when im driving and i hit 4000 rpm my car begins to like studder
and putter, it does it in every gear. my fuel pump is pumpin, got a new fuel filter
but i got no idea y it is doing this because it never did this before.

spark

check your firing order

lking04Sep 25, 2009, 3:53 am · #3

it cant be my injectors
and my order is correct
could it be some things else

Phisherman09Sep 25, 2009, 4:09 am · #4

secondary coil (intake side). replace it. problem solved.

search dude. i know theres a thread on here cuz i started it like 2 years ago hahahaha

lking04Sep 25, 2009, 4:24 am · #5

why do u think it is the intake side coil. and wats ur
old post titled so im not searchin forever lol.
i tested it and it passed the test with my dmm

Phisherman09Sep 25, 2009, 4:27 am · #6

you got two coils. from idle to 4,000 rpm it fires both sets of plugs. intake and exhaust. at 4,000 rpm it shuts down the intake side plugs and runs only the exhuast. so, either you have a bad coil, or a wiring problem to that coil.

lking04Sep 25, 2009, 4:58 am · #7

so i need to inspect my exhaust side plugs and wires and coil.
so form 0 to 4000 rpm im using both sides but from 4000 further im using only my exhaust

whats the resistance rating for the coils so i can check em

u cant.. it only happens under load. aka in gear.

just swap your ig coils i guess. and see if it acts different lol

it adds up autozone are a bunch of idiots.

its a really common problem on these cars. ive probably seen 5  threads about this problem since ive been on the site... check the ground as well. do what david said and swap coils and see what happens.

you can always do the coil mod too, make both fire at all times...

draw out your firing order. how you have your plug wires

and swap your plug wires with new ones  or other used ones

I too have been having this same problem and have tried switching coils (both intake and exhaust), checked the tps which had about 7-9v when revved....umm, I have replaced all the plugs and the fuel filter also.  Nothing else to try here??  Come on, I know the ca20 is hardly desireable but I need to get this running for work so any other suggestions would be badass!!

EightySix200SXAug 10, 2010, 5:23 am · #16

the transistors om the same bracket as the coils.

yo slicks so u got a sra notchie now huh?

SOS, notch is dead on the side of the road!  Was running on the freeway and it just lost power.  Tried downshifting and giving it gas and it just wouldn't go.  I'm dead in a parkinglot somewhere in Fullerton lolz, not really tho.  The car was running fine (still not over 4k) after the new coil.  Have spark on both coils, checked the fuel filter and it's not clogged, and everything seems to be connected... Halp!

Just fixed it with this guy it was cap and rotor all fucked up on the inside. Doesn't hurt to replace plugs, wires, coils, fuel filter, check sensors, vacuum lines and clean it all up either. At least it can't hurt.

You were right Justin. The vacuum line going to his FPR was also blown out, which is probably why it died, why it didn't go up to 4k was the cap and rotor for sure.

So I'm thinking of re-doing the rings on my CA20 so it's a little more sale worthy (lost an oil ring on the #4 cylinder...which was all the reason I needed for the ka swap lol). I found a set of standard sized rings for 12 bucks.

The engine has 150k on it. Will the standard size be fine? They also offer a set that is .020" over, and that set is 18 bucks. Which should I get?

Orrr...if anyone wants to buy my motor and transmission...I won't even have to deal with it lol.

RedneckAug 18, 2010, 6:53 am · #22

Putting new rings in the ca20 to try and get more money for it is totally not worth it. A lot of guys give decent running ca20's away for basically free so you have to keep that in mind. Most guys don't wanna pay a hundred bucks for a ca20 when they can get a ka24e for the same price.

^this

I won't pay for another CA20... I'll pay for a KA instead. If someone wants to do anything with a CA20, that's their perogative, not yours anymore
CandellanAug 18, 2010, 9:36 pm · #24

You'll need to measure the pistons to gauge what size rings you need. If they're standard pistons you need standard rings. Oversize won't work, in fact they'll almost certainly pinch & score the bore.

xxstreetbikesxxAug 18, 2010, 9:55 pm · #25

straight up dude, its not worth it..

sohc ka's go for under 100 bucks,

Just give it up for some parts.. there are people that want dizzys, intakes, exhaust manis for ca20s

Scootin' ScottAug 19, 2010, 12:06 am · #26

That's kinda what I figured the response would be lol. Just needed to hear it from you guys =P

For realz

Sell your intake manifold. The brit's and French eat those things up like nothing. I sold both of mine to people in france.

Yea for forward facing manifold ca18et makes intercooler piping easier and looks better me and sideways both ran that setup.
