I still stand on my belief that the FJ20 was not the father of the CA and SR, but was the predecessor of the KA24 as it shares sooo many more similarities than the others... but all of this still leads me to wonder what other KA parts will work? bearings meby?

I was poking around more on FJ20.org and found out alittle bit of information...
darn, i cant find the post but on FJ20.com and Ratsuns forums... apparently you can use KA24E/DE rings with the FJ20... it was something about the KA and FJ using 15mm rings while most other motors use oddball combination(i cant remember exactly) not really sure but said they could be used on the FJ20, which is good cause ill bet that KA Chromolly rings aren't hard to come by

we do know that L16/18 bearings work, but as far as i can tell, weren't offered in the US along with the FJ... I'm going to try and look into this, but in the meantime, can a local send me an upper and lower rod bearing and a main bearing from a KA? its ok if its a bad one, just want to compare... I actually don't think that KA bearings really work, but i think its worth a shot...

Jeffwins24 said "it would be cool if I could pull a KA crank and use it in my KA..." if it weren't for the difference in stroke, I'd say it might be possible...

he also says

jeffwins24and isn't the S12 gas tank plastic?
jeffwins24sooooo.... imagine if nissan ever made a V8... 6.0 FTW
jeffwins24
I have never driven a SR but one of my buddy's has a CA18 and he says the engine is kinda suicidal.
jeffwins24
yeah, losing someone does suck...

but... in a sense... think about it... no more pain... no more worries, no more shit from anybody, no more getting old or seeing people die/ hurt them selfs, no more life period... you just go...okay, yeah people miss you but they'll get over it dry.gif
jeffwins24oh... it's just a SR20.

he says a bunch of stuff so id watch out

do you have the FJ20E or the ET

id just keep the FJ20ET mostly how it is except for some normal upgrades IMO
it seems to have alot of horses stock
jeffwins24Oct 17, 2008, 8:53 pm · #5

did you read his build thread? I said it would be cool...

key word is IF.......... it WOULD BE COOL IF you could fit a KA crank on a FJ

and it took 7 pages of replies to find out it was you're spark plug wires that were bad on you're car? remember the won't revv past 4k during load. issue.

David BOct 17, 2008, 8:55 pm · #6

actually a brand new duralast had failed, kinda hard to tell what goes wrong when something out of the box stops working, i was also 16 years old, which im still only 17, and that was one of my first threads? lol
regardless the problem got solved, no matter how many replies it took
you go on talking about all this technical shit when i dont see any actual sense at all

i already Pmed you about how i think that you posted some stupid stuff in that thread about losing someone etc, and you didnt respond
still waiting on that btw
plus my plug wires have nothing to do with engine internals, if you dont know too much about etc. why talk like you do

added on, it was more of a joke, but still getting a point across

anyways, back on subject
would a KA crank, make the engine more responsive or what? could someone explain?

S-NationS12Oct 17, 2008, 8:57 pm · #7

I'm curious as far as the FJ and KA parts...some guy told me hes trying to get connections for FJ engines for us..We'll see...
But ionno bout the KA crank in the FJ...if it works great, but...

Speaking of which, Ive heard the FJ head flows REAL well...anyone ever done an NA build..not here, but anywhere? curious to read about it

you told me not to respond back in you're pm... so i didn't respond back...

KA crank would make the FJ stroked to a FJ24 but I think the pistons would hit the head.. thats why i said it would be cool if.

and if the crank works that means the rods would work too.

plus my plug wires have nothing to do with engine internals, if you dont know too much about etc. why talk like you do
Because I'm actually learning to become a mechanic a certified ASE technician so I study this shit for class. and I never said you're plug wires had anything to do with engine internals.

AARGH JEFF seriously man you're just guessing... it's like when people used to think the Sun revolved around the earth, because they didn't understand astronomy. No, it wouldn't make an FJ24. The rod ratios and whatnot of the two engines are entirely different for one thing. You make these kinds of assumptions... I bet you think the CA20 and the SR20 probably have similar rods lengths. Displacement isn't just made by height, it's made by the cylinder *width* as well. Not just stroke, but *bore*.

There already is an FJ24, it's a carbaurated 2.4L. The difference between the FJ20ET and the FJ24 is the "E" first off (the electronic fuel injection) and the fact that the FJ20ET is underbored to 2.0 liters.

Look, piston interchangablity is one thing... I have heard that Suzuki Grand Vitara pistons actually fit in a certain B series Honda engine and lower the compression. How's that for an example. But rods and cranks are another thing entirely.

And to set the record straight, the FJ was not the predecessor to the KA, L-series and the Z-series engines were.

http://www.datrats.com.au/KA24%20ENGINES.htm

Let's try to keep it on topic tho. The crank isn't going to fit. The FJ wasn't designed off of any previous engine. The FJ20E and FJ20ET were scaled-down versions of the carb'd FJ24 which was strictly a NISMO release ONLY for their Group B rally car (the 240RS). And the DR30 and S12 were the last cars to use anything FJ based. None of the later engines were derived from the FJ architecture. The CA18DET bottom end was a revision on the original CA engines, and the head was a new design. The RB borrows from that head design. The SR20 series is also a new design, and the KA24DE uses some of those same innovations.

