i have a 1987 coupe, with a solid axle, and i was wondering if there was an lsd that fit it

ArroOct 20, 2010, 4:02 am · #2

No you do not. Only 1984 nonturbo S12 came with solid axle. All 1985 and newer cars are independent rear suspension (IRS), with a short-nose R200 rear end. And there are LSD options available for our cars, just use the search feature and find them.

vegasS12Oct 21, 2010, 2:18 am · #3

Isn't our R200 longnose?

DjayS12Oct 21, 2010, 2:27 am · #4

Turbo and SE models came with R200, CA20 came with R180 and solid axles H190 if I remember right

sam31183Oct 21, 2010, 6:07 am · #5

and r180 lsd options are far and few between...it keeps getting worse and worse for this guy!

ArroOct 21, 2010, 6:15 am · #6

Yeah that's right, he has an R180. Long nose? I never get it straight lol

vegasS12Oct 21, 2010, 6:24 am · #7

Yea you said that the SE and turbo models s12 came with shortnose R200...
Aren't they longnose? Like the z31 R200?

datzenmikeOct 23, 2010, 1:40 am · #8

The R-200 I had from the CA18ET sure looked long.

All S12's with IRS had a longnose

The LSD from a shortnose R200 works in our longnose R200. That's where everyone is confused.

My useless R180 sure as hell is a longnose. Bitch is a good 6 inches longer than any other diff I've worked with.

ALL turbo models had a longnose R200
All turbo models were IRS
All VG's were R200 Longnose
ALL Ca20e IRS were R180
Only the 84 non-turbo was SRA

Rule of thumb, if you have an SRA, or an R180, your pretty fucked for an LSD. If you have an R200, there are plenty of options

DjayS12Oct 23, 2010, 2:39 am · #10

all S12s had longnose differential. CA20E 1985+ R180 longnose
CA18ET and VG30E all years R200 longnose

*edit* Jay beat me to it ^

JayOct 23, 2010, 2:46 am · #11

Yes I did.
But your S12 looks soooooooooooooooo much better than mine, and is much prettier to look at

sam31183Oct 23, 2010, 3:27 am · #12

hence why it is in his sig...hot notch roll call my brother!

vegasS12Oct 23, 2010, 4:31 am · #13

Quick Q when swapping out the r180 diff and axles for the R200 does it swap rite in or do you need some kind of modification work? Does the diff mount drive shaft all bolt up fine?

JayOct 23, 2010, 4:33 am · #14

All IRS S12's have the same subframe
And both longnose input flanges are the same
Wink

vegasS12Oct 23, 2010, 4:36 am · #15

Gracias !!

alundraOct 23, 2010, 9:52 am · #16

except someone which fitted an obx hsld made for R200 10mm and 12mm and a english which custom a s13 VLSD, no one put a CLSD from a short nose R200.

DjayS12Oct 23, 2010, 12:51 pm · #17

VegasS12, you need the axles and the rear half of the driveshaft from a R200 S12. With that, it's a bolt on affair!

I beg to differ on that. I had both an 87 and 88 SE the the flanges were different. I don't know if it had to do with the fact that the 87 was an auto and the 88 was a 5sp but I did a temp swap with the 88 diff into the 87 do I could do some maintenance work on the diff and still drive the car and to my surprise I had to swap the flanges so I could bolt up the drive shaft.
JayOct 24, 2010, 8:32 am · #19

Then I stand corrected!

seishukuOct 24, 2010, 4:29 pm · #20

The rear mounts are slightly different too, though either one can be made to work as long as you still have the rubber isolator.

Were they both SE or one was a CA20E. Because I know R200 and R180 have different flange but I also thought all R200 had the same flanges

Both SEs. Check my name.  ;)

DjayS12Oct 25, 2010, 10:37 am · #23

that was for the driveshaft only or both the driveshaft and the axles?

vg30e_x2_200sxOct 26, 2010, 7:48 am · #24

That was just for the driveshaft. The axles don't bolt up, they just slide in.

Just curious - has anyone attempted using the Q45 VLSD in an S12? I tried the search function and came up empty.

vg30e_x2_200sxOct 30, 2010, 2:17 am · #26

I THINK that's an R230 (don't quote me on that) so it wouldn't work.

JonBOct 30, 2010, 6:13 am · #27

Anyone ever find where to get a clutch type diff at a reasonable cost?

alundraOct 30, 2010, 11:24 am · #28

clutch LSD?reasonable cost because it needs to be controlled for worn, needs to be rebuild etc...

Hope someone one day try a a CLSD for an s13

I'm using a X32 VLSD in mine, custom halfshaft. no easy task.

Developed a thumping somewhere in the back under heavythrottle after about three or four years of use. Need to pull my tri-pods apart to inspect them.
acadianasportscarsOct 30, 2010, 1:03 pm · #30

Its an R200 for sure, but I figured there might need to be some work done because of the halfshafts.

I only ask, because I have one laying around here, and didn't know whether to post it for sale here. But if it won't be of help to anyone, I won't clutter the for sale section. LOL
