So I am writing this so anyone can read what I've done and have my impressions of my mods.  Currently on my car before this round of upgrades are as follows: 1) custom 2.5" to oval to 2.5" exhaust ( for fitment issues ), 2) 300zx tt maf (relocated in front of my front left wheel )with apexi safc to control it, 3) ka24 throttle body ( intake ported to match ) 4) Evo 8 intercooler mid-mounted ( 1" in front of radiator ) with custom 2.5" piping to and from, 5) 1 t25 turbo from my 90 300zx tt with custom downpipe, 6) NGK plugs and Magnecor wires, with dual coil mod done and 1 msd blaster ss coil, 7) higher rated fuel pump and aftermarket pressure regulator, 8) innovate wideband o2 sensor, 9) running 14psi, 10)  and a host of custom aftermarket suspension and stereo that does not effect engine output.

Upgrades I am doing this round as follows: 1) Cam from WEBCAMS grind #460 .428 lift with 260 duration intake/exhaust, 2) JWT z31 single valve springs part# AVG3E-L6SPR ( 8 of course ), 3) intake and exhaust are gasket matched, 4) e-fans from a Maxima or Altima from the jy with thermo switches to run, 5) one colder NGK plugs ( so 7's rather than 6's ), 6) second msd blaster ss coil and rev limiter ( the reason I am doing this round of upgrades ), 7) and a host of maintenance done at the same time since everything is apart (water pump, timing belt, etc).

I will have to wait till mid February to get it dyno'd and have no dyno from before unfortunatly.  I run FP at my autocross on 23x9x15 slicks, and dd my car so I am looking for more reliability than total power though still want a fun dd, I have my 90 300zxtt for fast if I want it.

RedneckDec 24, 2011, 3:32 pm · #2

Personally I think your throwing your money down the drain with all these mods. The ca18et head flows air about as well as a clogged drain pipe and a stock sr20det would probably make more horsepower then your ca18et with all these mods. The ca18et rods are also pretty weak so once you start getting much over 160 to 170whp I wouldn't be too surprised if a rod bends.

P.S. Apexi SAFC2's (to quote Sam) are about the equivalent of flashy light boxes. Do yourself a favor and get a real tuning program (i.e. Nistune, Megasquirt) and not a limited tuning range piggyback that only controls fuel like the SAFC2.

Merry Christmas.

Why don't u just go ca18det or sr man I know its cool to be unique but that engine is just a black whole were ur money is gonna go and at the end of the day ur really going to regreat it well that is just my 2cents

Jeremy ADec 24, 2011, 3:52 pm · #4

What is your best guess at the power you're putting down at the wheels currently?  And why not just leave it where its at if you want the reliability,  cause you're going to hit maximum output on the CA18ET soon I would assume,  which fringes on unreliable, like Redneck said.  But if your goal is max output with that motor without swapping,  it seems like you've got things headed in the right direction.  Cool, man!  Keep us updated.

JeremyDec 24, 2011, 5:05 pm · #5

So for everyone the reason I am doing mods is 1) because I bent a valve and 2) I will not spend $1500 or more on and sr unless all my other projects are complete and with my dad wrecking my truck that wont be for awhile.  I AM NOT looking for max power, though fun is really nice. It is also not a "I want to be unique" thing as again I have a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo as a much more powerful car.  I also didn't ask for opinions about my thoughts or mods I wanted this as a place where people could ask what I thought about the mods and if I would do them again, so as to possibly help others.

Redneck: have you used an SAFC if not, thank you for your input though please don't comment on there power over things or there lack of power over things. Personal experience is what this post is about. I know they are not the end all beat all product, I am also not in a place financially to put $2500 plus into this vehicle.

d_k: look above to most of your reply. I also am not trying to be the same as everyone or different than everyone, it is what I am currently driving ( or will be when i put it all back together ). sr's and 18det's are nice can't afford it now. i have not put in nearly as much as alot of poeple that I've read here have put into there motor or motor swap and I don't condemn them for doing so whichever way they go. Thank you for your input as well.

Jeremy A: I honestly coundn't tell you how much power I have, I have driven my friends mini with JCW and his 87 sx SE and though the SE feels better top end mine feels snappier ( probably due to not enough total flow is my guess on the top end ).  His is modded up with 300zx N/A stuff (maf, comp, etc ) and his dyno'd at something like 170 to 180 at the rear wheels and about the same torque.