Stupid question - Do you think you can order FJ parts through a Nissan Dealer?   I can almost garuntee not since everyone says parts availability is hard...
OH, and any answers on that NA FJ?  IF it exists?  I'm bored at work and would make great reading...If I dont read that I'll go back to reading how mega squirt works, lol

i said plug wires have nothing to do with engine internals meaning that

you shouldnt bring my simple issue up, that stopped me from daily driving, (when i had my liscense, and i was worried and shit)

to a dream thread of a simple Fj24et
and your way far down the road from your technition job pay attention more in class
jeffwins24KA crank would make the FJ stroked to a FJ24

if arro is right, i might just have to start a thread for these quotes

any other parts compatible with the fj/ka?
ArroOct 17, 2008, 9:35 pm · #12

The basic answer is "no". The KA's bottom end is based off of the Z-series engine, and those are totally different bearing journal diameter from the FJ. The L-series six (L24/26/28/28ET) has the same bearing journals as the FJ. That I pulled off of FJ20.com a few years back.

Again, I say keep it on subject.

BTW, you have to understand that with every engine revision there are often differences in the snout of the crankshaft, and sometimes the back end bolt pattern. I've seen it before on other cars. What I would want to see is an  FJ crank alongside a KA crank, although I'd bet money on that the cranks are incompatible.

lol the subject is over, there is no room to talk about the topic? am i wrong lol?

ArroOct 17, 2008, 9:43 pm · #14

Well these are two entirely different engines. It's not that I'm saying "no the cranks won't work, everyone shut up now", it's that these engines have very dissimilar engineering. I suppose to me, this would be like asking what SR20DE parts can be used on a CA20E. Make sense? We could talk about "maybe" for just about anything, but the bottom line is that these engines are different. very different. The piston thing isn't unheard of, the coincidental matching between otherwise dissimilar engines. But beyond that, you generally don't get accidental crankshaft compatibilities between two dissimilar engines. The same goes for heads, camshafts, rods, etc.

Hey,,, i've got this bad'ass ol'e mini bike with a techumsee 6 horse in it,,, brand new piston i put in 6 years ago,, anyway,, i was told i could use this on my KA when i strip it down cause it's the same diamiter.  This will work right

seishukuOct 17, 2008, 11:08 pm · #17

Yeah, rarely do cylinder spacing and journal sizes match.
Might as well just save up and have a custom forged one made.

VG30_S12Oct 18, 2008, 5:22 am · #18

ummm... wtf is going on here... are some of you guys ridiculing me?

thread = confusing

ok so the FJ lower end is L-series based, and the KA is Z series based so there's probably little chance that a KA crank would work in an FJ... i didn't think that it would, but my hope was that maybe the bearings and other more vital parts could still be used, but if its not based off the L series there's little chance in that too...

so can anyone explain why KA piston rings (89mm bore) might be able to work in an FJ(90mm bore)? ive got to find those threads...

and also, are L16/L18 bearings mentioned in Aus the same as an L26/L28?

asparagusOct 18, 2008, 5:37 am · #19

I vote yes for a jeffwins quote sticky thread.

bleuoval64Oct 18, 2008, 7:35 am · #20

FJ bore/stroke is 89/80mm  (1990cc)
KA bore/stroke is 89/96mm  (2389cc)

Pistons are the same size(bore), so the rings might be compatible  KA Pistons might work if the FJ rods attach at the same spot as the FJ pistons.  The main thing you should look for is the distance from the center of the shaft that connects it to the rod and the top of the piston.  If it is different, you will either have lower compression or the piston will hit the head.  As the KA and FJ are obviously two different series of engines, I doubt you will do much with swaping hard parts.

IF, and I stress IF, the pistons are swappable and lower compression, it might be beneficial if you are going to put a turbo on it, but for the trouble you might as well get FJ-T internals as it would be stronger.

DjayS12Oct 18, 2008, 10:48 am · #21

If the crank shaft bearing location is the same and the same width, if, idem for the rod bearing widt, and the pulley end the same. Then it might fit in the block.

Now, it is to know if the piston will came too low in the cylinder at the LDC (Lower Dead Center) wich will mean serious piston or cylinder damage.

Will the FJ20 pulley fit on the KA crank? if not, dunno if KA use belt or chain like the FJ, but it might mean to build a custom crank pulley to keep your timing right.

And if the piston is knocking on the head, you could always try to get 1mm more clearance with a thicker headgasket. And anyways if it knock the head it would mean that the piston will go too high in the TDC..so what if the top ring raise over the cylinder?? ouch.. again big damage.

I'm not saying it cannot be done. If it fit in the crankcase it's already a nice start, but there risk that you will need to do a lot of more custom work to make it fit!

That's about all I can see from my knowledge.. might add a few things later right know I'm in a hurry!

s13eaterApr 28, 2009, 9:20 pm · #22

the crank bearings are definately the same as the l series motors as i'am using them on my fj rebuild, you only have to modify the oil holes as they don't quite match up.

Yes they made an N/A version, they are much more common than the turbo model.
and yes FJ20E's can make alot of power in n/a trim, there was a feller here a while back with a S12 rally car with a FJ20E N/a build that made something to the tune of 230ish rwhp
Pretty impressive

zombie thread needs to re-die...

*maybe* with custom rods. Still, custom pistons would just be easier in the end, and JE will make whatever specs you want.
