i was wondering how different is the 240/280z rear axle compared to a solid axle s12. does anyone know where to get specs of those rear ends?

JonBSep 9, 2009, 11:18 pm · #2

They got Independents in them. R180s I think.

nothing like anything in any s12

http://www2.zhome.com:81/zcarfilesJPEG/70ReSusp.jpg

chassis code is s30,
280zx is s130, and is similiar to z31/m30/s12

240/260z's have r180's...all 280z's have r200's. the spline count on the halfshafts might be different though.
im currently working at a z speciality shop and my boss has a 260z with a 350ci swapped in...hes been running aggressively on the r180 for 2 years now with no problems. he is having me swap over a r200 here shortly from a 280z for longer reliability, im gonna take the r180 and see if our shafts work with it.

Those R180's are the same as ours, the difference is the bolt-in stubs vs our c-clip CV axles.

i love how he asks about axles an everyone goes on about diffs.

i was just wondering because i found they make all types of stuff for z's and i thought the old ones were solid axle so i could swap it.

silvia love240/260z's have r180's...all 280z's have r200's.

Not exactly.... the 280Z car (75 through '78) came with an R-200 rear end. All automatics of these years were R-180s. The 280ZX '79-'83 were as follows:

All years 280zx non turbo automatics were R-180
All years 280zx turbo automatics were R-200
The '79 280zx coupe 4 or 5 spd were R-180
The '79 280zx GL and the 2+2 4 or 5 spd were all R-200
All '80-'83 manuals and '83 manual turbo were R-200

All 300ZX '83-'89? were R-200

All '84-'86 200SX were R-200

I thought he ment the diff swap when he inquired about the axle.

What? No.

I didn't, they are the same, so the spline count is the same, that answers that.
They just have bolt in stubs, where as we have clip in CV shafts.

so what you are saying is that an axle is a differential?

there is so much wrong info in this thread, can it be deleted? there is already a diff info sticky.

ca18et cars had an r200
ca20e irs cars came with r180
ca20e solid axle cars had H190
vg cars had r200 with like a 3.90 rear i may be wrong

so not all s12's were r200 if they were theyre wouldnt be threads about ppl swapping to r200's in there ca20 cars and such.

agreed with brewster this thread is kinda meh...... not going anywhere

and the original question is reffering to a SOLID AXLE s12.

this is the part: subframe

i have a subframe  of silvia S13 and subframe  of silvia S14...I install the S14 subframe...

which of the two is better?

ArroSep 15, 2009, 11:57 pm · #17

It does not fit into the S12. Does not work, not S13, not S14. Not compatible.

Ju_S12_TurboSep 16, 2009, 12:13 am · #18
ArroNot compatible.
And if you want to put it in, you will need a lot of custom fabrication
datzenmikeSep 16, 2009, 2:16 am · #19

Ooops yes I meant the TURBO cars only. Well you guys know S12 stuff better than me.

brewster240i love how he asks about axles an everyone goes on about diffs.

Well his last question says specs on rear ends.

No.... I'm saying the axles have the same spline count, because the differentials are the same. The only difference, is the fact that the Z uses bolt-in axle stubs, where as our R180 uses snap-in CV shafts.
