I'm getting the 1985 Nissan 200sx hatch back (GrandPrix - I wish )on May 6th. So it's not to far along here. Anyhow, I need to know just a few things before getting into the car.
First of all, how to I upgrade the rear end to an posi rear or does the car already have it?
What is the biggest turbo an 200sx can handle that would bolt on. I have welding experence. So modifying isn't a problem.
Also, how much can the clutch and drivetrain hold for power. I would love to get into the 200hp range. Then it would be faster then my Monte. I use the Virtual Engine Calculator to get desktop figures. Dyno Simulation Software Down load it there. It's pretty cool.
Also, the car has sat the last 3yrs. She only has 44k on her. I know to drain all the fluids but what else should I look for that is a common problem with these cars?
Where are the cars codes located at so I can check to see what engine, rear end, well basic options for the car. It's loaded that's all I really know.
If you guys know me from introducing myself a few days ago. I have an 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe with 79k on her. My baby and going to be in 2 worlds. The ricer and motorhead clubs, lol.
I don't care. I love turbos and the sounds of v8's. But the gas milage is killing me now with the gas so high. So it's time to get a smaller engine but put out just as much power and have 1000 pounds less to push down the street or track.
I have a drag strip here locally that I go two ateast 2 times a month and do the Grudge runs at the end of the night. So I will post from the time I bought the car the 1/4 times and with every little upgrade. Also take videos for everyone.
I am being honest, I am very excited to get this light pocket rocket flying like I have gotten my Monte going. But I think this car will be so much easier to play with.
Sorry for the long winded post. I just have a lot of questions about the car.
Thanks for any help any one can give me!
O, my 2nd car when I was in 12th grade was an 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z that was all stock with 175 hp (130 kW) and 175 ft·lbf (237 N·m) with 12 psi of boost. The lowest time I ever got here was in the low 15's. So I'm really hoping this S12 will give me the same awesome feeling driving it like that Shelby did.
Really, what do I have to do to get the car running better numbers then my old Shelby?
Thanks again!

I'm getting the 1985 Nissan 200sx hatch back (GrandPrix - I wish )on May 6th. So it's not to far along here. Anyhow, I need to know just a few things before getting into the car.Depends on if it has the R200 or R180 diff, and then finding a company that produced a LSD for that housing. Kaaz or Cusco, maybe. If not, you could weld the diff.
First of all, how to I upgrade the rear end to an posi rear or does the car already have it?
What is the biggest turbo an 200sx can handle that would bolt on. I have welding experence. So modifying isn't a problem. There aren't really any "bolt-on" turbos for S12. If you have the 2.0L, that will pretty much spell death for your motor IMO. If you can manage to get a good block rebuild, then I suppose a small turbo and low levels of boost could be reasonable.
The 1.8L turbo is already handling about as much boost as it possibly can. Those turbos tend to go out somewhat frequently, though.
The V6 version might be able to handle a little bit more, but once again, low boost.
Quite frankly, Nissan engineering in the 80's that made it over to the US really sucked. I'm talking some of the worst cars of the decade.
Also, how much can the clutch and drivetrain hold for power. I would love to get into the 200hp range. Then it would be faster then my Monte. I use the Virtual Engine Calculator to get desktop figures. Dyno Simulation Software Down load it there. It's pretty cool.Look up the spline counts... I think this transmission works with S13 motors? If that's the case, I don't see any reason why an Exedy clutch won't work. Basic one should be fine. Look it up just to be safe.
Also, the car has sat the last 3yrs. She only has 44k on her. I know to drain all the fluids but what else should I look for that is a common problem with these cars?Rust, of course. Check the common areas, drip areas and battery tray. Fuel that sits for a long time can be corrosive as well. It may be worth it to repair or replace your fuel tank and lines.
Where are the cars codes located at so I can check to see what engine, rear end, well basic options for the car. It's loaded that's all I really know.Wasn't ever really a set system back then. Just XE and SE. Just have to visually check it out to know what you have. 2.0L or 1.8LT. Open diff or LSD. Solid rear axle or IRS. Manual or power accesories. Etc.
I am being honest, I am very excited to get this light pocket rocket flying like I have gotten my Monte going. But I think this car will be so much easier to play with. There are lighter cars out there. I honestly love S12's for the challenge of the build, and the looks of the chassis. This is definitley one of the more difficult cars out there to modify. I hope you're not too used to bolt-ons.
Don't get discouraged, though. If you can come up with some solutions to the many problems S12 owners face, then you will definitley be welcome and possibly revered in this community. So get to work and see what you can do! Welcome.
I'll have to go next door and look every thing over and write it down and let you guys know what shes got. I'll take pictures too of my 44k garage find. It's just cover in dirt, lol. 5yrs it's sat.
But I'll let you guys know. After reading over this forums info I sorta know now what to look for.
Thanks guys!
I've been looking everywhere for replacement parts and performance parts for the S12.. Where do I go to look over this stuff?
I have an 1.8 turbo engine in the car the CA18ET, 5-Speed Manual transmission.
So how do we by parts to make an posi rear too?
Or do we get them from newer Nissans?
Any help would be great. I'd like to start ordering this stuff.
I picked the 200sx up Saturday. Replace a bunch of stuff. I have spark and the engine turns over. Now I just have no gas. I took the old gas out and put more in. Since I wasn't getting gas I took the hose off the filter then just took the whole filter out. Here there is no fuel pressure. The fuel pump doesn't work.
I took the top plate off to find my negative wire isn't connected.
The same wire in this image that I looked all over the net for how the wiring goes on these fuel pumps. This is the closest I have gotten.
What are the other 4 wires??
I would like to get this wire in place to see if the pump work before buying a new one. I am going to buy a new one once my Classic car gets sold. I'm short on cash for now and this is supposed to be my Daily Driver, lol. Don't like driving my car that's for sale.
I'm going to check to see if it's getting power tomorrow. But I tried to take the bolts off the top of the fuel filter today snd they are rusted to the point they won't come free.
Should I just make new holes and just break the heads off?
I don't know, I've never been through this before. I've always worked on carbs. I have a lot of plans with this car. I'm stumped at one that I've seen is only a 20 minute job on some sites. wow
I went to get parts and a guy wanted to swap me for his Eagle Talon, lol. These must be great cars, can't wait to drive mine!
Any help with this fuel pump would be great! Thanks!
just like the topic says. i have a few replies for motor mounts and driveshaft, but they are from a dohc. will they work for the mk1 swap??
no they are not.
rear section of the 240 driveshaft has 4 varients.
s13 abs
s13 non abs
s14 abs
s14 non abs
then the front has 4 variations.
s13 auto
s13 manual
s14 auto
s14 manual
then you have the jdm front which use u-joints instead of rubber guibo.
There will be mods involved if u pursue in getting one.
ahh my head hurts.
glad to see you post rad how you been?
so any clue as to wich one i need to look for? duuh the year/model my engine came out of!! srry dumb question.
Got it going last night!!
I'm very happy man right now!
It was the ground that comes off the neg. battery. It was broken off. The only reason I knew it was there was because I wanted to change the battery terminals.
I seen part of a clip of metal sticking to the side of the terminal after I took the bolt out. So was like.. hmmm I had to look for whatever wire that was supposed to be there. Of course here it's a chassis ground.
So I decided to put everything back together to see if the pump would kick on. So that took some time. But will be much easier to replace it when the time comes now because I redid that whole top of the fuel pump since everything was rusted badly.
I took the S12 out last night for a little cruising. Today I had a bunch of other things I wanted to get done on the car since I finally got fuel into the car!
First thing was to get the boost to stay on longer!
