my brother(previous owner) replaced the harmonic balancer and it has the "V" shape. but the pulley is "ribbed" i think its called. so i was wondering if there was a version of the s12 that had a v belt on the power steering pump. i need help, no power steering is pretty annoying!!!
"V" shapped Power steering pump pulley. PLEASE HELP!
I ran into this problem before
Silver top CA = Ribbed belt
Black top CA = V belt
I think
that must be what it is, i have the silver top. do you know how i could get black top PS pulley? i haven't checked with any auto parts stores around here i will next week when I'm not working

do you think the different pulleys would be interchangeable?
I think I have a black top ca20 with all the pulleys and belts on it if you need anything...
I think I couldn't swap pulleys, I'm pretty sure I had to swap the harmonic balancers for some reason or another
(I swapped a silver top into a black top car. using the black top equipment), And I'm pretty sure I NEEDED to swap the harmonic balancer. I had all the pulleys for both, and I think I couldn't just swap em on the PS or the alternator. that I had to run the black top harmonic balancer, with the black top mounts, and the black top pulleys.
i got a ca20 for parts... im not sure if you guys are talkin ca18, or ca20
were talking about the ca20.
yes vegas i think i need a PS pulley from the black top but by what jay said im not thinking i can just swap them out
So do you wan the whole pump? Or is it different brackets. I have both types. 2 84's and the yards an hour north have other years.
^this guy will help you bro!!!! i can attest to that! credible member
@ Jay: why couldn't you swap pulley, the shaft is too big?
Because as far as I'm concerned, I have swapped pulleys from alternator, P/S pump, A/C compressor a lot of time and it's always just a matter of getting the damn center nut off the thing, you just need an Impact wrench to get it off... IMO, it's probably a lot easier to get the right PS pulley and mod it out (if it is indeed impossible to swap over) than getting a hole PS pump shipped and running into a difference in brackets, alignment, etc... (face it, if you can't swap pulleys, both pump must be very different from each other.....) but it's a matter of knowing why it didn't fit... if the shaft is bigger, run a drill to the pulley and make it fit on the shaft... if it's not inline, either space the pulley or remove material behind to get it to line up... if the key way is different, take a dremel to it and 10 minutes of your time.... I don't think anything else could prevent it to bolt on an other PS pump...
nope the pump should work. all i need the the V shaped pulley off the black top motor. thats if there interchangable

because they were backwards.
I'm pretty sure I had to run everything the same, because the belt orders were different, and the alternators are not the same, The MKI and the MK II have two VERY different alternators, one's made by hitachi (MK I), and one's made by nissan (MK II)
Hitachi = 60 amps
Nissan = 70 amps
They had different mounting brackets, because of that (Most likely because of manufacturing style) the belt order was not the same on the harmonic balancer.
I've changed out many alternator pulleys before. So as far as I'm concerned, use the same harmonic balancer as what mounting brackets you have. the PS pump was the same between the two, but not the alternators, and not the brackets, and not the belt order

so your saying i should be able to change the PS pulley out and not have a problem?
