Hi everyone.
so... i decided, at last, to make my own build thread.

i brought a 86' 200sx & wanna drift with this baby.
all the mods gonna be made by myself and some friends
i have no real mechanical knowledge so ill be asking a lot of Qs

with nothing more to say, heres the pic dump.

Donk with those wheels lol looks like alot of work is headed towards you man

ArroMar 23, 2011, 11:57 pm · #3

Do you know Pedro? He lives in the Dominican Republic, his car is one of the featured cars on the home page here... you should get in touch with him.

Car looks like it needs a lot of work but some of the roughest cars sometimes end up amazing..

Welcome to Club-S12. And yeah, I admit I don't like those wheels either :P Just sayin.

ViksonfireMar 24, 2011, 3:58 pm · #4

yes, i kinda sorta know who pedro is....
i have certainly seen his car, but we havent really spoken.
i'm trying to get in touch with him for info and help & all that jazz.

i kno the wheels are fugly xD
but i have developed a liking for them (dont ask why, i dont really know myself.)
and was considering painting them pink or some LOOK-AT-ME-I-NEED-ATTENTION color.
but, worry not, what i really want are some 15' meshies.

ANYWAYS, last weekend, i started working on the car, to see what else is there...
there a lot more than meets the eye.

- Both rear calipers are gone, brake lines cutted. one of the rear disk's also gone. (the previous owner Probably did it to do Burnouts) (*Primary Concern)
- One front disk has a huge crack. (*Primary Concern)
- the car has a lot of rust (*Terciary Concern)
- the car has an LPG system. (*Secondary Concern)
- SUSPENSION. (*Primary Concern)
- Welded Wheel studs (I was like WTF?!)

i have my first q:
- The car doesnt have an E-Brake, is that because i dont have rear brakes or is it because de e-brake is fucked up too?

the ebrake is part of the rear brakes, yep. Get those replaced and reconnect the cable.

ViksonfireMay 8, 2011, 6:24 pm · #6

after like three weeks without touching the car, this weekend i worked on it, mostly to get it running on gas...
so i checked the pump, and it works, so i was like erm gotta be the injectors,
i got them out cleaned em and they worked, some were clogged yes, but nothing that a Carb cleaner wouldnt fix.
after i cleaned them and all that jazz, i try to test them on the car and NOTHING,
not a single spray... so im thinking the problem must be in the harness.

the harness itself is a mess, a bunch of things cutted and unplugged so i dont really know what to look for.
is there some way someone could guide me in the right direction... with some kind of harness for dummies?

on another note: while i was working on it, two wheel STUDS fell off and the strut tower got fucked up.

EDIT: ill take pictures tomorow, to see if you help me out.

EDIT 2: I think i know what the problem is: here in the dominican republic, lpg systems are used a lot,
in order to use one of those they need to find a way to stop the fuel pump and injectors from working.
so they tend to cut/disconect a ground wire from somewhere. now i just need to find where.

i used a tester to check the voltage from the plug to the chassis and it was 12 v
now my question: is it supposed to be ALWAYS 12v or its gonna change between the two voltages?
like, the injectors are like on/off, on/off.... right?

picture dump coming soon.

so i checked the injectors  plugs and they have voltage, but the pulse is not coming from the computer.
im checking the efi wiring driagram to check eeveything off.

q: what would be the implications of trowing the injector lines from the ECU manually?
i know i ask a lot of very dumb q, sorry

ArroMay 17, 2011, 3:28 pm · #9

You mean making new wires? Basically building your own harness... it's been done before, probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

ViksonfireDec 12, 2011, 1:25 pm · #10

i found out the computer had been a long time in diagnosis mode. can that fuck up the computer?
the computer doesnt seem to work.
thats when i decided that the swap was gonna happen sooner than i expected.

after a lot of researching i choose to go the SR because of the "easyness" of the swap. wanted to go KA but heard that it was one of the hardest swaps to our chassis. and as im not experienced with swaps i ran away from the idea. (wanna go KA in my sentra tho)

so i bought the engine already. read the threads about it and have an uncle whos gonna help me out. im actually deciding wether to keep the CA trans or go with the SR one. we gonna start working on it this weekend.

now that i have the engine im starting to think about suspension and brakes. and which path to go.

I_heart_VVLDec 12, 2011, 7:37 pm · #11

nice B14 on your second post 8)
KA swaps are just as hard as SR swaps the only difference is all the turbo stuffs. I would definitely recommend you use the SR/KA trans tho, its much stronger. But doesn't bolt up like the stock trans so it's up to you.

thnx, the B14 is the DD. (love that car)

about the SR swap, i have read quite many threads and from what i read the engine mounts are the same as the CA20E. the only problem would be the trans for which we would have to make the mount and make a hole cuz the shifter is a little farther awa from the engine. (im more concerned about the whole "getting the engine in" fact, atleast for now.)
BattleFairyDec 15, 2011, 3:40 am · #13

fuck that...ive put my RB with a crapy boat whinch inside my s12! The CA was removed with bare hands... so a SR shouldnt that hard to get in ;-)

ArroDec 15, 2011, 2:52 pm · #14

Yeah it won't be a big issue. There are a number of threads with pictures on custom mounts. It will be easier for you because your car came as a 5-speed, I have pictures in my thread on how to use some cutting and some washers to make a trans mount that works:

i went with your version of the transmount. and i have two questions:
how far back did you have to grind/cut the big piece of the mount.
and can i use the upper part of the trans mount that came with the sr trans?
the ca trans support was broken, as can be seen on picture #3 of the last post.