Again thanks for everyone's input and if possible keeping it to questions about how it turns out rather than saying I'm wasting time, money, energy, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hey keep it up I too was modding the ca18et its currently sitting due to the fact that my ecu took a shit on me lol it was stock I do reccomend getting new headstuds if you can because once good power is put down the headbolts will stretch it has happened to me your mod list looks good curiois tho why the regrind is it cheaper than buying a new cam if you go to ipp.com they made a turbo and na cam that are both better than the nismo euro cam. For me I'm wating on a garage so I can build my ca18et I'm looking for 400hp  out of it everyone on here thinks it's impossible until i show them a dyno sheetto prove it's not lol. as for the safc2 I had one and it's fine took a little bit to fine tune but it got there and i had no issues....So fuck'em if they want to down on you for using it.

what are you using for fuel like what size injectors? I ran dsm 450's which turned out well used them without a custom it is possible then i got some bartco stuff before his sit went downhill

My mods
ca20e head (different cam profile than the ca18et)
dsm 450's
evo3 big 16g turbo (on 8 psi)
bartco custom ex manifold
bartco custom fuel rail
ca20e front facing manifold with ka24de tb portmatched
aem uego wideband
safc2
ka24de stage 1 clutch ( you have to redriil like 5 of the holes on the pressure plate but it works I beat the shit out of it with no issues)
walbro 255lb fuel pump
and ebay fuel pressure regulator

Not sure how much power I was making as i didn't have a chance to dyno since the ecu took a shit but if you look up my youtube 86turbos12 i raced iggy he had a ca18det lightly modded on 12psi and only got me by a fender he dynoed at 202 on 12psi i believe and he was lean so that can give you an idea of what I was making or close to making....Dude if you want to mod the ca I say do it fuck what everyone else says after all you didn't ask for advice so basically any and all is null and void including mine but keep it up I would like to see what kind of power your making any chance on a dyno after it's done?

JeremyDec 25, 2011, 1:49 am · #7

Sideways_s12 thank you for your advice and up beat nature. i am currently running stock injectors but plan on running some drop in 420 cc's from an older euro car with a price of only $40 a piece.  I actually called ipp and they didn't sell those cams anymore and so told me who they got them from and it is a new billet not a regrind, and i couldn't find a euro cam so i don't know how much they cost.  i most certainly will be doing a dyno there is a local garage who will be doing the dyno.  yeah i still have to take some time to fine tune the safc and glad to here what your plans are, i called about the head studs and they are pretty pricey, though they are still a possibility.  i also hope to eventually make a ex mani for better flow though not sure when. i hope your plans come through and show what this motor can do. let me know how it all turns out.  and if i can help at all let me know.

Is there some reason you would think I wouldn't be knowledgeable from "personal experience" using an Apexi SAFC? Because your tone strongly implies that. I mean you didn't dispute what I said about the ca18et and its shortcomings but then assume I am just talking out of my ass about the SAFC? How does that work? Even aside from my own "personal experience" any reputable engine tuner will tell you not to waste your money on an SAFC when megasquirt (or other comparable engine management systems) can be had for around the same price or at most a few hundred more. I don't know where your getting this $2,500+ figure from.

But hey, its cool. If you wanna end up like most of the other guys that have dumped a good amount of money into the ca18et with lackluster at best results (myself included) you can go right ahead. I was just trying to give you a courtesy heads up from my clearly lacking personal experience.
JeremyDec 25, 2011, 11:54 am · #9

Redneck: you didn't state your experience you quoted someone else's in your response about the safc so I wasn't sure and only went by what you wrote as I don't know you personally, if I offended I'm sorry.  I also got my safc from a friend at a really reduced price, yes megasquirt is what I might go with if my power goals get to high but again I don't think they are that high yet, and at this time I don't have the extra time to tune a new setup as I need my car to dd.  And the 2500 is for a whole front clip type situation for the SRDET/18DET as I wouldn't want to have to source a whole bunch of parts from a whole bunch of places because ( as it sounds like you know from personal experience, really not joking at all  ) they were never brought over in the DET form like I would want.  And Again I have read a ton of posts on here more than I've ever posted and understand most of the limiting factors, and figured my power goals were under the ca's pop point, and have really only sunk a small amount from what I can figure than most others.  I personally made most anything I could with the help of a good friend of mine as his and my thinking were don't buy expensive stuff make what you can first and only buy what you need.  I don't have funds to do what my boss did to his 510 and buy a running z31 turbo and then stuff that motor trans combo in as well as put on the JWT 500HP kit, his car had crazy stupid power.  Again Redneck if I offended you I am sorry.

