is there any difference between the ca18de and the ca18det besides the turbo?

TalkingGoatsOct 30, 2008, 3:47 pm · #2

Pistons and cams for sure.

? Do we have two red barons now?

Isn't there one from Texas with a super sexy SE?

red baronOct 30, 2008, 5:12 pm · #3

whats the difference in cams?

TalkingGoatsOct 30, 2008, 5:18 pm · #4

Ask google. S13 guys would know.

brewster240Oct 30, 2008, 5:22 pm · #5

it depends where the de is from, and if its fwd or rwd.

Umai NaaOct 31, 2008, 2:35 pm · #6

Differences are mainly in lift and duration.

CA18DE - IN248/8.5mm, EX248/8.5mm
CA18DET - IN240/7.5mm, EX248/8.5mm

**FWIW, you can use a CA18DET exhaust cam on the intake side (Ie, running two exhaust cams), for a handy little upgrade.

ok cool im going to put a ca18de head on a ca18et bottom end. i already read all the stuff on the ca20det sounds pretty cool. does anyone know what size the cam is on the ca18et is?

ArroOct 31, 2008, 6:30 pm · #8

I don't think you can use the ET cam in the DET head. Also doesn't the DE use direct ignition on the spark plugs, and other more advanced controls for the timing, like a CAS? I've never heard of someone putting a DE or DET head on a CA18ET and using the CA18ET's electronics.

no im using the cams out of the de i was just wondering the cam size on the et. im going to use the coil pack set up.

sam31183Nov 1, 2008, 10:08 pm · #10

I know that someone has used the et head on the det block...

ArroNov 2, 2008, 2:15 am · #11

Yes, but not the other way around... you can't just bolt on the DET head and expect it to work. The ET is set up for dual spark, 8 plugs. It's timing is totally different. The DET head requires a lot more than hardware to make it work properly is what I'm saying. There's more to it than just switching the head, and at that point, you might as well put in a complete DET swap.

Confused on why u wanna do this.

I wouldnt even use the ca18et bottom end if you have access to a ca18de. Rods are much stronger in the ca18de than in the ca18et.

to answer the first post. crank girdle and piston oil squirters of the DET are MIA on the DE. The crank and rods are the same. The pistons are of the same design but domed for higher compression. Cam specs differ as stated. And if ur talking FWD DE not imported RWD then of course the intake mani and wiring are different. And I think the FWD ca18de uses high impedence injectors and the ca18det uses low impedence.

Due to havin no dizzy it is possible to swap a FWD ca18de into a RWD chassis. Obviously not a bolt in deal but not impossible as with SR and KA FWDs. Will bolt straight to the S12s tranny.

So ya, would not bother with ca18et bottom end.

edit: oh and accessory setup is diff on FWD ca18de. MK2 ca20e stuffs and MK2 lower harness will swap over fine. Has to be MK2 though cuz of belt style.

brewster240Nov 6, 2008, 8:05 am · #13

crank girdle and squirters are not mia in all n/a ca18de

rods are not always the same as det, depends on which n/a you have.

cam specs are not always different then det, depends on which n/a you have.

fwd de/t will bolt right in just like rwd if you have the proper brackets. absolutely nothing like the issues with ka/sr fwd's. distributer is the least of your worries with those.

seishukuNov 6, 2008, 10:43 pm · #14

I don't recall any CA18DE's having a girdle or squirters... Not USDM ones anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

IggyEGuanaNov 8, 2008, 5:28 am · #15

Think he means certain RWD ones. For peeps like us and its easier to source a FWD and do the work instead. Would be neat to import and drop it in though. JDM goodness is always yummy. IIRC they're cheap but rarely imported. I guess call and request fixes that.

Still wanna do a ca18de with long runner headers, itbs, and nitrous someday.

brewster240Nov 8, 2008, 5:31 am · #16

i have a jdm n/a in storage.

plans are to put it in a 510, or a datsun roadster.

bump the compression, side draft carbs, tuned headers, etc.

oh, and sourcing the usdm fwd ones is a waste of time.

you'd spend more gathering the parts to build one then you would to just buy one, or buy a turbo one.

crank girdle, rods, pistons, im pretty sure the usdm intake manifold to head flange is slightly different, just enough to be a pain in the ass, etc.

ArroNov 8, 2008, 6:17 am · #17

yeah this idea is a waste of time really, I think that's the summary of the various comments here from a handful of you.
