well, after the drift event i noticed 1st thru second gear, it makes a horrid noise, randombly, ever once in awhile, it sounds exactly like a piece of light metal is rubbing agaisnt my flywheel

after i hit 3rd gear it goes away.... insights?

did you clime under car yet?

driveshaft?

carrier bearing?

dose engaging/disengaging clutch make any difference?

JayOct 1, 2009, 4:12 am · #3

If it sounds like a metal squealing/whining noise that reverberates in the shifter, Much like how a rotor sounds when your turning it on a lathe. It's the pilot bushing. I had to change mine a week after I dropped the KA in. if the noise goes away when in gear it points more towards that too

Oh, and what brewster said.

The pilot bearing would only make noise when the clutch is down. When clutch is up and engaged it would be turning at same speed as the tranny input shaft.... no noise.

sam31183Oct 11, 2009, 12:40 am · #9

yah...but, normal over the counter valvoline 75 90 at napa is gl5...which is bad on synchros...so gl4 is recommended...

Well 1/2 aren't located higher in the transmission than 3/4 or even 5th. They are located 'behind' 3rd and 4th just forward of the adapter plate.

First thing, check the oil level.

In the picture above the top most right gear you see is first, just to the left is second (with synchro hub between) and then third gear. There is no forth gear.

If there is noise under load possibly one of the counter bearings is going. The counter shaft is just below the main shaft 1/2/3 gears and is in constant mesh with them. The front counter gear bearing is fairly easy to get at and change, (it's the lower left bearing in the picture above) the rear is mounted on the counter shaft and rides in the adapter plate just behind the counter 1st gear. To get to it the tranny needs to be dismantled much further. The rearmost counter shaft bearing is just below the speedo drive worm gear in this photo below. It's at the end of the shaft and has a large nut behind it. This bearing rides in the tail stock.
