1986, 70k miles/ car just started running funny 2wks ago.  Started stumbling at idle but always regains. Then noticed when driving car it would not go over 4k rpms. I was recommended by nissan dealer to go thru the electrical and replace power diodes and ck coils since they were from '86. I replaced power diodes and ignition coil cuz it was weak. Replaced fuel filter, Ckd vacuum lines, and cleaned cap and rotor which r a yr old. Car now runs past 4k rpm under no load when pedal depressed slowly. Same as for when car is under load. Bottom line,  car can idle, running choppy sometimes, always returning to proper idle.  When accelerator pressed to floor quickly, engine clips out(FEELS LIKE REV LIMITER) as if it has no signal and stops running if pedal is not released. If pedal IS released and reapplied slowly engine will catch and start running. Ran self diagnostic,  got code 44, everything running within parameters so says the manual. I'm frustrated,  can anyone help me?

Did you replace both coils

No, just ignition...car ran on just exhaust coil with no ignition coil plugged in... Think its strong enough, but not sure...

Doesn't need a working exhaust one to run; so good the ignition side changed. Try a new rotor. You said you cleaned yours, they have been known to short thru the distributer shaft. Inexpensive thing to try and may fix it.

Thank you ! The rotor was the problem, it was burned through . I took it off and examined it  looked fine. Ordered a new one on yr advice. When I got the new one and took the old one off it was then evident , burned through . I had run the car while waiting for the new one....  When the disturbuter shorts , does it  damage anything else ?

Didn't in mine. Has happened twice to me. The 1st time, a "professional garage" kept the car for 5 days trying to figure out why it kept cutting out at higher rpms; did a "full" tuneup - finally found the bad rotor after 5 days - when asked why it was'nt changed with the "full tune", just got a blank look on their face. Talked their $700 joke of a bill down to $300 - refused to pay them for things they did unrelated to the rotor they should have changed the 1st day.  Sol the second time the car acted up, got smart enough to do my own rotor lol.
Seems every time I get lazy and take this car to a mechanic I get screwed by their ignorance - even the "Z specialist" in our area.

Mine is doing the same thing. Ordering one tomorrow. Higher rpm more resistance spark takes path of least resistance. Ty

So it was the rotor but also change all the plugs, wires, coils did the trick no more "rev limiter" . Also no2 ext. Was going to no 2 intake that could have been it to.
