I have a 84 ca18et and my car was running good till my car started to spudder and so I gave it more gas. Then I heard a pop noise and my rpm gauge  went out and now misfiring real. Installed new plugs, plug wires and cap & button are good. I'm starting to think its my distributor.. its a lot of money and I'm tryn to avoid spending money

test resistance on the distributor. rmp gauge runs on distributor firing.

actually test your coils the signal to the tach runs off the negative trigger that goes to the coil so say if there is a bad or crappy wire to the coil it could be causing your sputtering.