Yeah sorry looking back I guess I can see how you thought that. I have just always liked Sam's quote about the SAFC and wanted to give him credit haha. Anytime these threads come up where someone is putting a lot of mods on their ca18et's I can be a bit overly aggressive about not putting money into them based on my (and a seemingly lot of other peoples) bad experiences. And truthfully if your getting most of your mods for pretty cheap and/or free there is no harm in doing them aside from the time you invest (so long as the power levels don't get too high as bending a rod always sucks). Hell, even if someone spent full price for all this stuff it is their choice and I probably shouldn't have used such a harsh tone in my first post either way. Honestly Christmas is not my favorite time of the year so that is probably why I seemed to come off as a salty grinch in my first post lol. So yeah, no apology needed. If anyone should be apologizing I think it might be me for being a bit salty in my first post : \.

Thank you Redneck I too after my mom passed last year don't think Christmas is the best time.  Sucks that you had bad experiences with you ca, yeah it seams to me sometimes that I do have a pretty healthy ca as it was completely stock when i got it nearly 3 years ago with about 182k miles on it.  it was well taken care of.  And as a new comer to this site/community after i got my car i saw some of the nay saying get out of hand and really wanted this post to be about the mods and if i would do them again as i wont know until i get her back together and drive it, though my hope is that it could help others as well.  Thanks again and hope you have as best a time in this time that you can, from personal experience it about having the right people around me that helps me keep up beat.  Take care I will be updating this with any news of my car.

182k is still a lot of miles. Have you done a compression check before you started putting money time parts and boost into this engine? One advantage to you keeping the 18et is that you can still run in a normal class. I have a kade swapped notch so I have to run in smod. It is a tough class no matter how you look at it...but in a s12 its redix. The s12 only came with three different engines in the usa, and you got the 2nd best imho.

As far as the safc is concerned....every once in awhile some new member will come on and say he is building this awesome kadet engine build but he is going to cheap out and run an safc because he got it from a buddy on the cheap. As a collective forum we will tell this new member...no, your going to blow your engine up. They dont listen to us, and they blow up their awesome kadet engine that they just built. The ca18et is a bit different though as it was built originally as a turbo engine instead of an na engine. That being said...dont rely heavily on the safc for tuning...it doesnt give you a full picture. Dont go thinking you can boost the hell out of the engine just because you have it...you cant. Also, since your using the car for autox you should prolly look more at throttle response as opposed to power...you dont need a butt load of power to be fast on an autox course, you need a balanced car with good suspension and good throttle response to be quick.

I would like to correct you on this "few hundred more" statement I was/am going megasquirt when my finances come together and I was quoted 700 dollars for a set-up for my car I bought my safc 2 brand new for 150 so few hundred it is not lol and I still have yet to see anyone use nistune last i heard it was not useable with our ecu's but even so nistune is more expensive than megasquirt. as far as tuning goes I agree with you on getting an engine mangement system because our stone age technology isn't capable of alot but hey you use what you can afford right?

As soon as I get my shit together I have a brand new set of oem headstuds thanks to Justin that I will be sending off to arp to have them make a set of arp headstuds for me i was told they keep the dimensions for future use so other members will beable to order some as well but again this is a little ways out lol 420's don't sound too shabby either do you have any specific power goals or are you just trying to see what you get with the mods you have.....

