Noise From Axels/driveshaft/diff

Well, let me start by saying ive never had a FR layout car before this car, so i may just be hearing something thats normal, but i thought i'd ask.

I can go wot to coasting just fine, but if i try to hold the gas down just a little to maintain a speed, something from the rear region of the car makes a moderate pitch hum. I'm wondering if its either the diff or if its something to do with an axel or the driveshaft not being balanced.

I have that. most old RWD jap car have that, my old suzuki jimny have that. not sure if it's normal or not, but I think it's your diff. I just accept it as it is, and hope nothing get broken (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) or I turn up the radio so I didn't hear any noise. no noise = no problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (I know it's stupid, but yeah...)

heh, k, good to know its not something that major, also, what type of oil does our diff call for, would I be ok using this http://www.worldsbestoil.ca/extreme-pressu...-ep-75w-140.php

I'm thinking maybe if its the diff, some new oil after 19 years and 200k miles might be a good idea.

I just need to go through everything in this car and flush it out =P

yep it's the diff. You get this from two things running it low on oil and over heating the ring/pinion causing both to deform. Once you get the whine it only gets worse.

Another way is when you weld your diff and don't flush out all the welding spatter good enough it casues the same thing.

So yeah your diff is low on oil or the oil is just completely broken down not really doing anything.

You can get that really thick Lucas oil. My buddy did it on his welded diff and it got rid of the whine for 2-3 weeks. It's only preventative though... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

heh. does the S13 ka24 diff bolt up?? cause I might end up just doing that when i get the 400 dollar 240 I may be getting.

no, not without different halfshafts and different center driveshaft(s).

I changed my differential oil, and it made no improvement in term of sounds. it still whines.

also, how would I know if its an R180 or an R200
I wanna know that so i know if I can just swap the internals out for the S13 open to clutch type LSD internals, cause if i can do that, i'd be happy. If not, I gotta find an R200 case somewhere, also, im planning on having a driveshaft custom made and using the S13 tranny out of my donor 240.

ok, how do I tell whether I have an r200 or an r180 though, 1988 Hatch XE with a CA20E and an Auto tranny. I dont know crap about the drivetrain on these cars, just stuff about the engines.

asparagusSep 7, 2007, 1:05 am · #11

you have an r180

hurray...lol thanks for the info though asparagus, as much as I didnt want to hear it =(

Haha, np. ca20 cars had 180's, turbos have 200 with 4.11 ratio and SE v6's have 200 with 3.90 ratio(i think)

how possible is it to swap internals from an R200 into an R180 case, OR, how rare/expensive would an R200 be if i needed one.

Can't. R200 is physically a bigger differential all around. You will need an R200 differential w/ the corresponding center tail driveshaft and the two outer halfshafts to fit a R200 diff into a R180'd car.

yeah...I think ill just be going the welded route, unfortunately. I cant find an R200 anywhere. let alone the halfshafts and other shit.

welding the current diff you have won't get rid of the noise (if that's what you meant?) Find another R180 and weld it. Flush it out with cheap motor oil then throw in some Valvoline 80wt. diff oil. Then flush that after 100-200 miles.

For the R200, try to find a Turbo or SE at the yard and pray all the parts you need are on it. SE is rare but more plentiful than the Turbo'd s12s....

NONE of those around here, the ONLY s12 here is an 84 XE hatch thats the same color as my 88 xe hatch. it sucks, i live too far from the bigger cities.

and I was looking for drift-able diffs, but since I cant find an r200, ill have to weld my R180, I can deal with the noise in the long run.
