So with all the rain we got in socal I had to drive thru a couple really flooded streets to get home last week. Next day I'm driving and I noticed the voltmeter dropping rapidly leading to the car leaving me stranded in the rain. Alternator crapped out. I assumed since the 'nator is mounted so low on the VG it probably got wet and shorted out so I'm throwing a new one in tomorrow. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?
Drowned Alternator?
it happened to my once in my 88 N/A 2+2 Z
i say get the maxima alternator it's a better unit. imo
Happened to my 98 contour while parked, was really irriatted that the car kept dying (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
Someone please tell me there is an easy way to get to the top/back bolt on the vg alternator? I took out part of the intake, but still can't find a way to get it with a wrench or ratchet.
Intake?
Get at it from underneath. That is the easiest way to get it out.

12mm wrench, if that doesnt cut it get a 12mm socket with a ratchet and a very short extension and try that.

Not necessary unless he has a bunch of extra electronics, radio shit, etc.

The maxi one is cheaper though lee, which makes it worthwhile. at least the ones I found were...
Alright, so I got the new alternator on and fully charged the battery, started her up and the same shit is happening. No charge from alternator. Any ideas?

worse thing you could possibly ever do. go back and have it tested. VG alternators are notorious for being bad out of the shelf/box. go bad have them test it, if it reads back have them replace it and have them test that alternator too. i learned this the hard way with my 88 N/A 2+2 Z
while your there if you haven't already replace the belt as well..
my belt was like 5 years old and it started to slip, but you couldn't hear it. it made it seem as though the alternator was bad when it really wasn't bad at all, i still ended up replacing it with a maxi alternator anyway.

First where are you checking the alternator and how? If you didn't yet, check with a volt meter at the battery and alternator. It may be a wiring problem and not the alternator at all.
It was the wiring. Thanks everyone for your input.
