alright... well I welded my diff last week, cleaned her out rear good and now im getting a sound thats similar to tires squeeling and when its not squeeling it sounds like a rattle somewhere from the driveshaft. It does this only under heavy load, it still vibrates too. Carrier bearing? Pinion bearings?

Get under there and check all the ujoints for any play (driveshaft). Make sure the carrier bearing cage is intact, and check the fluid level in the diff - should be just below the upper filling hole.

Also, you could have tossed a wheel balance weight but they generally only start to vibrate at higher speeds, and they tend to reach their 'natural frequency' at a very specific speed and vibrate like a bastard.

First thing is easy. Check the exhaust system isn't moving over against the body when the engine torques over under heavy load. Check the full length for road damage or loose mounts.

Check the rear tranny mount for looseness or rotted rubber. You might check the engine mounts by prying on them as well. Sound and vibration can travel down the drive train and seem like it's somewhere else.

Check the rubber isolator around the hanger bearing. Grab the drive shaft and try to move it out of position, it should be firmly mounted with a rubbery stiffness. If torn or rotted it will allow the drive shaft to move out of position under torque, the U joints will go out of alignment and vibrate. If the joints are already old they may groan. The carrier bearing seldom ever fails. Many people change them with a kit, but it's the new rubber isolator that solves the problem.

There are three U joints to check. Grasp the transmission tail stock in one hand and the drove shaft with the other just behind the U joint and try to force in opposite directions while looking for and trying to feel any looseness or play. Don't be afraid to 'lean on it' a bit. It can handle hundreds of lb of torque... you can't hurt it. Rotate 90 degrees and try again. Do this for the other two sides. Any play no matter how small, means replacement. The only movement will be rotational. Now check the other two joints. Inspect the shaft for missing balance weights and any road damage.

H 190 or R-180 diff, they switched mid year. If H-190 check the condition of all four links for solid mounting and rubber including the shocks. R-180, check the 4 U joints and all rubber bushings on the control arms and rear cross member. Inspect the rear differential mounting points for looseness. Don't be afraid to pry with a piece of 2X4 to check for excess movement. This only does this in 1st. and 2nd. and hard acceleration. Both diffs are strong an reliable if maintained, meaning filled with oil and changed every 30K. This leaves the two rear wheel bearings.

Th slowest rotating thing is the tires/rear axles. The drive shaft will be spinning 3-4 times faster

mine used to do that, it was my carrier bearing, i just bolted a rubber mount onto the bracket to make more tension.

lol

with a ca20e most of your load is only 1st  and early second gear, so its probally the driveshaft, if it was a axle wheel bearing it would just be noisy at first, not wobbly

and if it was a unbalanced wheel it would get worse at high speeds

I have my diff completely unbolted and im having a hard time getting the axles out of either side of it could someone explain to me how i should get them out? Ive pulled out other diffs off of s13s and the axles just popped out but these seem to be stuck

They just pop out, sometimes it takes a little force.
I like to use a pair of long screwdrivers on either side and pry, like it shows in the service manual, usually just pops right out.

Thanks ill try that when I get home and let you know how it goes

so they just pop off they dont go into the diff?
as i had the same prob, i even tried taping them with a hammer then a little harder and they never budged!

MaxpowJul 29, 2010, 11:19 pm · #9

Just pry them out of the diff they should pop right out.

the H233 LSD is in Nissan King Cab d21  1988. engine is Z24.
and I was wondering does it fit in R200 longnose.I do not think that it fits ther 100% polt on.

datzenmikeAug 31, 2010, 4:54 am · #11

It was also used in the WD-21. The H-233 is larger than a Ford 9" it is a massive diff. In all the H-233 is 1.3" larger diameter than the 200mm. I would doubt it. Here's mine:

thanks,I was wondering if only the LSD-unit fits?

datzenmikeSep 11, 2010, 12:58 am · #13

I seriously doubt it will fit. The D21 side gears were 31 spline till '96 and 33 spline after. posted image

how did you do that? i dont have the money to fix it?

Updated with a new question...

wut kinda axle is it? if its solid axle u gotta get a slide hammer which u can rent from a auto parts store and take a chain put it on ur axle studs run lugs nuts down on it then wack the shafts out from both sides then u diff case will come out.. make sure u put a few nuts on ur diff case before u wack ur shafts out so it dont put pressure on ur shafts and that it dont fall out. hope this helps

Or, instead of doing all of that malarky, use the wheel and tire as a slide hammer, and your lugnuts as the stop... Or use the brake drum as a slide hammer and the lugnuts as the stop.
This is only for SRA cars though...