Sam thanks for the info and yes I understand to not completely trust the safc. I use my wideband and look at my plugs to determine whats really going on and yeah i have tons of throttle response with the small turbo ( it is off my 90 300zx twin turbo so spool up is quick and i dont go above 14 psi ) like that it doesn't take me to 5grand to build boost, i have done compression checks along the way and all have been super, right in the meat of the specs.  I appreciate the info about the safc when i get one of my other cars running and reliable i would love to go standalone (megasquirt or other ) as then i would be able to really tune it for the autox with a huge fat torque curve with a descent top end without blowing up.  right now that is financially not feasible, unfortunately for me.  i truly dont think i will boost it much past 15 ever unless i have laid the plans for a monster build with something that can take more power.  i truly was happy with it before i bent a valve and needed to do a top end rebuild, i talked with my boss about being able to keep it at the shop, working on it and not have to store it outside as it is winter and if he said no then i probably wouldnt have done most of this as i wouldnt have had a place to work on it.  Thanks again for the info and please understand that i dont do this stuff lightly i have read and read tons of stuff and have been working and wrenching on cars bikes truck aircraft for some time, though admit whole heartedly that i am by NO MEANS all knowing.  knowledge works best when we use it properly.  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone.

Sideways I havent gone to the 420's yet as so far i havent run the stockers out.  so not sure what i will do.  i called up arp and gave them my specs for the bolts and it was something like 140 bucks for the studs, nuts, and washers and at the time i could not afford them. though maybe some time later, hough thanks to my friend at my nissan dealer i got a full set of new headbolts supercheap less than 40 for the whole set.  club membership and where i work really help out.  well again i would love to hear about you building a 400hp ca and wish you all the best, if i can get 200 or close to the wheels i think i would be happy, though wont truly know till i get it dyno'd hopefully in February, maybe even on my birthday.

Sam thanks I hadn't found an actual price for the euro cam.  The one I purchased has .428 lift and 260 degrees so not alot more in either and if i could have found one I probably bought that instead. lol I guess I didn't look hard enough.  And Sam with the class your in does it allow power adders or it has to be stock?

sam31183Dec 25, 2011, 7:56 pm · #17

smod you can basically do anything engine wise...its a class for cars with engine swaps. One of the cars i have raced against was a supercharged mustang. btw i am running on slicks also

posted image

I was running canuck lowering springs last year with kyb agx shocks...i am running coilovers with way stiffer springs now...400 in the front and 550s in the back. I think the car will be way more competitive this year. With the canucks and the slicks the car was rolling all over the place real bad, but it was faster...the coilover set up on slicks should be damned quick. Depending on who shows up also it should be fairly competitive. Only time will tell though. I am excited to see what this setup will do.

JeremyDec 25, 2011, 10:41 pm · #18

Sam nice to know about that class. my setup is sw20 agx's front and fox body agx's rear with 450 lb springs front and rear with a suspension techniques adjustable sway bar and stock front sway bar, s13 lca's. i am going to be getting a front sway bar just not sure which one yet, and possibly stiffer springs front and rear as i also have an obx style lsd that i still need to install after i get it back on the road, to make sure the engine is running right.

I don't know who quoted you 700 bucks for a generic megasquirt system but that is highway robbery. If that quote was installed I could understand the price a bit more but then again if that is the case you can't compare the 150 dollar SAFC 2 being uninstalled as that isn't exactly a fair comparison.

MS 1 $252.00: http://www.amazon.com/MegaSquirt-Programmable-Engine-Management-Assembled/dp/B005OS5BES/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_2

MS 2 $458.00: http://www.amazon.com/MegaSquirt-Programmable-Engine-Management-PCB3-57/dp/B005OS5CI8/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_3

MS 3 $548.00: http://www.amazon.com/MegaSquirt-Programmable-Engine-Management-Assembled/dp/B005OS5D50/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_3

Not too sure how big the advantages/disadvantages are between MS1 versus MS2 and 3 but either way even going with MS1 is going to offer a lot more tuneability then an SAFC for not much more money.
sideways_s12Dec 27, 2011, 10:09 am · #20

Megasquirt themselves were the ones that quoted me I talked to them directly and 700 was the quote. I was going with the ms3 as well and that was uninstalled I agree ms is defthe better way to go as far as tuning but 700 is pretty steep if your working with a budget....

I was just looking at you link what car is that for because as far as I know you have to give them specifics about your car/ set-up at least I had to you can't just grab any megasquirt set-up and just use it. I thought that was the point of megasquirt anyway....?

