all about compromises

Whats with reviving old threads today lol.

Yes the 18det t25 is internally gated.

t34

using a t3flange with t28 exhaust size housing AR 55 along with a t 4 comp housing. External wategate a must.roller bearing

genuine turbotechnics/garret not an ebay jobby

I used one and saw full boost at 2800 (ie 32psi)

mounted as a top mount obviously

ArroFeb 12, 2010, 4:15 am · #28

32 psi @ 2800 rpms YIKES  that's awesome-quick spool

sideways_s12Feb 12, 2010, 5:59 am · #29

I want quick spool like that...

ArroFeb 12, 2010, 6:03 am · #30

It's running the right exhaust, intercooler not too big, and a rather expensive BB turbo. But 32 PSI isn't just a bit more. I bet he has a solid longblock to support it.

Yes your rite. im not a fan of these 4" deep intercoolers on DETS Go for a slim intercooler with an inlet and exits parellel and on opposites. then go for the shortest pipework possable  with even bore pipes all the way along  as the same as the intercooler ports. Then you need an external wastegate. This gives faster more stable spool up with no spikes or boost tail off. . Choose a wategate spring that is at least 75% off your max boost level. Ie if you want to run 20psi go for a 15psi(1 barish) internal wastegate spring and then use a controller from there. a 2 3/4" bore single silencer exhaust system is good for 275hp above that onwards go for a 3". I used a cheappy top mount t3 manifold from ebay. It was good but split a few times until i put a solid mount going from a gearbox bellhousing bolt to the turbo downpipe/exhaust frontpipe.
It spooled to 32psi a couple of times before i dismantled the car.it wasnt fuelling correctly to do that all the time and would probably of blown up. Most of the time before that is ran 24psi which it also reached full boost at the same point. Its spool was so fast that whatever boost you wanted would make no difference to the peak boost rpm lol
It was the same turbo that s13eater on s12oc used to hit 32psi on his 300hp+ CA18ET
sideways_s12Feb 18, 2010, 7:42 am · #32

That's an awesome set-up to get that amount of boost so quickly....