on another note. will i have to weld the driveshaft  or do you guys actually disassamble something in order for it to work?
do i need an intercooler in orther for the car to work properly? (as it came with one)

other than that the engine is in its place inside Zachary. (thats the name of my twelve)
it was my first swap, which i enjoyed thoroughly.
next, once all the wiring is worked out, im gonna go on with the brakes.

yup its air cooled. 48 years old piece of family history.

d_k_jose_s12Dec 19, 2011, 12:15 pm · #25

Como va el swap??
How hard was to get the swap and how much did it cost you??

getting the engine in was mad easy as everyone said it would be.
and it didnt cost me anything as i did it my self with my tools (and a couple of them borrowed tools)
the mounts fit right in. (you just have to cut the hole for the shifter first, dont do what i did, i cutted the hole after half n' hour of trying to make the mounts sit.)
but i really dont have time to do the wiring. so imma pay for that.

i have another question: do i NEED an intercooler in orther to run the engine? or is it just a plus?
night_s12Dec 19, 2011, 1:11 pm · #27

Well the sr is designed with one so i would imagine that u should use it. Plus visible front mount IC's are baller :D

iceagegDec 19, 2011, 4:25 pm · #28

If you decide to run without an intercooler i would seriously consider low boost levels.  Heat is one of the major contributors to detonation.  Detonation = engine death.  Otherwise it should run fine without one.  Might even notice reduced lag.  You should still plan on running one though.

d_k_jose_s12Dec 19, 2011, 4:57 pm · #29

Mira amigo es mejor que uses el intercooler es mejor para el motor y asi puedes ponerle mas psi sin preocuparte de el motor que se sobre caliente tanbien te recomiendo un oil cooler

ViksonfireDec 19, 2011, 6:54 pm · #30

i plan on running with one. but not in the instant future, i asked in order for it to start and go to work, simple things like that. nothing "racing-i-need-to-go-faster". my top priorities are brakes and suspension, then exterior/paint and afterwards comes everything else.

on another note: im still working on the transmision mount.
how far back did you have to grind/cut the big piece of the mount?
and can i use the upper part of the trans mount that came with the sr trans?
and..

SHIT, it seems as if the SR. ECU is fucked up (what do ecu have against me?)
so right now we are in a little fork road.
its either keeping the engine and praying the parts store gets an sr in the next shipment.
or giving the engine back....
or keeping the engine and buying a new ecu (APEXi power fc, maybe?)
even tho ^ this idea sounds lovely that would imply that i lose some money as the parts store wont refund any money. and of course we still dont know the engine condition overall.

im gonna have a nice long chat with them today... ill keep you guys posted.

I_heart_VVL on 02:27:22 PM / 22-Dec-11nice! keep us updated!
and please for the love of god, get an intercooler! even a stock sidemount would be better than none at all.

thanks guys, somehow i  thought that i could run it without an intercooler.

I also admire the tiled driveway, and the way you just lay stuff on it...  My mom would go crazy!  Whenever pulling up to their place in a used car I was greeted with an aluminum drip sheet/pan!  Also the "anything goes" street parking is nice - only place we get away with that is country-side.  I hope you get things sorted out...  Awesome seeing people in other countries doing their thing.  Good Luck!  Thank You.
ViksonfireDec 24, 2011, 5:25 pm · #36

erm, one question is the sr supposed to move when i turn the steering wheel?
we tried to move it to make the driveway "cleaner" but when i started to turn the wheels the engine started to move as well, so we left him in its rightful place. :P

Merry Christmas to you all!

Motor should be stationary.........        .....?

ViksonfireDec 24, 2011, 8:59 pm · #38

i know it should be stationary thats why im asking

btw: it still doesnt have the trans mount. so im guessing thats the reason...
actually the engine is just sitting there in its engine mounts.
but im wondering if it has happened to anyone else ?

yes, they are kinda easy to get if you know where to look.
even tho sometimes they a bit expensive. and lately they are getting rather scarce, specially with a manual trans.

on another note, it is ALIVE :D

today we are finishing the wiring and getting the IC and Rad in order to get it pretty.
i still havent finished the trans mount T_T. but today after work we will make sure we finish.

thnx everyone for the encouraging comments.

btw: i was searching the forum and saw some folks that were gonna try to make the led taillights did someone manage to get it done?
im thinking about playing with my broken cornerlight to see how it ends up.

QUESTION: ARE ALL ECU INTERCHANGEABLES? the guy whos working the electricity said they arent. i dont know if i belive him.

They are interchangable, in that both will run your SR (as long as it isn't a TypeX).

Wondering if your cars have requirements, like annual vehicle inspections..?  Cali has their dreaded SMOG test and Hawaii has annual vehicle safety inspection.  Both are somewhat scams $$$, but states make money and car repair shops get da business.

Edit:  Our vehicle registration is determined by weight.  And every year it goes up!

well, i live in the Dominican Republic.
here we have what we call "la revista y el marbete"
both which you cannot drive without... those are placed (sticked) in the right upper corner of the front glass and the authorities "check the glass for them" in order to impound your car. the thing is i have been driving my B14 for three years without putting them in place (even tho i do buy them, i just don't like the way they look on my car).
and "la revista", supposedly the check your car to see if you have a fire extinguisher, first aid thingy, emergency triangle, ect. "if you don't you are not able to drive that car". i know people that get it without even taking the car to check.

so no, even if there is a law regarding all that (which i doubt) the authorities here are not enforcing it.
yes, i live in a country where transit and transport are ULTRA disorganized.