I dropped the CA18ET out of my 84 hatch some years back due to blown head gasket. I was already way along on rebuild when I found this site. I went ahead and built it up with a T25, fmic, Eurocam, SS Blasters, ARP studs and Cometic metal head gasket. I have used the forum to get a wealth of info and Keith has been a tremendous help. I am delighted with my CA18ET as it is doing what I need it to do for a DD. I do not race or drift, but I do get some respect from other car enthusiasts for my efforts. My car is more on the OEM restored side similar to Keith's effort. I have at least 300k miles on the original engine that DID NOT need to have any cylinders bored or crank ground to meet specs. I have been quite happy with this car ever since I bought it in 88. I know the ET has it's limitations so I don't push it past 12 psi. But it sure gets me into the interstate traffic MUCH better than it used to. Best of luck on your mods, I hope the other guys will cheer you on too.

For anybody wanting to know about my car, I got it running just a little bit ago.  I broke in the cam and found some small leaks that I am going to fix tomorrow.  Personally it sounds a bit meaner, though as of yet I haven't revved it past like 2500 during the break-in period, like your supposed to.  With the small amount of things I need to take care of I should have it on the road getting a feeling for the cam and the mods I have put together.  In a couple days I will write another post letting you know what I think and answer any questions anyone has.  I am relieved that it runs, since I have done so much that I wasn't sure if I had it all put back together right.

Thanks everyone for all the support and comments.

Ok I feel it's at a good point in this thread for me to weigh in on this, because I'm very old-school when it comes to turbocharging and tend to DIS-agree with the popular opinions in this thread. Before I got into the S12 I came from DSM's at a time when there was no EMS, and MS was considered a pro-level modification. Most of the guys with DSM's were running with SAFC-II's (including myself), and while some of them were running the AFC's as Apex'i intended, many had come up with new tricks and modifications with AFC's to make them work a bit differently and more advantageous for higher boosting. But the real point here is that even something that works as simple as an AFC can be tweaked for success. Before I came to DSM's, I came from oldschool 80's turbocharged Chryslers (2.2 and 2.5L SOHC turbocharged engines), and those guys had literally NO aftermarket. They employed the use of pressure valves, pieces of garden hose, JB-weld, tap screws, and old cold start injectors from ancient Saabs in junkyards... and many of those guys used that kind of hodge-podge approach to force upwards of 30psi out of factory T3's and run 12's and even 11's in the quarter mile, with full interiors in heavier cars than ours. And virtually NO datalogging, just using NARROW-band O2 meters, Hardware-store cobbled manual boost controllers, plug reading (VERY old school), and a lot of patience.

SO... my point is the same as it was when I first started posting on the old Classic 200SX email group, before I even came up with the idea for "Club-S12".... you can spend a lot of money, or you can be clever like the hill billies were, and patient, and surprise people.

I feel that I've adequately made my point, so let me kinda put that in perspective of an S12... specifically a CA18ET platform. Coincidentally, it's what I started with, and what I was obsessed with even before I finally found my first S12. It's also what I helped one other former member with, and he took his car into low 12's with very little. So here is what I think.

You can use an AFC on your car. Successfully. There's nothing "wrong" about it. Someone else on here did so many years back, using an SR20DET MAF, a T25G, big front mount IC, and bigger injectors (although I can't for the life of me remember what injectors, but that's trivial this post). He ran a 12.1something in the 1/4 mile before he blew a head gasket on the next run. While he had no dyno numbers, you can figure out he was pretty fast. Him and I figured that with ARP head studs and a cometic head gasket, he could hold the head on for even more power. He also was running an UN-ported head, so while it's true that SOHC CA heads have poor flowing ports, even poor flowing ports can be boosted. Also, port geometry becomes less of a concern in higher boost, and overall port size is more important... so the design of the port is compensated for if you were to port it open more.

Him and I were also figuring on switching to a T28, which should have been plenty...we had seen a guy in the UK slap a T3 with adapter plate onto the factory CA18ET turbo exhaust manifold, and with supporting mods run 300hp to the wheels. Of course he had a CA18DET bottom end, but again... we figured some ARP main studs and rod studs would cover the bases there, too. Shot-peening and cryo-treating the rods would also add some more strength, but it might be around the same price to provide a single rod to Eagle or Pauter and have them make you a custom set of forged rods which would be well beyond anything you'd need.

