Hi all,
As you may have seen from my build thread, I am in the process of removing my ca20e auto from an 85 MkI hatch.
I am replacing it with a CA18DET and manual box from an s13.
I was hoping that you guys could help me out by posting links to threads, or just leaving a reply to help me get it finished.
For the conversion I have :
S13 CA18DET + 5 speed box
S12 Clutch/brake pedal box
S13 drive shaft
CA18DET ECU and loom ( I have 2 of each )
+ a few other bits and pieces
What I need to know is :
Can I use an S13 master cylinder ?
What do I need to get in regards to clutch cables etc ?
What is the situation with the gearbox mounts ?
+ any other info you can provide
I have looked through the forums and there is so much information and so many different opinions that its making life a little difficult. That is why i was hoping someone could post me links to what they have done, what someone else has done or just how to do it.
I would really appreciate your help

Help on conversion please
Juddez on 08:57:32 PM / 05-Jan-12What I need to know is :Yes, but you have to take the rod out of the S12 master. The S13 one isn't the right length (Just a single circlip)
Can I use an S13 master cylinder ?
What do I need to get in regards to clutch cables etc ?There are no clutch cables. The S13 throttle cable will work for the throttle.
What is the situation with the gearbox mounts ?You will have to fab one up. Easy peasy.
Thanks Jay.
As I cannot track down an S12 master cylinder, do I have another option for making an S13 one work ? Or is there another Master cylinder that will work ?
You can cut and reweld the S13 rod. Should be no big thing.
You really are a wealth of S12 knowledge aren't you ? :yay!:
Does anyone have any pictures / measurements / designs for the gearbox mounts ?
Some informative auto to manual threads: http://club-s12.org/v3/index.php?topic=18215.0, http://club-s12.org/v3/index.php?topic=27465.0, http://club-s12.org/v3/index.php?topic=30272.0
Will the factory CA20E fuel pump suffice for he CA18DET ?
should be ok for a stock det.
Will King springs (KDRL-25) from an IRS model fit my SRA model ? Rear springs by the way. I have KDFL-15's for the front which, according to the catalogue, will fit
Should.
I've used S13 rear drop springs in the SRA before.
I cannot confirm 100% they will. But I wouldn't think twice about it personally. FWIW
I have removed the CA20E engine loom (unclipping the 2 plugs that join it to the cars electrics) Now my question is :
How do I connect the wires on the CA18DET loom (from a 1992 S13 if it helps) to this clip under the dash ?
And where on the CA18DET loom do I join into for the clip circled in this picture ?
If somebody could possibly copy these pictures and edit them with text/diagram to show me what I need to do ?
Also, is it even this simple or do I have a lot more work to do ?
I would like to just be able to plug the engine loom in without having to touch the cars electrics if at all possible
Hey all. Just a bump to see if anybody can give me a hand with this.
I have been told the Australian/New Zealand models were wired differently to the US/European models.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Will a manual CA20E gearbox cross member work on an CA18DET ? or will I still have to fab one up ?
just take apart the transmission bell housing. Leave the s13 front bellhousing where it bolts to the flywheel and clutch with the input shaft and take the ca20e s12 rear bellhousing and mate the s13 front to s12 rear and it will work just fine. that's what i have and it's perfect. no custom mounts needed no custom driveshaft either
Juddez on 03:10:09 PM / 06-Jan-12Will the factory CA20E fuel pump suffice for he CA18DET ?
Yes!
I dont have the manual CA20 box though. Can just get a manual cross member. My CA20 that I pulled out was auto so along with changing the engine I am also changing from auto to manual
Whats up with these engine mounts ? I was lead to believe that the CA20 mounts, once bolted onto the DET would line up. Not the case though or so it seems. What have I done wrong ?
Also, with the CA20 mount the oil filter (standard small size) wont fit in. As circled.

Engine is already sitting too far back to just move it back so hole lines up
the ca20e mounts bolt right up. these are not ca20e mounts. ca20e mounts have 6 bolt holes in a circle this looks almost like a ka mount
I knew that - why couldn't I see it?
Thats what I seem to have found out via the facebook page. What I cant understand is why my S12 even has these mounts in it. Also the fact that (before I pulled it out) it had a CA20E in it with these mounts and brackets. Now I have to track down some mounts and brackets from Australia. Fuck it !
I have a set of the 4 brackets from an 86 ca20, will check ship options if you're interested. Don't have the mounts.
Thanks for the offer but I found some in Ozzy off s12silvia.com (dont hate me for it, more OZ members so works better for me in that respect).
Hey! Just trying to resurrect this thread because I am stuck! Putting an ca18det in my s12 mk 1 which had a ca18s in it originally. Had the exact same problem as your last picture, I managed to pick up an s13 crossmember for cheap, and though where it bolts up to the steering rack seems to fit, the bolt holes to the chassis rails are completely out, s13 xmember being much further spaced and not flat, can upload pictures if I need to but i'm sure someone out there will know what I'm talking about?! Help much appreciated!
Turns out the reason it wouldnt fit was that the NZ built S12's have to CA20E with an FJ20/bluebird x-member. I had to track down a x-member from an import (jap) s12. Bolted straight in after that. See my build thread for pictures
Yeah true, thought as much. Would the s13 one work (aside from the holes having to be redrilled and maybe a flat plate put over it to cover the old holes? I'm going to have to play around with it for a while and try make it fit, just gotta figure out how, or how on earth to get my hands on the other crossmember
I'm not sure. Maybe have a look around the forums here and see what other x-member options there are. Alternatively, join our NZ facebook page and ask Chris (aka spiderwebFX) what he has done. http://www.facebook.com/groups/209130079124989/

This is tough for NZ/AU S12 owners, but CA18DET swaps are mechanically straightforward. All you need is the engine, CA18DET bellhousing, an S13 transmission, and the front half of its driveshaft. It should mount to the stock mounts and everything else should bolt up. The S13 tranny needs the shifter hole cut further back. The real trouble lies in procuring clutch cylinders and lines, and a manual crossmember. Find those and it should all bolt up, once more.
Beyond that, it's the hassle of wiring the swap. That's what killed mine. (The PO had no idea what he was doing, and I couldn't figure the diagram to rewire it myself)
Straight forward for everyone else. I'm not sure if the Aussies have the same problem with the x-members. Once I had the import x-member in the swap went rather easy. Bolted straight in (check my build thread).
Clutch cylinders were EASY as for me. Got a mate that works in the parts department of my local Nissan dealership and he had brand new ones delivered to me the next day.
Have a mate who drives in the Nation Drifting championship (the D1NZ) and the guys who wires his cars is going to do the s12 for me when I'm ready
