130 Amp Alternator Upgrade-Infiniti QX56 Alternator

After some electrical upgrades to the S12 my alternator started to die. So I decided to try and see if the Infiniti QX56 Alternator (130 Amps) would work (because of the 130 Amp capacity). After some mods to the top mounting ears (enlarging the bolt holes size) I was able to install the alternator. The hardest part of this upgrade is getting the stock belt adjuster fabricated (which I'm not completely finished yet). I need to visit either a junk yard for another adjuster bar or some welding shop to make a custom bracket. The one I fabricated is currently working but I'm not real happy with it. You'll see.  I'll post some pictures here once I get them organized.  If any one knows of a custom alternator bracket available that I could use please let me know. I currently running the car as a way to see if the eye bolt (5/16) used will hold the alternator  in position until I get a new one. The end result here is I have the current available from the upgraded alternator when I need it.

very nice man i like this a hell of alot im going to copy u just to let u know

calvins200sxOct 10, 2012, 2:37 pm · #3

OK, No problem to copy it at all. I let you know when when I get the correct adjustment arm done. Maybe I'll even get some made and sell them for the upgrade. Just don't forget to upgrade the wiring back to the battery so you don't melt the excesiting wiring with all that extra current. I ran 6 AWG all the way back to the battery and just cut out the old burnt wiring.

Damn, why is the world would you ever need 130 amps in an S12??? Unless it's a rally S12 with 18 million 100w lights on it ;)

The 90 amp maxima alternator is a bolt on (needs pulley swapped) and is more than enough power for most any one I would think.

Thanks for the write up though, the more information the better!!

If the pulleys swap, I would recommend doing so as well.  running a pulley like that can be hard on the bearings.

if you ever had a true stereo (not somthing u can buy from wallyword or bestbuy) running many batteries stock 70 amp or maxima 90amp isnt enough...i can get over that amperage draw from 2 twelves....i really like to see at night when my stereos on full or close to it( cant stand flickering headlights

calvins200sxOct 10, 2012, 8:29 pm · #6

I drive at night a lot, run an electrical fan , MSD Ignitions system, stereo system, fuel pump and injectors, headlights. It's not that I need all the 130 Amps, it just nice to have the amperage if I  do need it. Plus the cost of the 130 Amps alternator versus the 90 Amp is basically the same. Mounting it was a fun project and great improvement. Now when the Aliens try to suck the power out of the little old S12 it won't stall out. I might even be able to out run the space ships. LOL. Just remember current is voltage divided by resistance.

True stereo? You mean decibel competition stuff? Sure. I have 1000 watts in all in my car. Never notice lights dimming when my mirrors are shaking so hard I see four of everything with my 90amp. It's all name brand stuff, nothing "dual" about my setup.

running two battieries and running a dual voltage iceolator ...the way to go
calvins200sxOct 10, 2012, 11:06 pm · #9

On the serious side I just want to have the current available for the future. I plan on running some other electrical circuits soon . Like a electric water pump or air conditioner pump, power steering pump, etc.  As far as the pulley it will stay on the alternator (if need be I could find a 3 grove pulley and replace it) because the shaft is larger. So far it is been tracking right in the groves and not wondering around. It should ride on the groves that it is currently on.  Anyhow all these electrical components add up. Also the more stable the voltage the better the car will run and perform.

If the shaft is larger on the 130 amp alternator then why not have the stock one bored out to fit. I like everything about the swap except the pulley with extra ribs.

StephenGOct 11, 2012, 1:01 pm · #11

Yeah, 130 is totally overkill lol. You'd need a few grand worth of stereo to warrant that.

Electric accessories will certainly require more amperage, so good on you for doing a supporting mod!  I know some MR2's with electric power steering and whatnot have a decently sized alternator.

This is pretty neat!

Just got two Alternator brackets from Jeggs. These look like one of them will fit and take care of the adjuster problem associated with this mod. I'll see if I can get these mounted this weekend, I'll post some pictures when I'm done.  :yay!:

I am a CB radio/HAM operator. I have an RF amplifier that can EASILY draw 100 amps on it's own. I killed my original alternator when I had my 88 SE and had it rewound for 120A. That really wasn't enough, but it was a lot better than what I started out with. I now have an upgraded 145A alt in my 04 S10 and my lights still flicker when I'm talking, but not as bad.

stepping up voltage thru a transformer is a crazy thing .....^ funny shit tho

those kinda radios have transformers in them that draw alot of current...atleast the older ones did....

kinda like a modern amp does ......

Transformers convert A/C to D/C and are used on base radios so you can plug them into a standard wall socket without a separate power supply.
There are various voltage regulators within a radio depending on the transceiver, though most only have one. The RF amplifier has no regulator as it's designed to run as a 12v nominal device straight out of the box.

calvins200sxNov 9, 2012, 8:32 pm · #20

Transformers don't convert AC to DC. AC in AC out. You need a bridge rectifieror at least a diode to convert Ac to DC

vg30e_x2_200sxNov 9, 2012, 10:00 pm · #21

And a simple one can be made with 4 diodes.

If this helps any, a 97 maxima alternator bolted onto my 88 vg without mods.