So while there are limitations to the CA18ET, there are ways to make it handle power. And there are ways to work with simple things like AFC's, and even to run cheap home-made extra fuel injection and pressure switches. And yes, you don't need a wide-band O2 meter, because the resolution of a narrow-band meter is plenty IF you have the conservative (and I think prudent) tuning ethic of running a little extra fuel for safety sake... one light bar's worth of fuel mixture on a narrow band is the perfect size fuel cushion IMO.

NOW... I currently have a KA24DE, and I think for the money and results, a KA24DE swapped in, followed a bit later by a bolt-on turbo setup... that would be more cost-effective than tuning up a CA18ET for good power levels. But I don't think the CA18ET tuned up is a bad idea, and I'm more than happy to offer ideas for you. I think that because I came from a couple other turbocar backgrounds (especially the old turbo Chryslers), I'm in a unique position to offer a very different perspective than other people. I've mentioned a few techniques in this post, so if you want more information, just ask and I will explain, and point you to links for other pages with details and diagrams/photos... Your present modifications are a great start, and just need some more brainstorming to make it work with an AFC or any other simple, no-fuss method.

The cam you used is a custom regrind correct? Do you know the specs?

JeremyJan 16, 2012, 1:43 am · #25

sideways, the cam i am using is a billet from a company called Webcams.  the specs are valve lift of .428/.428 and duration of 260/260. you can find it here: www.webcamshafts.com.  they have two profiles though at the time i went to order mine they only had the non turbo one, also i couldn't find a euro cam to speak of as they are less expensive and only .01 less lift. oh well. i am glad to say that so far the cam feels good, i have only put about 10 miles on it yet though at part and medium throttle it feels stronger and starts to come into boost seemingly sooner. i am going to be putting more miles on it before i go full all out. i still need to check my wideband and make sure it is running right before i just go hog wild.

Arro, i have talked a little with you before (shout box ) and have read alot of your posts and felt like you're always striving to give out good info and have used some of it as well.  i thank you for your input and want to say that i do believe my power goals are well inside the limits of the ca18et( at this time ), though later who knows i still am looking for a notch to put this motor into so i can strip this one for an autox only car.  just money right.

thanks again to all who have given honest feedback and support, it kept my spirits up while i had to wait to put it all together.
i will keep updating this thread with info and hopefully in february i will have a dyno sheet to quantify these mods.

Is everything else in the head stock?

JeremyJan 20, 2012, 12:18 am · #27

sideways, here is what i did: Upgrades I am doing this round as follows: 1) Cam from WEBCAMS grind #460 .428 lift with 260 duration intake/exhaust, 2) JWT z31 single valve springs part# AVG3E-L6SPR ( 8 of course ), 3) intake and exhaust are gasket matched, 4) e-fans from a Maxima or Altima from the jy with thermo switches to run, 5) one colder NGK plugs ( so 7's rather than 6's ), 6) second msd blaster SS coil.
the valve springs are good to 7 grand as told me by the guys at JWT and their engineer.

Also i have been driving it every day now and it feels quite a bit stronger, still doing some re-tuning on the safc so next month i should get it dynoed.

Awesome! Can't wait till I'm done with my black car so I can get back to my single slam and work towards that 400 HP

JeremyJan 20, 2012, 11:18 pm · #29

Sounds good sideways, I too want to hear about your car during and after your build.  Please keep us all up to speed.

What's the benefit of a single valve spring? Is it stiffer than the factory duals?

Also where did you get that part number from?  Nothing showed up locally.

JeremyFeb 8, 2012, 11:41 pm · #34

manny, depending on who you talk to there are several benefits. though, really talking to valve spring makers can shed more light on the benefits.  on the ones i got i talked to JWT ( Jim Wolf Technology )about them and for me it is an upgrade as i will both have a heavier seat pressure as well as allow me to rev it to 7k safely without valve float even with the added lift of the new cam.  my setup was slightly lighter as of course there was only one valve spring rather than the two stock ones.  i so far have kept it to the 6k limit so far as there is only about 500 miles on it yet.  plus i am going to get a MSD digital 6AL 2 and slowly bring up the rev limit for autox times.

here is a link:    http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/customer_part_detail.asp?PartID=4

Hope that helps

So i finally have dyno'd my car.  I am happy-ish with my numbers and think there is still a descent amount of power i can get, though I really need to have it tuned better and figure out some of the little quirks that I am having first.  And please ignore the AFR is I was the second car of the day and they found out after some of the runs that the wideband was bad so changed it out, so my numbers are incorrect.

