hey i research this a long time ago, but i was just wondering if the 300zx z31 tranny will fit the 200sx v6. bolt on and no mod, or need mod?

any info is great.

The tail shaft is different and would require some modification to make it work.

The internals are identical though. A tranny shop could take apart the 300ZX transmission for your and insert the good working internals from it into your stock transmission.

Not sure about that. There were several different tranny's in the Z31. Some made by Nissan, some by Borg Warner. The casing on the 87 300ZX tranny I had in my previous S12 had a much wider case than my stock one, and was a Nissan tranny. I actually had to widen my tranny tunnel a bit to make it fit.

Yes, all the Z31 tranny's will bolt to your S12, but they will all require some kind of modification. Custom tranny mount, and driveline were what I required when I swapped. Also, the shifter sat about an inch further back in the car, so I had to cut a bit. However, I really liked the shifter being back a bit further. It was more comfortable, and closer to the steering wheel.

i was just at the local junk yard today...took a look at the only z31 they have...Torn to hell..the stock turbo is in back, right next to the tranny..hmm...anyhow, i should've taken pics, cause the trannys in question (z31 & s12) looked VERY similar, tailshaft looked real close....bellhousing, EVERYTHING!

Take a tape measure with you when you go back for comparison purposes. Measure the length of the tailshaft. That is going to be the difference in the two transmissions.

I posted this a while back, and told the webmaster to keep the article for the site, but I guess he decided he didn't want it. But the info is valuable to know before you get into it.
Anyway, here's the deal. The gear ratios are NOT identical, except for reverse. Second gear is slightly more aggressive. Barely noticeable, but it is there.

Here's the article, and webmaster, the offer still stands if you want to keep the info and pictures here at the site.