Here is the sheet:

And here is one of the runs ( and yes I know my car is quiet haha ):

All that work and only 180 horsepower?

not bad! I really wish I would of gotten to dyno the car before the ecu took a shit on me I really want to know what the power I was making was

JeremyAug 29, 2012, 7:16 am · #38

Sideways, thanks.  I know there is more power to be had, though for a 200k+ daily driven/autoxer motor I think it does pretty good.  Congrats on getting the SR, so does that mean you might let some of your 18et and 18det parts go?  Haha p.m. me if you do.

Lol thank and probably not

i want to learn how to do the maf swap. im doing kinda same mods and it is going to be my daily while i can build my celica and other cars

JeremyNov 21, 2012, 12:53 pm · #41

boxer, hello. well the swap isnt that hard to accomplish though getting it tuned properly afterwards can be difficult.  there are wiring diagrams on here and on the net specifically from JWT(jim wolf technology) that show the wiring in of bigger mafs to cars like the z and others.  of course you need somme sort of device to modify the signal so the computer sees the correct amount of air being used. so there is all of the Apexi products for that the SAFC SAFC2 and Neo.  there are also other companies that have made maf converters namely HKS, and i believe Greddy, you could try and find those units and attempt to use those a well.  you will then just need to program in the unit what unit you are using and what unit was your stock one so it can do the correction factors to make it run right.

Didnt read the whole thread but good job on the build. Are u still using a z32 t25? I'm not sure of your reason for that but its a very small turbo with horrible flow and u can barely call it an upgrade from the stock T2. I built my ca20et for limited power just like u are and I'm using a T25 off a ca18det. they are a great upgrade for the ca18/ca20 and flow waaaaay better than the smaller units and is just small enough that we might be able to use all of its potential. its good for about 12-14 psi depending on how good your intercooler setup is and should net somewhere around 200hp at the wheels. probably more cuz your other mods are pretty good. with the z32 t25 you are already overboosting it at 14psi

JeremyDec 11, 2012, 10:41 pm · #43

Iggy, thanks for the props.  yes i am still using the z32 t22/25.  the reason i am using it is it was a turbo i had and my t2 was starting to go and it was fairly easy to swap.  i do of course want a larger turbo and hope that with this impromptu rebuild i have to do(#4 rod bearing took a dump) that i can also build a mani for the new turbo just not sure what turbo to go with yet.  the z32 t25 was awesome as i autox and it would spool instantly and be good for 14 lbs of boost just like you say.  i also just got the ca20 intake mani so plumbing to and from the Evo 8 intercooler stuffed in front of my radiator will be much shorter. i also have twin e fans and a water sprayer for the intercooler, which i am going to improve, right now its just the nozzle from an STI sprayer pumped from my rear hatch pump. if you have any suggestions on very quick spooling turbos that still have a descent top end so it doesnt feel like it tapers off at 5 k i would appreciate it.

Go with a evo3 big 16g thats what i was running and on wastegate of 8 psi it was pretty strong....
Post Merge

Also its good.for 22 psi if you want to take it that high and there wasnt much lag i was at fullboost by 4k....
JeremyDec 12, 2012, 5:40 pm · #45

sideways is that 22 psi at 4k or a lower amount at 4k. when it was put together i could get about 5 psi at about 1800-2000 rpm and full 14 psi at about 3k. i do understand that pressure is pressure and flow is flow and the 16g will flow more so needs less psi behind it just curious as i do like a crisp throttle which does have a bit to do with the path rather than solely the turbo.  and has anyone dynoed a ca18et with the 16g to get a number reference.  Thanks guys

sideways_s12Dec 12, 2012, 5:56 pm · #46

i was running the 16g at 8 psi and was at full boost pressure at 4000 rpm the t25g form the sr I had before that was about 3300 rpm at full boost at 15psi the 16g obviously flows more I never had a chance to runn 22psi because of the ecu issue I came across. also never had a chance to dyno as well. I did race Iggy in his s12 with a ca18det swap when he was at 202hp and he only got me by a fender mind his car was stripped out and he's alot lighter than me. I was full interior with me (280) and my tools in the trunk. so If I had to guess my power level it was probably about where you are now. throttle response wasn't that bad either...
